Chapter 785: Chapter 33 Homeward Journey (6K)_4

Yegorov: “If you want to restrict me, I can’t help it. Division Commander, I will advance as much as you tell me to, not a step more!”

Wang Zhong: “These are your words! Just when I came in, you were still clamoring for a faster advance!”

“That was just now.”

“Report!” A guard at the door shouted loudly, “Doctor Kaja is here.”

Yegorov looked towards the gate.

Wang Zhong also turned his head and saw Doctor Kaja enter Headquarters wearing a white coat.

“Who’s sick?” she asked.

Wang Zhong: “No one’s sick, Doctor Kaja, I asked for you to come. Yegorov, may I borrow your conference room for a moment?”

Yegorov: “Can’t you say it here?”

Wang Zhong: “No.”

At this point, the Military Bishop of the Army Group suggested: “You can go to the chapel next door, there should be no warriors confessing right now.”

Wang Zhong: “Very good. Let’s go.”

————

The chapel was very simply furnished, with a large table, several chairs, and a wooden icon, in front of which were 12 lit candles flickering gently.

After entering, Wang Zhong suddenly remembered that he is a Saint and felt he should show some reverence, so he performed a simple ceremony in front of the icon, as Ludmila had taught him.

“Amen!” He shouted loudly and turned to the two, “Come, have a seat.”

Yegorov and Doctor Kaja exchanged a glance and sat down next to each other in unspoken agreement.

Wang Zhong took a stack of documents from Vasily’s hands and laid them on the table.

Yegorov’s eyebrows twitched.

Doctor Kaja covered her mouth.

Wang Zhong: “Actually, we have been looking for your families, employing some private connections.”

Yegorov: “No need, in fact, we—”

Wang Zhong placed a ring on the table.

Yegorov immediately closed his mouth, staring fixatedly at the ring.

Wang Zhong: “I’ll give you ten minutes to process this.”

As he was about to turn around, Yegorov called out to him: “Wait! Division Commander! It might be a bit easier with you here.”

Wang Zhong: “Really?”

“Yes, thinking about how you also lost your father and close friend, it makes me feel a lot better.”

Wang Zhong: “Did anyone ever tell you that you’re not very good at talking?”

“That’s something I hear often, I’m just a rough guy, everybody knows.”

Saying this, Yegorov stood up and reached for the ring, then hesitated halfway and drew his hand back, rubbing it vigorously before reaching out again.

Then he realized he couldn’t reach it.

Wang Zhong, with his index finger resting on the ring, lightly pushed it towards Yegorov.

The ring slid to the other side of the table, conveniently within Yegorov’s reach.

Yegorov picked up the ring and checked the engraving inside.

The ring on his hand reflected the light of the chapel’s candles.

After a long while, Yegorov asked, “Where did you find it?”

“In a village called Kuryanka, you can go there to pay your respects to them,” Wang Zhong said softly.

Yegorov asked again, “Are all of them there?”

“Yes, all there.”

Yegorov held the ring with both hands, held it in front of his nose, as if in prayer.

Doctor Kaja stood up, put her arms around his shoulders, like a mother comforting a grieving boy.

Wang Zhong: “Doctor Kaja, the details about your husband and family are also in these files.”

“And it also tells me where to pay respects to them, right?” Doctor Kaja asked calmly.

Wang Zhong nodded lightly.

“Thank you, Comrade Marshal,” the doctor said softly.

Wang Zhong: “I came… to say—”

To say it’s time to move on to a new life.

But these words Wang Zhong couldn’t bring himself to say.

After all, he wasn’t an experienced cleric, and he was still young, not sure whether this was the right thing to say at such a time.

He could only watch the two holding each other.
