Chapter 101: Beast Tide (4)
“FOR BASTION!”
“FOR HUMANITY!”
Dion heard the war cry washing over the city walls, feeling a strength rise up from his feet. Seemingly against his will, he screamed out the words, which dragged out the negative thoughts that had taken root in his mind.
In its place a righteous indignation began to blossom, filling his mind with the will to slaughter the wicked and protect everything that he still held dear. The words resonated with him, increasing his strength and sharpening his resolution.
Who are these monsters that want to come destroy my home? What gives them the right to murder and kill humanity? Who gave them the audacity to come to our homeland and try to take what is ours?
Before he knew it, Dion’s body felt hot as if he were burning from the inside.

Seeing the notification pop up in front of him, Dion was a little startled, but he did not have time to celebrate the achievement. He once again looked over the city wall at the incoming front line of the Beast Tide.
They were around 400 meters away from the walls, meaning it would soon be time for the first salvo of ranged attacks to take the stage. As if on queue, he heard a shout from the western wall.
“…ARCHERS! MAGES! Ready your attacks!”
Dion turned, only to see that his ranged units were also listening to the voice. ’Ah, it’s probably better this way.’ he thought inwardly. Rather than shouting over each other, it would make more sense for the whole unit to listen to one voice, in case things got chaotic.
No longer having to worry about organizing the ranged attacks, he turned his attention back to the plains. However the moment he turned and saw that the front line had yet to cross the 350 meter range, he heard a piercing noise, followed by a cacophony of arrows and spells being deployed.
Dion’s eyes widened in shock, “it’s too soon!”
Cursing under his breath, he watched the over 400 ranged attacks fly through the air towards the front line of the Beast Tide. Everything seemed to happen in slow motion, showing with unmistakable clarity that the ranged attacks were going to hit nothing but air.
Yet as the ranged attacks flew through the air, they hit an invisible wall, causing the fire spells to explode and the arrows to find purchase. The sound of flesh, arrows and spells colliding were deafening.
Dion’s mouth was agape as he watched flying monsters seemingly materialize in front of his eyes, right where the ranged attacks had been traveling. “W-What is this?” he cried in disbelief.
These winged creatures appeared suddenly, as if from a nightmare. They were covered in dark, shadowy material, and their wings looked like those of bats, only bigger. Their beaks were long and filled with sharp teeth, making them look menacing.
In the dim light, their pitch-black eyes and sinister faces were downright spooky. When they spread their wide wings, it created eerie shapes against the moonlight, like tattered cloaks of darkness.
At a glance there were at least 300 of these nightmarish creatures, yet with the first ranged salvo their numbers were decimated, leaving only a handful left to continue their charge.
Dion couldn’t help but look in the direction of the western side of the wall, an incredulous expression painted onto his dark face. How did Jayce know that there was an enemy hidden within the void? Thinking about what would have happened if these monsters breached the wall, he involuntarily shuddered.
Jayce, who had just recovered from his earlier fall, quickly watched as the ranged attacks sailed through the air, with no chance of hitting a target. ’F*CK!’ he swore inwardly, climbing back onto his rock and yelling, “DRAW!”
It was then that he heard a cacophony of squeals, alongside the sound of attacks landing on flesh. He turned around, only to see the flying monsters materialize out of nowhere after being battered by spells and arrows from their ranged attacks.
His jaw opened wide in horror and disbelief, seeing what was transpiring in front of him. However, he had no time to ponder on the matter, the Beast Tide was still approaching and they still had time to hit the monsters that were coming into their range.
He quickly changed gears, shouting out to the ranged units. “PREPARE!”
“Oho?” Rubick who had been lazing comfortably at the edge of the battlefield suddenly sat up, his interest piqued.
“Did you tell him about the Void Bats?” A gravelly voice traveled from behind him, a slight tone of accusation hidden beneath the words.
Rubick’s face contorted, feeling a wave of irritation threaten to overcome him. “I’d watch the next words out of your mouth. If you value your life that is.”
Leo shuddered involuntarily. However, in the next moment he felt full of rage, letting out a low growl he responded, “If the Lord’s find out that you interfered–”
Suddenly, Rubick disappeared from his chair, appearing in front of Leo in an instant. Before the Lion-man could react, a hammer appeared above his head and hurtled downwards, crushing him into the ground.
The force of the hammer’s impact with the ground caused the surroundings to shake violently, sending aftershocks throughout the plains, even causing Bastion’s walls to wobble in response. In one swift strike, the man named Leo had been turned to meat paste, never to utter another word again.
Rubick stood over the remains of Leo, calmly fixing the mask that had become tilted slightly after the activity. He clicked his tongue in dissatisfaction, before returning to his chair and picking it up, placing it in his Top hat with practiced ease.
“Now I have to miss out on an entertaining show.” he muttered in annoyance, taking one last look at the battlefield with reluctance.
“Good Luck my favorite supporter” he said in an eerie voice.
With a wave of his hand, the shadows in the surroundings seemed to come alive, swallowing him in one fluid motion. In the next moment he was gone, with only the remains of Leo being left as evidence of his visit.
