Chapter 212: Host Immune to Thirst Attacks
’Huh?’ Hao blinked.
This girl… did she just try to charm him?
He wouldn’t have even noticed it if not for the system’s warning. It was that well-hidden.
Across from him, Whis suddenly froze in place.
Her bewitching smile stayed on her lips, but it wasn’t because she was still confident. It was because she couldn’t do anything else.
She had stopped moving entirely.
No twitch. No breath. No glare.
Confusion poured into her brain.
She couldn’t even begin to understand what just happened.
Something had gone completely wrong.
Whis didn’t even feel pain or a force strike her down. It just happened.
One second, she thought her charm had connected to the human.
The next, her body didn’t belong to her anymore.
Did her charm ability backfire?
No.
If it had, she’d be clinging to the human in front of her, trying to win his affection with sparkly eyes and sweet words.
She had already observed the human earlier when they stepped into this strange, isolated store. His qi reserves deserved some credit.
They were unusually pure. But that could easily be attributed to one thing: his qi seemed entirely reliant on the presence of sunlight. Aside from that, his cultivation realm wasn’t even close to hers.
There was nothing powerful. Nothing mysterious.
Just a clueless face.
He even looked confused when she used her charm.
So how… how was he doing this to her?
Hao raised his hand.
He didn’t say anything. Just lifted his palm.
’Master!’
In a flash of movement, Kurome’s form vanished into a blur of shadow, reappearing closer using her innate step art.
’Please forgive her. She does not understand.’ Kurome said, eyes locked on Hao.
Little Sneak was just as fast. He flung himself forward.
’Wait! Human! Stop! It’s my fault!’
But just as Kurome and Little Sneak reached within arm’s length –
Thunk!
They both hit something invisible.
It was as if they ran headfirst into solid stone.
Except it wasn’t just solid stone. If it were, they could have shattered it with force alone.
But this. This unmoving force didn’t even flinch.
Kurome stumbled back two steps, her ears twitching. Little Sneak flopped onto the floor and rolled once before springing back up with wide eyes.
They looked ahead.
A barrier. A clear dome of unseen force now surrounded Hao and Whis. It shimmered faintly when touched, rippling with a strange light.
[Possible interference detected, host. Deploying protective boundary now. Would you like to initiate physical inspection? Purely for tactical purposes, of course.]
“…”
’I’m not a degenerate, system.’
[Woah. Relax, host. You’re getting ahead of your own head. It’s a suggestion about basic contact-based interrogation.]
Hao didn’t even bother replying. He simply tuned the voice out as if the system had never spoken in the first place.
He stepped forward.
Meanwhile, Whis had gone completely quiet.
She had already accepted it.
If this was the end, then so be it.
She hadn’t meant harm. But it didn’t matter. In the wilderness, it never did. Intent didn’t protect you from claws and fangs.
If you dared provoke something beyond your ability to handle, you paid the price. No excuses. That was the law of survival.
Her charm technique had never failed before. She didn’t just rely on it. She was built on it.
And yet now, it had crumbled instantly, no feedback, no warning. Just silence – and the absolute loss of control.
That could only mean one thing.
She wasn’t strong enough.
Whis expected a strike. Maybe a sealing technique. Anything brutal.
Instead, Hao placed a single finger beneath Whis’ chin.
That deep bronze complexion? Criminally good. The kind of shade that made her look sculpted out of luxury. She was the type of woman that could bag a thousand cultivators with just half a smirk and the casual flex of a hip.
Face? Deadly.
Body? Built to cause misunderstandings in three realms and two sects.
But Hao wasn’t here to admire.
He let out a slow breath… then his middle finger sparked faintly with heat.
Pak!
He flicked her right on the forehead.
A sharp little snap echoed through the store.
A puff of smoke rose from her forehead.
Whis blinked in shock, the sharp sting pulling her senses back instantly. Her eyes widened as her body, finally, responded again.
“Ghh -”
“Kurome. Chibisuke. Handle her.” Hao said without looking back, already walking toward the counter.
Kurome narrowed her eyes. Little Sneak gasped dramatically.
Behind the counter, Hao exhaled again.
’Phew… that was awkward.’ He rubbed his temples.
’Hope my acting was passable.’
He wasn’t the type to kick someone out just because they messed up once – especially not if they were close to Kurome.
But he also wasn’t the type to let someone walk all over him either.
That flick?
Just a gentle reminder.
She stepped out of line, and he drew one.
Did he want revenge? No.
Romance? Nah.
Sure, she was hot enough to burn through three layers of spiritual resistance.
But Hao didn’t feel a single spark unless there was love in the mix.
No affection, no attraction. That simple.
He glanced at his hand. ’If there’s no feelings, there’s no butterflies.’
That was what his old man used to say back home:
“Son, only drool over someone you’d proudly introduce to your mother. Not someone you’d block the next morning.”
He said it while grilling barbecue in slippers, TV remote tucked in his waistband, and somehow always holding a toothpick.
Sounded goofy. Sounded dumb.
But yeah… that works.
Hao stared straight ahead, trying his best to pretend the last few minutes didn’t just happen.
But on the other side, things were only just beginning.
A low growl rumbled through the air.
Kurome walked forward, shadows flickering under her feet.
’You have forgotten yourself, Whis.’
Whis didn’t dare speak.
’To bare your fangs at my master… in his own territory… without cause, without reverence.’
’Have the stars fallen from the sky? Has the old law been erased?’
The shadows deepened. Even the light seemed to dim.
’You are lucky, Whis, that my master is far more forgiving than I am.’
’Had you dared such a thing elsewhere – before one not bound by kindness – you would not be standing.’
