Chapter 66: Beginnings of the Secret Society (4)
“Do you think you’ll be okay after offending us?” The boss cursed as his spittle flew all around like targeted artillery, “Your deaths won’t be pleasant. Your friends, family, everyone you know would live a life worse than death. You have offended a force that even the Heroica Empire dares not offend.”
“Oh really?” The lady smiled, making a comical display of fear, “B-But, if I was alive, I would have been scared. But what will I do now? Your threats are laughable.”
“W-What?” The boss was alarmed, noticing zero fear in the eyes of the other party. Having been the boss of the city’s underground for numerous years, he had a good judge of character and was able to grasp their emotions with a glance.
And with that, he realised, clearly so, that the lady before him wasn’t in the least bit scared. Just the notion caused him fear. Moreover, the lady had just pointed at him before and a hole appeared in his knee cap, destroying it, causing him immense pain. So, he was unable to even think straight, only resorting to worded threats.
Compass Carburettor was indeed not afraid of the behemoth of an organisation that he had scratched. His field of vision was incomparably broad. Having been to the System World and having witnessed the incomparably fear-inducing Deer System, it would take a lot before he could feel fear.
As compared to the fear he sensed from the Deer System, the people he was fighting against was nothing. Moreover, Compass Carburettor wasn’t even at a disadvantage here. Rather, he always held the initiative, leading his foes by the nose.
“Now, let’s see…” The lady placed her index finger before her lips, motioning for the boss to shut up as she then pointed it at his other knee cap, “Shall we start with a basic interrogation?”
She then nodded at Fealta, causing the other party to drag one of the boss’s underlings to the other side of the room. Caithy then erected a wall using her energy blade, completely blocking the other side.
This way, the boss was able to see everything that happened on the other side but was unable to hear anything, causing him more fear as the lady said, “It seems the two of you know the most. So, we’ll be interrogating you simultaneously. If there is any discrepancy in what you said, you’ll lose your other knee cap first. Following it would be your ankles, then your knuckle. Well, let’s see how many you would lose before you are willing to speak the truth.”
“P-Please, spare me. I’m just a humble trader.” The Boss began to cry as he felt his blood gushing out of his wound, causing his head to spin at the blood loss. He was afraid that he would die. As someone who had lived a good part of his life ruling over others, he valued his life.
So, he didn’t wish to die.
“If you don’t hurry, you’ll die. And,” The lady laughed, “We only plan to spare one of you. The one who speaks the truth first gets to live. As for the other, well, you know the drill.”
“I’ll talk! Dammit! I’ll talk!” The Boss gave in instantly, overwhelmed with fear the moment he noticed his underling opening his mouth to speak. This was a simple but effective psychological torture.
When two people were privy to the truth, making them see the actions of each other while interrogating them was the best. After all, the moment the other party opens his/her mouth to speak, it means they are ready to spill the truth. Whether they are really speaking the truth or not wasn’t important, but their actions were.
Adding onto the simple threat Compass Carburettor had given out, it was easy to break the mind of a person. Inflict pain first, make the interrogator seem inhuman, unafraid of the interrogated party, and split the interrogated party’s colleagues—the ones privy to the truth—into different chambers, visible but inaudible.
That was enough to drill out all the truth voluntarily as they would race to spill out the beans first, with the hope that they would be the one to survive. Only one of them had to open their mouth for this to happen, inciting a chain reaction.
And since they are also being physically tortured, they were bound to open their mouths, at least to scream in pain.
It was so easy to achieve that it was laughable, but at the same time, scary.
As the Boss began to speak, his underling noticed it, speaking faster. And upon seeing the underling, the Boss rushed to spill out everything, saying, “We rigged every gambling event to ensure only those that had signed a contract with us would win. And to sign those contracts, they have to give us one of their kidneys. In exchange, we’ll allow them to win. But, we usually half-ass the operation, causing the people to die from diseases within a year. We’ll then retrieve all their assets and repeat the process.”
“As for all the stolen kidneys, we exchange them with the Grogar that live in the east. In return, we obtain Darble Crystals and Kepadora, a drug that we sell to the city’s nobility and make them dependant on us,” The Boss said in a fluster, noticing his words getting a lisp as he had lost a lot of blood, speaking even faster to survive.
“Kepadora is a drug that only the Grogar can create. It is a mysterious drug that has anti-ageing properties. When someone takes a sufficient quantity of it, they can easily live for double the human life. But in return for its effects, it causes people to turn vicious and desire human blood. If they stop taking the drug, they’ll turn into mindless monsters that would hunt every human they see to drink their blood.”
“We have caused the nobility to become dependent on us through this.” The Boss said while shedding tears, noticing the pain in his knee cap increasing after a minute had passed for some reason, “A-And, since the Grogar are monsters from a Level 1 Dungeon, we even obtained enough Darble to create our own force of Warriors and Puppeteers. Using this, we have expanded our influence throughout the city.”
