Chapter 237: It’s in your hands
Rubick’s words had given Jayce hope for the future. For the longest time, he had felt as if he was at the forefront against the unknown enemies. Yet knowing that he now had a backer, it was as if a huge weight had been lifted off his shoulders.
“Can you tell me some things about Earth’s evolution?” Jayce asked hesitantly.
Rubick thought for a moment before nodding. He leaned back into the lounge once more, getting comfortable.
Jayce tried to hide his excitement, but his wide eyes and fidgeting made his mindset obvious.
“I don’t understand what the system is, nor why or how monsters appeared on Earth suddenly. I originally thought that Cataclysm descended upon Earth, which would explain the monsters and system perfectly. But now I am lost.”
This was something that had been bothering him for a while now. Even after Rubick had mentioned Earth’s evolution, these were the two points that did not add up.
“I can’t go too into detail about the system.” Rubick said, shaking his head firmly. For some reason or another it must be a taboo subject that would pose a risk to his safety if revealed.
“The monsters however… They are races from world’s who have failed their evolution.”
“Failed…” Jayce murmured, almost not believing his ears.
Despite the explanation, his mind was still drawing blanks. How could a world fail to evolve? Scratch that, what was the prerequisites to successfully evolve a world to begin with?
“Yes, failed. The monsters as you call them, used to be inhabitants of worlds that had failed to evolve. Their bodies and souls are collected and used as fodder for other evolving worlds.”
Jayce was silent for a moment before asking seriously, “Did they used to be intelligent races?”
Rubick’s face stiffened for a moment, looking a little scary.
“Do not consider them as anything more than monsters. They are no longer the same as tfrom the moment their world’s collapsed.”
Seeing the grave look upon his face, Jayce felt a hint of trepidation flow through him. Thinking about all of the monsters he had faced over the past 11 years, he shivered involuntarily.
There were thousands of types of monsters. Goblins, wolves, lizards, not to mention the monsters with Draconic bloodlines that were one of the strongest in existence.
If these monsters were so strong, then how come their worlds had failed to evolve? Did that mean the prerequisites did not involve the inhabitants strength? Or did it mean something more.
Perhaps their worlds evolution had also been interfered with like Earth’s.
With that grim thought in his mind, Jayce felt the hair of his neck stand up. If this was the case, this would be a huge conspiracy that he had now become a part of.
Jayce narrowed his eyes, “This isn’t the first time those three deities have interfered in a world’s evolution is it?”
Rubick held his gaze for a few moments before letting out a sigh. “Sometime’s you’re too smart for your own good Jayce.”
He straightened up once more and leaned closer to Jayce, placing his elbows on his knees. “Listen here. You should be worrying about cleaning up your backyard first and dealing with the World Trial. If you fail, all will be lost.”
Jayce let out a small sigh. Of course he was right, what good would knowing all this information be if he ended up failing his mission. All of these things were far above his level.
In order to accomplish what he needed to do, there was only one way…
Get stronger.
His eyes hardened with determination. With the help of the man in front of him, he would become strong enough to protect the Earth and all his friends. Once he achieved this, he would ask Rubick these same questions.
“Those are good eyes.” Rubick said with a small smile.
“I have high hopes for you Jayce. Although I can’t help you directly, these should make up for that fact.” He said, getting up to his feet and producing a ring from his cloak pocket.
Jayce held out his hand and took the ring, a confused expression on his face.
“It’s a spatial ring. I’d recommend storing your precious items inside of it.” He said, giving Jayce a wink.
He stiffened in response, looking at the ring with a whole lot more enthusiasm this time. From that last comment, he assumed Rubick was reminding him not to trust the system’s inventory for important items.
“Thank you Mr. Rubick” Jayce stood up and bowed respectfully. This was one of the most sincere bows he had given in his whole life. With the information this man had provided him in addition to the resources, he could be labeled as the savior of Earth.
A small smile tugged at the corner of Rubick’s lips as he felt the sincerity within the gesture. In truth, he felt as if he had not given Jayce enough to truly succeed. If he had a choice in the matter, he would have provided far more help.
Unfortunately though, there was no way that such a thing would go unnoticed. He had already been accused of interfering during the Beast Tide. Even though he had been acquitted of all accusations, he was still on the radar.
Should his identity be revealed, there would be much more to lose.
“I should be the one thanking you Jayce. After all, Earth’s fate lies in your hands, not mine.” Rubick said softly, looking at his bowing figure.
“Remember, do not speak a word of my name, nor the contents of our discussion. Only 2 minutes have passed in the outside world, you should get some rest tonight and organize your plans tomorrow.”
’2 minutes??’ Jayce almost jumped in fright. The two had been chatting for at least an hour or so, possibly even more.
As he lifted his head, he saw the thin man wave his hand, before his eyes darkened and he felt the same sensation of being on the rough seas like before.
