Chapter 103: Beast Tide (6)
After the sudden impact of the explosion, the plains were thrown into turmoil. Every human and monster present were overwhelmed by the sheer size and devastation of the blast, resulting in a brief lull in the battle.
The boss monsters who were sitting at the back of plains, stood to attention. Although they were beasts, one could see the light in their eyes change. The final boss monster who still remained shrouded, let out a low growl.
The low growl that emanated from the hidden boss monster sent a shiver down Jayce’s spine. It was a sound that seemed to crawl through the very fabric of reality, a chilling resonance that stirred primal fear. As the vibrations from that sinister growl coursed through the plains, the monsters beneath the blood-red moon reacted violently.
Screams and howls of pain pierced the night, echoing in a haunting chorus. The creatures, already frenzied by the chaos and destruction, now seemed to lose whatever remained of their tenuous grip on sanity. Their eyes turned a malevolent shade of red, and their jaws foamed with viscous saliva.
With an almost unnatural synchrony, their collective focus shifted back to the city walls of Bastion. It was as if a malevolent force had seized their minds, compelling them to converge on their target with a frantic urgency. Monsters trampled over one another, driven by a newfound madness, their forms blurring into a nightmarish tide of fur, scales, and chitin.
Jayce’s eyes narrowed as he observed this horrifying transformation. He knew instinctively that the hidden boss monster was behind this malevolent influence, a force capable of bending the will of its minions to its whims.
“This boss is trouble,” Jayce muttered, his voice tinged with a mixture of concern and determination. He understood that the true battle had only just begun. In the face of this unprecedented threat, he had to rally his forces and act swiftly.
With resolve in his heart, Jayce raised his voice, commanding the ranged group atop the city walls, “Fire at will!” The archers, mages, and marksmen immediately unleashed a relentless barrage of projectiles and spells, aiming at the oncoming horde of monsters with precision and speed.
Jayce had waited for the beast tide to reach the 50 meter mark before ordering the fire mages to activate the fuel traps that Colin had placed a few days prior. This way the explosions would have a higher impact, hitting as many monsters as possible and devastating the landscape.
Were it not for the intervention of the shrouded boss monster, the remnants of the vanguard would have been easy to pick off after suffering such a blow. However, now that the Beasts had regrouped, their opportunity had been cut short.
As the first wave of monstrous creatures reached the city walls, a cacophony of chaos and dread descended upon Bastion. The larger, more brutish monsters pounded relentlessly against the fortified walls, their colossal forms causing the stone structure to tremble under the relentless assault. The sheer force of their blows sent shockwaves up the structures.
At the same time, a swarm of more agile monsters, including large spider monsters, began to scale the walls with eerie grace. Their numerous legs scrabbled against the stone, their fangs dripping with venom, as they approached the defenders with malevolent intent.
Jayce’s commanding voice rang out across the ramparts. “Melee group, prepare for impact!”
His words served as a rallying cry for the warriors stationed along the walls. They braced themselves, gripping their weapons tightly and readying their hearts for the imminent clash. Colin stood at the forefront, bearing down at the approaching monsters, his trademark grin being revealed by the pale red moon.
In true Colin fashion, he held his kite shield above his head before slamming it into the ground. “Come at me you bastards!” he yelled with glee. Thankfully he controlled the strength of his kite shields descent, otherwise it could have been disastrous.
Hearing the taunt, the monsters, the monsters scaled the ramparts in droves, it was a horrifying sight. Enormous claws and paws reached up to grasp the defenders, while the more agile creatures, like the spiders and feline monsters, crawled and jumped nimbly upward, their eyes gleaming with hunger.
With a deafening clash of metal and the guttural cries of battle, the melee fighters engaged the monstrous horde head-on. Swords, axes, and maces met fangs, carapaces, and chitinous limbs in a whirlwind of combat.
The air was thick with the metallic tang of blood, the cries of agony, and the ferocious battle roars of the defenders. Blades flashed, spells detonated, and the defenders fought valiantly to hold back the encroaching tide of monsters.
The first wave of monsters to ascend the ramparts did not last long, mostly thanks to the work of Colin. Using his giant kite shield and club, he beat the monsters with unbridled joy, sending them plummeting down the city wall and onto the heads of the other ascending monsters.
Once again Jayce thanked his past self for not agreeing to let Colin help Kane. The man was like a defensive turret, beating back the monsters with relative ease and relieving the pressure on the melee units.
As the fight wore on, with little to no casualties, the defenders morale began to rise steadily. Watching the unstoppable Colin not let a single monster through, as well as seeing Jackie and Amber decimate the beasts below, they were filled with confidence.
Jayce stood at the forefront, his bloodfang dagger a blur of motion as he struck down any beast that dared to approach. His eyes were still scanning the battlefield in front of them, trying to capture its ebb and flow.
The void which had been created by the explosions earlier, was beginning to fill up as the next wave of monsters crossed the threshold. They would soon be in the archer and mages range, giving them another opportunity to cull the Beast army’s numbers.
Jayce turned his head, raising his torch once more. “Archers, Mages! Cease fire and wait for my signal to fire on the red flags.” His hoarse voice broke through the sounds of battle, gathering the attention of the ranged units.
They did as they were told, lowering their arms and catching their breaths. While the fight had not gone on for too long, they had fired at least 20 salvo’s in a short span of time. Taking a quick breather would only be beneficial in the long run.
