This contract is similar to the oath that lamp bearers make to the god of justice. The oath is enforced by a god and can be broken by a god. That means it will have limited effectiveness against both Legion and Tesla.
Both of them aren’t gods yet, but they will be in the future. In fact, Tesla might become a god before Legion by normal standards.
This is because Tesla is already a very strong godclad while Legion hasn’t become a godclad yet. So Tesla might be the first to break free from the contract. At that time, he and Legion might become enemies.
He is not worried about that because before Tesla becomes a god, he must have widespread influence with Legion’s technology, which will make Legion rich. That is his goal, so having Tesla become his enemy is a risk he is willing to take.
There is also no reason for Tesla to become his enemy. After all, they are business partners, and he hasn’t done anything to cheat Tesla. If anything, he has helped Tesla by putting him on the fast track to becoming a god.
Common sense will dictate that Tesla should be grateful to him. But if that doesn’t happen, he doesn’t mind it because he won’t be the only one Tesla becomes an enemy with if Tesla decides to break off the contract.
The god of steam will be very unhappy if Tesla breaks the contract. So even though it is possible to break the contract, the deterrent of the god of steam is still there. Only those who can resist or at least avoid the god of steam will be able to break the contract without suffering any loss from doing so.
He didn’t consider the issue of breaking the contract for too long because he didn’t have the intention to break the contract. He needs a partner or a pawn that will act as his partner, and Tesla is the best that he can get, so he doesn’t plan to break the contract at all.
There is just not much to gain from breaking the contract. He would have as much money as he wants with ownership of 50% of Tesla’s business. Any more money, and it will be irrelevant.
As for Tesla, even if he manages to avoid the god of steam, Legion is sure that he can deal with him.
He believes that he can deal with Tesla on his own either with his own strength or with the knowledge that he has of Tesla. So he went ahead with the signing with confidence.
The contract was signed between two parties, and it was witnessed by the god of steam. The two parties didn’t meet to sign the contract. They simply exchanged documents between themselves using the altar of the god of steam and signed what needed to be signed.
There was also an exchange of information. One of that information was Legion’s bank account details. He sent his account information to use it to receive his money from Tesla.
He also sent his identification information so that Tesla would know who he is. He did so so that Tesla could reach him outside of the church of the god of steam and to put into effect the promise that Tesla made about not harming him.
He had made Tesla promise that he wouldn’t harm him. That is important because Tesla will have everything he wanted now that the contract has been signed. If, by chance, Legion disappears, then Tesla won’t need to give him that 50% anymore.
While the promise is important, it is also important that Tesla know who he is, or the promise will be useless. After all, if Tesla doesn’t know who he is and, by chance or accident, destroys the whole Ivory town where he lives, then it won’t be Tesla’s fault that Legion died.
He didn’t make such promises, though. Only Tesla had to promise not to harm his partner, not Legion.
This is completely unfair, but Tesla didn’t ask him and couldn’t ask him to do it because the man was desperate to and would have agreed to almost anything since this was related to him becoming a god. Besides, he didn’t think he had anything to worry about, Levi the Mortal inventor.
Legion didn’t promise that he wouldn’t harm Tesla because he had plans to harm his pawn. He just wanted that option if it were available.
If he is being honest, he is not entirely comfortable with Tesla using him to become a god. It is true that he is also using Tesla, but what they are using each other for is not equal.
Tesla is using him to become a god while he is using Tesla to get money to begin his journey as a godclad. What they are using each other for doesn’t seem fair at all.
Even if it were fair, Legion still wouldn’t be happy with it. He won’t be happy until he can use his position to leverage for more benefits from Tesla. So he left himself an option to do so outside of their business.
The entire process of signing the contract was smooth and fast. They completed it in less than one hour.
Legion stayed in the church during this time. Tesla was also staying close to an altar of the god of steam wherever he was. The two of them exchanged contracts, read them, and then signed them with the god of steam as the witness.
The process was not free. The god of steam had to be paid for indulging them in using his altar and for acting as their witness. It cost a lot of money, but it didn’t concern Legion because Tesla paid for everything.
After the contract was signed, he and Tesla officially became partners. The first order of business after that was for Tesla to send 100 gold coins to him.
That is something he had to do as soon as possible or be in contempt of the contract and the god of steam.
