Chapter 1297: Supporters
Approaching the topic scientifically was impossible for Khan. He didn’t know enough about those fields even to begin establishing a reliable perspective.
However, Khan knew the mana more than most. In some ways, he even surpassed Liiza and Zalpa since he had seen a wider assortment of possible applications. He was a student of multiple worlds, occasionally giving him an edge over actual Shamans.
The Great Old One and the Nak immediately came to mind when Khan heard Zalpa’s guess. The former would be easier to explain, but its implications would be more problematic. Instead, the latter would make the topic too mystical even for Khan.
The ancient, gargantuan creature could fill the universe with waves of energy even scanners couldn’t spot. Moreover, that mana continuously updated the Great Old One about its findings, acting as countless probes that gathered an unfathomable amount of information.
Khan believed nothing could escape his senses at his current stage, but the universe was vast, featuring all kinds of peculiar beings and alternative energy sources. He also would never claim to know everything about the mana.
Wayne’s element could be too mysterious and subtle for Khan’s senses to perceive, thriving in almost non-existent energy signatures. It definitely was a possibility, which would mean that Khan had no way of defending his family against it.
Instead, the similarities with the Nak would make Wayne’s element too vague to study. If he embodied a specific task the mana had planned for him, Khan would have no way of learning about it, let alone understanding its potential.
That conclusion would also imply that the mana had a constant sense of awareness shared across its many forms and locations, which was too grand an idea for a human mind to conceive.
“[I knew he was special from our first encounter],” Deni softly chuckled. “[Whatever the reason, he has my gratitude for rescuing me and bringing me here].”
“[I’ve become a savior]!” Wayne laughed. “[It won’t be long before I surpass you, brother]!”
“[Can you explain this brother stuff now]?” Liiza whispered, peeking up.
“[Noble families have strange practices],” Khan summarized. “[He is a bastard like me, but his family sold him to criminal organizations instead of acknowledging him].”
Liiza couldn’t help but feel more sympathy for Wayne’s situation but didn’t comment on it. After all, the Niqols weren’t strangers to those practices. Even her tribe had tried to give her away to secure benefits.
“[We can perform tests if your humans can deliver the necessary resources to the next stop],” Zalpa suggested.
“[If you give me the list],” Khan began to say but interrupted himself when he saw Wayne’s smile disappearing. That probably was the strangest development about the event yet, but Wayne had a good reason for it.
“[Khan, you told me to focus on myself],” Wayne reminded. “[I did, and I found out I don’t really like tests].”
Khan would have never expected Wayne to reject anything in his life, especially when coming from him. However, that discovery wasn’t only reasonable. It was also extremely good for Wayne’s development, almost confirming how much he had recovered from his psychological conditioning.
Having a crewmate who could affect the universe in mysterious and unpredictable ways wasn’t ideal. Still, Khan didn’t have the heart to force Wayne to go against his hard-earned personal development.
“[Alright],” Khan agreed. “[No needle will ever touch you again].”
Wayne immediately smiled again, laughing loudly. Deni also chuckled, happy for his human friend, but Khan ignored the reaction altogether.
Agreeing to avoid further investigation into Wayne’s element wouldn’t save Khan from the perils it could bring. Khan could accept not knowing, but the danger was real, and he wasn’t sure how to handle it.
The same went with Deni. Khan had more questions for Liiza’s father, and that first meeting couldn’t end like that. Liiza would have to have a proper private talk with him, and Khan believed he had to do that, too.
That was the proper thing to do when dealing with family, even with the acquired sides. Yet, the mission didn’t just disappear. The two ships were still heading toward the Nak’s home world, and Liiza was still pregnant.
Simulations happened in Khan’s mind, and most of them worried him to no end. As painful and no less concerning as it was, he and Liiza had agreed to leave their child with Zalpa while they completed the Nak’s mission.
Adding Deni to that caretaking task wouldn’t make much of a difference. If anything, it would bring an improvement to the initial plan. After all, Deni was family and the baby’s rightful Grandfather. It was almost his duty to be there when Liiza and Khan couldn’t.
Wayne was also one of the best protectors Khan could think of. He was strong and bordering on immortality. Wayne would defend Khan and Liiza’s child like few could, and a handful of instructions would tell Zalpa how to keep him in check.
Nevertheless, the many problems that could arise forced Khan to consider alternatives.
The best-case scenario and most ideal simulation saw Liiza remaining behind with the child, removing all of Khan’s worries in a single move.
However, the body between Khan’s legs grew colder as soon as he started considering the matter. Liiza didn’t even need to look at Khan to understand where his mind had gone, and that reaction was enough to make him dismiss the idea.
The other simulations were all concerning, but there was one that could work. It would actually solve many of the problems the married couple was currently facing, but Khan was unsure about its feasibility.
“[Deni, you said we have supporters among the Niqols],” Khan mentioned.
“[Many],” Deni confirmed, “[And from what I heard while flying in the other ship, their numbers are growing. Your harmless interceptions have earned you goodwill].”
Khan was glad to hear that, but his previous statement had a different target in mind.
“[How high does this support goes]?” Khan wondered, leaning forward to pat Liiza’s belly gently. “[We have family among the Elders, don’t we? Do you think Liiza’s Great-grandmother is among these supporters]?”
