Chapter 46: Refinement
Lin Jing scanned the available options: a cloth pouch, a stone ring, a jade bracelet, a treasure orb, a gourd, and a scroll. They all seemed relatively normal—except for the peculiar addition of a meditation staff.
Isn’t this a Buddhist artifact?
What is it doing in the Beast Taming Sect?
“You’re wondering why the sect crafted a spatial treasure into a meditation staff?” Elder Mo asked, noting Lin Jing’s expression.
“Yes,” Lin Jing nodded.
“It’s tied to an old story, one that isn’t recorded officially but passed down through oral tradition.” Elder Mo chuckled, picking up the meditation staff and holding it in his hand.
“During the time of the second sect master, a fearsome demon beast wreaked havoc in the Great Wasteland Domain. This beast was a rare kind, possessing extraordinary abilities that made it nearly impossible to kill—even by those a level or two higher in cultivation.”
“No cultivator in the Great Wasteland could handle it.”
“Eventually, a guest elder from the Demon-Slaying Bureau arrived to help. This elder was a Buddhist monk with exceptional skills in the Dharma. With the help of four Great Wasteland cultivators, including our second sect master, he used special methods to seal the demon beast away.”“Sealed, not slain.”
“To this day, the demon remains imprisoned underground in the Great Wasteland, restrained by four Buddhist pagodas connected to dragon veins. Each pagoda is now under the care of one of the four top sects in the region.”
“After the battle, the second sect master became friends with the monk. For a time, many of the Beast Taming Sect’s spatial treasures were crafted as Buddhist artifacts. This meditation staff has been here for quite some time.”
“But over the years, its unusual design has made it unpopular—few inheritance disciples choose it, even if they know the story behind it.”
“So that’s how it is,” Lin Jing mused. “I never thought our Beast Taming Sect would share the responsibility of guarding a demon-suppressing pagoda.”
After all, the sect was more like a monster sect than a traditional one.
“You’re not planning to pick the meditation staff, are you?” Elder Mo asked.
“No,” Lin Jing replied decisively. “It doesn’t match my elegant and free-spirited demeanor.”
Elder Mo was momentarily speechless. He hadn’t expected Lin Jing to be so self-absorbed, but upon closer inspection, he admitted the young man did bear a resemblance to his own youthful handsomeness. Perhaps that explained the confidence.
“Elder, I choose this one,” Lin Jing said, pointing to the red gourd.
The Pine Leaf Mouse was startled. It clearly preferred the cloth pouch, which seemed more convenient to carry. Lin Jing ignored it.
The space treasure was meant to house the Pine Leaf Mouse, so its portability wasn’t Lin Jing’s concern. Besides, all treasures of this level could change size, making them easy to carry in any form.
“Other spatial treasures have distinct signs of post-crafting refinement. This one, however, seems more like an innate creation. If I’m not mistaken, it’s the Suspended Gourd, a rare plant that naturally contains space within,” Lin Jing observed.
“Not bad—you’ve done your homework,” Elder Mo said approvingly. “The other six treasures are crafted from various spatial materials, but this gourd underwent minimal modification, making it the most primitive of the lot.”
“But that’s not the only reason you chose it, is it?”
“Correct. It’s a plant, and the Pine Leaf Mouse has a wood attribute. They should have good synergy,” Lin Jing explained. “Elder, if I manage to acquire more Suspended Gourds in the future, do you think the Pine Leaf Mouse could use its Glazed Immortal Eyes to fuse them?”
Compared to the other six treasures, the gourd’s plant-based properties were the key factor for Lin Jing.
“That’s certainly possible,” Elder Mo confirmed. “However, Suspended Gourds are incredibly rare. This one was a fortunate find by an ancestor. Even if you encounter more, affording them before achieving significant cultivation progress will be nearly impossible.”
“At least it’s something to aim for,” Lin Jing said with a smile. “Elder, I’ll go with the gourd.”
“That meditation staff is intriguing, though. Once I reach the Foundation Establishment stage and contract a second beast, could I apply for another spatial treasure? It wouldn’t do to have multiple beasts sharing one space, right?”
“Get lost!” Elder Mo finally lost his temper. These treasures represented the sect’s heritage, not some common stockpile! “I don’t have the authority to grant you another one. If you want that privilege, aim to become the young sect master. Then you can pick whatever you like—even let each beast have two treasures!”
After choosing the Suspended Gourd as his natal beast space treasure, Lin Jing followed Elder Mo’s instructions to refine it by imbuing it with a drop of his vital blood.
Once refined, Lin Jing found the treasure lived up to its status as a tool for Golden Core cultivators. The internal space was far larger than his former courtyard at the sect’s outer peaks.
Finally, the Pine Leaf Mouse wouldn’t have to struggle with storage limitations. Previously, its two storage pouches could only hold rare synthesis items, while sacks of ordinary spiritual rice and beans had to pile up in the courtyard. Now, those space issues were resolved.
Although the Suspended Gourd was Lin Jing’s natal treasure, it served as the Pine Leaf Mouse’s residence. This arrangement didn’t hinder the mouse from embracing its hoarding tendencies.
“Squeak!” The Pine Leaf Mouse, seeing Lin Jing fiddling with the gourd, eagerly reached out to touch it.
“Answer me if you dare,” Lin Jing teased, aiming the gourd at the bewildered mouse. Before it could react, the mouse was sucked into the space treasure with a swift whoosh.
Though confused at first, the Pine Leaf Mouse quickly began exploring the new space. Taking a deep breath, its eyes sparkled with excitement.
So spacious!
Looking around, it found the gourd’s interior vast and expansive. The boundaries were shrouded in green spiritual mist, perfect for cultivation. Standing amidst the mist, the Pine Leaf Mouse decided it was time to renovate the place into its new den.
“Squeak…” It began counting on its fingers, planning areas for sleeping, storing food, training, more storage, eating, and… even more storage.
“How does it feel?” Elder Mo asked Lin Jing with a smile. “Now that you have a natal beast space treasure, doesn’t it seem like you’re truly a beast-taming cultivator?”
“It certainly does,” Lin Jing replied, rotating the gourd in his hands. It shrank slightly and hung from his waist. The red gourd complemented his white robes, adding to his refined and handsome appearance.
“It suits you,” Elder Mo noted. “When you’re traveling, if a demonic cultivator mistakes you for an ordinary lone wanderer and tries to rob you, imagine their shock when you summon your beast companions. Truly satisfying.”
Elder Mo’s nostalgic grin revealed his past experiences. After all, one of the greatest joys of being a Beast Taming Sect disciple was the ability to gang up on enemies.
