Chapter 54: Blake’s Curiousity
“Vera! I fried some bird wings and made sweet and salty sauce to go with it, come here before I ate them all if you want it!” Blake shouted loud enough in front of the basement door.
Blake stood still in front of the door and lifted up five of his fingers.
‘5’ He said in his head while keeping his five fingers standing.
‘4’ He said while putting down one of the fingers.
‘3’ He said, putting down another one.
‘2’ Another one goes down.
‘1’
.....
‘0’ And now all five of his fingers were folded in his palms
‘Any second now...’ Blake thought while still looking at the wooden door in front of him.
Blake waited for another second, but there was still nothing happening.
‘Oh? Am I wrong this tim-‘
Just as Blake thought that he had miscalculated, the basement door opened up wide and a drop-dead gorgeous demoness came out of it.
Her red hair flowed down to her back, and although a bit messy as if it had never been combed for some time, it somehow still looked as smooth as silk despite the few strains of hair coming out here and there.
Two bat-like wings were neatly folded on her back so that she could walk around inside the house without hitting everything around her with them.
And the clothes she was wearing were the usual two-piece dress that Blake couldn’t figure out whether it looked comfortable or not to wear. Not that he minded too much about it since the demoness basically only wore that one clothes from the very first day and had never changed clothes.
Not that he changed clothes himself ever since Vera borrowed him one of her clothes that suited for a male humanoid demon since the clothes seemed to have the ability to stay clean even if his skin was smeared with dirt.
And added with the fact that Vera looked incredibly stunning with her clothes, Blake really didn’t have much to say about it and just enjoyed the beautiful sight that had come into his eyes.
“Do you want to eat right away or is there something you want to do first?” Blake asked after taking a full second to appreciate the view.
“Eat, of course.” Vera instantly replied after Blake closed his mouth.
“You haven’t cooked anything for the past three days.” She continued while staring intently at Blake’s eyes.
“Well... I did some hunting for the past few days and I get quite a lot from it.” Blake replied as he opened up his arms and circulate the nether from his heart all over his body as if telling her to see his progress for herself.
Vera stared at the humanoid demon in front of her for a split second. And she felt yet another significant increase in the quality of nether in his body as it became purer and even denser than before.
Her pupils dilated for a second as she was quite shocked by the fast progress of the humanoid demon in front of her.
But she quickly stopped the surprised reaction from ever spreading from her eyes, and succeeded in making it as if she wasn’t the slightest bit affected by his progress that had surpassed hers in speed by several times over.
“Oh? I see you’ve grown quite a lot. It really won’t be too long for you to evolve soon if you keep this up.” Were all the words that came out of her mouth despite her earlier shock.
‘How long had he been here again? A few weeks? A month? One and a half months at most.’
‘To reach this far in only a month is unthinkable...’ Vera thought to herself.
Just as she said, if Blake was really capable of progressing this fast, Vera thought that it would really be possible for Blake to evolve in 4 more months.
Which was unthinkable and simply didn’t make sense to her.
‘5 months from using his first ever nether to evolving for the first time...’ She thought while she kept her eyes on Blake, which made the latter slightly nervous after being stared at for so long.
But who could blame her? She had tried her best to act nonchalantly about Blake’s progress.
But thinking the fact that average demons took about a decade to evolve for the first time and the demon in front of her only needed about 3 months was simply irrational.
“Vera? Is there something on my face?” Blake asked with a genuinely confused look on his face.
Blake’s question then snapped her out of her thoughts and she shook her head, “No, there’s nothing. I am just wondering why are you waiting for me right in front of the door.”
“Ah! About that! I just want to show off my progress to you, nothing else.” Blake replied with a smile on his face.
But Vera felt something was off from Blake’s face and hence asked, “Really?”
Blake instantly replied, “Yep! For real, nothing else.” He said with an even brighter smile as if trying to hide his real thoughts.
Vera still felt something unusual with Blake, but she ignored it and just asked Blake where the food was before going there after Blake told her.
After Vera walked past him, Blake heaved a sigh with a slightly worried look on his face.
“Almost got caught there... Her instinct is really sharp.” Blake muttered under his breath after Vera had gone into the other section of the room.
The reason why Blake stood in front of the door was really that he wanted to show her how much progress he had made so far since he had been gone from home for a couple of days straight and only coming back once or twice in a whole week.
And Blake didn’t even meet Vera since she was busy in her basement, not coming out of there unless he cooked something for her.
Hence why the second reason for him to stand still and count with his fingers in front of the door.
He had a theory about her. He could just ask her about it right on her face.
But remembering how girls act, well, at least from the information that he read on the internet, online communities, and social media platforms, he didn’t think that it would be proper for him to ask her straight.
And that was because his theory was that Vera was a bonafide glutton. Or to put in a layman’s and much more polite term, she likes to eat very much.
The signs were clearly obvious. Starting from the portion that she was capable of eating, which was several times the amount that Blake could ever fit in his mouth.
Just say that the amount of food Vera could eat in one sitting was the same amount that Blake was capable of eating in seven sittings, and that was if he eat until he was full every time.
And other than the portion that she ate, the quick response that she gave every time he told her there was food on the table, especially the food with the combination sauces that he made, was considered instantaneous compared to other cases where he knocked on the basement door and only gotten an answer after half a minute or didn’t even get a response at all.
Now that he was a demon himself, Blake knew that he rarely needs to eat real food since eating souls would also give him the sense of something filling and energizing his body.
And with each level up, Blake could feel that he need to consume less and less food as his body rarely felt hungry.
Eating the occasional food that he cooked himself was only a way for him to ease his mental stress as the food itself worked as a literal comfort food to comfort his mind and rarely that he actually felt that hungry to begin with.
But the fact that Vera, who supposedly came from a deeper demon realm and was uncountably much stronger than him, never misses a single meal that he ever cooked ever since coming to the demon realm, raised a question in his mind.
‘Did she like to eat very much because she stayed cooped up in the basement all the time doing her experiments and needed to ease her mental burden by eating? Or does she likes to eat in general? Or is it because of something else?’ Blake pondered as he started making his way to the dining table.
‘Ah, whatever, it’s not like it means anything that she likes to eat more than the others.’ Blake shrugged as he dumped his theory about Vera being a glutton to the back of his mind as he saw she was already on her second plate of fried bird meat.
“Leave some for me please!” He said while hurrying his steps onto the large wooden table.
