Chapter 1273: Bex
Oberon shook his thoughts away a second time.
“Even I doubted myself at some point,” Oberon said, voice tight. “Who would’ve thought this would happen.”
“Apparently, you,” Jenera replied, her voice just as tense. “Without you, we’d be having a very different conversation right now.”
Oberon exhaled deeply, calming the rising chill in his chest. “So… how do we deal with this?”
They were currently in the heart of a vast desert, not a single green in sight for miles. The sun beat down, hot and merciless, but none of the Eldorians gathered seemed to feel its scorching rays.
Many of them wore varying expressions, but one emotion took precedence: dread.
Oberon glanced at the people standing beside him and felt a bit of reassurance. Aside from the Eldorians that Atticus had taken with him, the rest were currently gathered.
Avalon stood at the forefront, the temperature around him searing, his eyes blazing.
The others were no less tense.
Despite the blazing sun, all eyes were fixed on the five figures standing at a distance.
Four of them looked like they had come for war, clad in tight fitting black military uniforms, expressions hard, aura cold and overwhelming. They stood still, like soldiers awaiting a command.
In front of them stood a man who looked like he belonged in a royal procession rather than a battlefield.
He wore an elaborate robe of black and gold, with the image of a fierce beast emblazoned across it. He stood straight, chin up, hands clasped behind his back.
He gazed at the Eldorians with the bearing of a ruler, regal, composed, commanding.
“Warriors,” the man’s voice rang out, authoritative, calm, and filled with power.
“I am Nex, the god of the great world of Vortharion.”
Despite the calm tone, the tension in the air only worsened. Many of the Eldorians tensed.
A god.
They had seen what Atticus could do. The impossible things he was capable of. And now, this being was considered to be on the same level as that monstrous boy.
Could they win?
Of everyone, only Avalon’s expression remained unchanged. He stood tall, unflinching, eyes locked on Nex.
Then Nex spoke again, voice steady:
“If you haven’t already figured it out, this is the next scenario in the Virelenna. My goal is to reach the core of your world. Your god has also been given the same goal to achieve in mine. He will fail.”
His cold eyes swept over each Eldorian.
“Now, while it is unfortunate for your god and champions, I will become the god of this world. And I will need more soldiers, warriors who will fight for me. The wise choice would be to lay down your arms and lead me to your core. It will save needless pain and suffering. You have five seconds.”
As if to drive the point home, the soldiers behind him unleashed their auras, massive and suffocating, blanketing the space around them like a wave.
“What do you think? Sounds tempting?” Oberon asked dryly.
Jenera snorted. “Bunch of bullocks.” She cursed. “We have to hold him here. I don’t want to be the one to explain that we let an enemy god stroll past us when he returns.”
“The god just claimed he’ll fail. You still believe he’ll return?”
Jenera turned toward Oberon. “Do you have even the slightest doubt he will fail?”
A wide smile spread across Oberon’s face.
“No.”
He couldn’t see it, Atticus failing. If that boy ever fell, he would probably drag the entire lower planes down with him.
His end would be nothing less than grand.
Jenera smiled back and turned away. A battle was coming. Avalon stood at the lead, and he hadn’t bothered to respond to the god’s demand.
“So… where are they?” Jenera asked grimly. This wasn’t going to be easy.
“Best case? They’re on their way.”
“Worst case?” she asked.
“Still laying on their beds,” Oberon sighed.
Moments ago, when the blue star receded and the golden sun returned, Oberon had immediately raised the alarm.
They had been waiting for the next scenario to begin, and Oberon had convinced the others to leave the hall and double check the state of the planet.
It was the right call. Minutes later, they detected five powerful presences screaming toward the city. If not for his caution, they wouldn’t have intercepted them this far out.
He had sent word to Whisker, who had vanished from the hall to “chill”, and the furry Noctis, who had been with Anastasia. But neither had arrived yet.
And honestly, Oberon didn’t believe they could face a god without those two.
The five seconds passed in the blink of an eye, and a frown formed on the god’s face.
“Your bravery is admirable… but no less stupid,” Nex said, his disdain clear. “There will be no mercy.”
The tension was about to snap when a chuckle suddenly rang through the air.
Many of the Eldorians felt their chests lighten instantly. That laughter… they could never mistake it.
They turned toward the skies, eyes widening, as a figure with blue hair and crimson eyes descended slowly to the ground.
“Damn,” Whisker said casually, smirking. “I’ve never seen such a narcissistic being in all my centuries of living. Well, maybe one.”
He shrugged. “But you really take the cake… hmm, what’s your name again?”
Nex narrowed his eyes. “Nex. I am the god of—”
“Relax, man.” Whisker waved dismissively. “I didn’t ask you for your full on villain monologue, sheesh.”
The Eldorians immediately felt a heavy killing intent blanket the scene. Nex’s expression had darkened, an intense frown marring his features. He was clearly furious.
The Eldorians sighed.
Maybe… just maybe… Whisker wasn’t the right person to send out first.
He was going to piss the god off even more!
“Bex, right?” Whisker asked innocently. “Sounds a little feminine to be honest.”
The Eldorians cringed in unison.
This wasn’t even the first time Whisker had done this, saying the wrong name even after hearing the right one. But this? This had to be intentional.
How could anyone possibly mistake Nex? It was one syllable!
Whisker, of course, didn’t care. His gaze was already drifting to the men behind Nex.
“I mean, we get it, you’re a god and all. But did you really have to make your soldiers wear clothes with your face on them?” he said, pointing at the soldiers behind Nex. “That’s wild! Look at that, seriously ridiculous! Haa!”
He burst into laughter, unable to contain himself.
Sure enough, the Warbringers behind Nex looked like they had seen red. The insult was outrageous. Mocking their god in such a way? Unforgivable.
But before anyone could move, another presence suddenly fell upon the scene. It was quiet but vast, dense but restrained.
All eyes turned skyward again.
And there, descending gently, was a small, furry creature, no bigger than a puppy, drifting slowly toward the ground.
Noctis.
