“How long will it take?” asked Zhu Minglang.
Nan Yuso glanced at the city wall and then at the plains that had turned into quicksand before answering, “Not too long.”
“Good, I and the people from the Xuange Divine Country will do our best to hold back these Nightwalkers,” Zhu Minglang nodded in agreement.
The variety of nocturnal creatures was vast, with many lurking in the darkness, invisible to the common folk, let alone fighting and contending with them.
The people of God, God’s Descendants, and the Divine Chosen could all rely on the divine starlight from the heavens to perceive these night spirits while their abilities would be infused with a thread of Divine Power, exerting a strong suppression and striking effect on these nocturnal entities.
Among those of equal strength, a person of God could take on more than five times the number of night creatures, a God’s Descendant could take on ten times as many, and a Divine Chosen could achieve even stronger effects…
...Of course, the higher-tier Nightwalkers had their resistance against those imbued with traces of Divine Power. For example, against creatures like the Yama Dragon, even a True God might not be able to suppress them.
The Yama is easy to avoid, but the lesser ghosts are troublesome. The Night creatures have thousands of skills: soul-snatching, curses, nightmares, evil illusions, temptations, ghostly traps… They are endlessly cunning in hunting the souls of the Yang Realm. If a Cultivator lacks the protection of a deity, a moment of carelessness could lead to their total consumption, bones and all, for these night creatures defy common understanding.
Therefore, to fight against darkness, common folk really didn’t play a big role; only the earthly emissaries of God had the ability to contend.
Zhu Minglang was now considered the highest-ranking presence on site. Those experts from the Holy Quel Continent probably couldn’t be of much use. Mi Zhongyun and his godly people might even be more effective than top continent experts like the Chief Guardian and Vice Dean He, at least they were able to perceive the ghostly and evil breeds in the dark.…
Without rest, to prevent Nightwalkers from breaking into the city and wreaking havoc, Zhu Minglang had to stand outside the city walls. The radiance of the Divine Chosen emanating from him was distinct to the creatures of the night, like a burning flame in the Dark Forest: as long as the flame didn’t extinguish, the jackals and tigers and leopards hiding in the darkness didn’t dare come close.
In a similar way, other individuals with certain Divine Envoy status were like campfires, torches, illuminating the darkness…
However, there were more nocturnal creatures wandering the plains than expected, seemingly aware that the city was protected by numerous envoys of the divine, and they had gathered in vast numbers.
The night was like thick ink, impossible to dissipate.
Bright lights were meaningless against such darkness; one could not see clearly the pitch-black plains, and even the starlight from the thirty-three True Gods in the heavens was swallowed up upon reaching this area. The silhouettes of the trees were invisible, the lines of distant mountains unseen, as thick deathly energy rushed forth.
Come nightfall, everything became strange!
What was outside was no longer the official road, forests, or plains; it more closely resembled the Demon Abyss, Ghost Domain, and Underworld.
Zhu Minglang stood resolutely outside the collapsed city walls, buoyed by his righteous qi, flanked by the Moon Blessing White Dragon and the Heavenly Slaughter Dragon on either side.
Bai Qi, as a growing Divine Dragon, also had a brilliance that clashed with the darkness. The Heavenly Slaughter Dragon had a true Heart of God, but it did not have the kind of light that could deter and disperse darkness because it was also a Dragon from the Underworld, a night spirit from the same world as the Nightwalkers.
The chilly wind rustled through the air, while in Zhu Minglang’s eyes, a white flame seemed to be flickering. Through the dark mists, he saw that the road outside had become unexpectedly muddy. Then he saw streams of bright red liquid slowly flowing together in front of him, eventually forming a long, blood-red muddy path!
It was like a scarlet carpet, yet so unsettlingly thick and sticky.
This striking red was chilling to the bone, especially in such a pitch-black environment; it was impossible to know where this blood-drenched path ultimately led.
Upon the bloody trail, a red sedan chair suddenly appeared!
The sedan chair resembled the grand eight-bearer marrying chair commonly used for newlyweds. If it were on an ordinary street, this red chair could have been considered exquisitely beautiful, inciting curiosity about the presumably charming beauty inside.
However, on this bloodflowing long path, in this eerily windy, spooky night, such a blood-red chair was enough to make one’s skin crawl with goosebumps. ŗά₦ɵᛒËS
Zhu Minglang’s righteous energy dissipated by more than half, leaving him exposed as if in the biting cold of the wilderness, his skin rapidly freezing to a pale, purplish hue. His eyes, too, lost the fiery brilliance they had moments ago!
What was this??
An unseen night creature never encountered before!!
In previous adventures in the night, including the crossroad at the Dark Vortex of the Underworld, Zhu Minglang had never felt such a horrifying presence. Although he was a Divine Chosen capable of dispersing a hundred ghosts, he now seemed utterly insignificant compared to whatever existed inside this sedan chair!
Zhu Minglang felt his heart pounding.
A sedan chair, uncarried by anyone, eerily “walking” towards him — there was nothing more unsettling than this!
“It… it’s the Night Empress.” Mi Rong’s voice trembled, one could imagine her entire body shaking at this moment.
Zhu Minglang’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he tried to keep himself calm.
If Ancestral Dragon City wasn’t behind him, Zhu Minglang would have turned tail and run, for even from its aura alone, it was clear this entity was insurmountable!
The Night Empress!!
At least of the same level as the Yama Dragon!
“Young master, it’s getting late, and if this young lady returns home tardy, father will definitely assume I’ve been secretly meeting with a wild man outside…” From inside the sedan chair, a soft and enchanting voice emerged, merely hearing it sparked imaginations of a beauty within the chair.
Zhu Minglang stood there dumbfounded, unsure of how to respond to the woman speaking from the chair.
“Father would rather throw me into a well and drown me than to harm our family’s honor, so this young lady cannot return home late, she must not, at all costs. I plead with the young master to let me pass so that I can return home sooner.”
The woman’s voice from the chair was soft and delicate, sounding so pitiful that it easily aroused a protective instinct.
Zhu Minglang took deep breaths. He looked at the chair stopped on this blood-drenched long road, it was impossible to distinguish what exactly was behind the beaded curtains, but the words she spoke were increasingly bone-chilling!
“Brother Zhu, we can’t expose her, otherwise, she will immediately go into a frenzy and slaughter,” Mi Rong whispered urgently at this time.
Zhu Minglang nodded and, after hesitating for a moment, replied in accordance with the context provided by the Night Empress: “It is night now, and I stand guard here to prevent thieves from intruding. May I ask which family’s young lady you are? I need to verify your identity before I can allow you to pass.”
