Chapter 196: Impressive Display
Jayce’s eyes fluttered open, his senses lingering on the ethereal feeling of the Law of Fire. It almost felt as if he had become fire itself, using his Qi as the fuel and his will to ignite it.
It was bizarre, yet it somehow felt almost natural. Even now he could feel the flames that had left his body, like they were an extension of him.
As his eyes laid upon the sight in front of him, Jayce almost cried out in shock. The flames which had originated from his hands had spread like a wildfire throughout the ranks of termites, reducing them to ash in mere moments.
The scene seemed like it was straight from the depths of Hell, it was a maelstrom of death and destruction. Screeches of pain and the roar of flames entered his ears, painting a dire picture of desperation.
The termites towards the back of the group had little time to react, quickly being consumed by the voracious flames whose hunger could not be quashed.
Leah, Tony and Lianna also watched on with fright as the flames leapt to the termites on their own side, transforming the originally imposing group of monsters into ash.
Every time a termite would catch on fire, a popping sound could be heard, followed by another screech of pain. With over ten thousand monsters assembled in close quarters, the cacophony of popping and screeching sounds made it almost seem as if they were listening to fireworks go off.
Of course that was only if they closed their eyes. Perhaps it would have been better if they did, rather than witnessing the massacre that took place.
The group watched on with different expressions as the once formidable army of termites were reduced to kindling, their lives exploding in a glorious display of fragility.
Soon enough, the screeches and popping sounds came to an end, leaving nothing but ash and smoke in the surroundings. The flames which had caused this scene had fizzled out after their fuel had been exhausted, yet their feat remained etched into everyone’s memory.
Silence crept over the plain for a couple of minutes while everyone digested what they had just seen.
’How the hell is he so strong?’ Leah thought inwardly, looking at the devastation in front of her. A mere few minutes ago, she had evaluated Jayce’s strength just a fraction higher than her own, yet this had all changed now.
Tony seemed stiff, gulping loudly every few moments. “G-Great job Master Jayce…” His words sounded forced and his face was pale, clearly finding the display of strength to be intimidating.
In fact, he was very close to soiling himself, remembering how much he had annoyed Jayce in the past. He did not doubt that if Jayce wanted to, he could have reduced their whole town to ash in mere minutes.
What Tony didn’t know, was that Jayce had only recently acquired this power as late as last night. While he probably still could have taken down their whole town, it definitely wouldn’t have been this easy.
Lianna was also shocked to some degree, however she quickly changed gears. Jayce was her trusted leader, therefore the stronger he was, the better it was for her and their faction. “Nice work!”
Jayce merely nodded, letting out a grunt of affirmation in response. He was probably the most shocked out of everyone, seeing what his flames had just done. He had merely scratched the surface of the Laws of Fire, yet it was already capable of such destruction.
What would happen if he were to fully comprehend this Law?
The mere thought of such a thing almost made him shiver. It was at this moment that Jayce knew he had made the right decision to forsake the system, regardless of the consequences in the future.
He knew that he would need to pave the way for others to adapt this form of strength as well. He had a nagging feeling that the system was not to be trusted, or perhaps it would be more accurate to say that it could not be relied on.
Jayce exhaled and gripped his fist tightly, there was still a lot that he did not know about this power, but at least for now it showed the potential to be a viable weapon against the monsters of Cataclysm.
The Laws seemed to be something that had always been in place, yet hidden by a veil. Was it the Apocalypse that had removed this veil? Or did humanity lose the means or qualifications to utilize it at some point until now?
These were questions that he would probably never know the answer to, but it did not bother him too much. All he needed to do was move forward one step at a time towards his goals.
Just as Jayce turned around to address the others, he saw Leah and Lianna sitting cross-legged on the ground with their eyes closed. Tilting his head, he looked towards Tony for an explanation.
“Ah… I don’t know what happened, Leah muttered something about a law? And then she sat down like that.” He responded, looking confused.
Jayce’s eyes lit up and he questioned Tony once more, “Can you tell me exactly what she said?”
Tony scratched the back of his head, thinking hard. “I think she said something like Nature is a cycle, Death and decay is also part of Nature’s Law.”
“Hmm” Jayce scratched his chin, deep in thought. “It seems they’ve gained some enlightenment.”
After making that statement, Jayce smiled ’It looks like these two will also become pioneers. Although I don’t know how I can activate their Qi.” Giving a quick shrug, he moved over to Tony and placed his hand on the man’s shoulder, causing him to almost jump in fright.
“You’re on babysitting duty. Watch over these two until they wake up.”
Tony blinked a few times, unsure of what to think. “Ah, how about you Master Jayce?”
“I’ve got some mining to do.” He replied simply, heading over to the hole he had created earlier.
