Inheritor Of Magic: The Magi King

Chapter 1072 Asmodai and the Saints

Chapter 1072: 1072 Asmodai and the Saints

“You knew him personally?” Wolfe asked.

Asmodai nodded. “When he first came back from the Demon Realms, he spent a fair bit of time here, courting a young lady from our Family.

She was an Oracle, and knew that it could never work out, but he was a persistent one, as all Noxus men are known to be, and he kept trying to convince her that the short term would be worth the eventual parting.

He was going by Don Giovanni at that time, a personal affection of the older Magi, and he was quite possibly the smoothest talker that I had ever heard in my very long life.

But that was the problem. He was entirely too adept at talking women out of their undergarments, and the Oracle saw through him like a freshly washed window. I can’t say that it was unexpected, but I do admire the gall that it took to try anyhow.

But due to his frequent visits, as the Noxus Main House is only a hundred kilometres east of here, we became rather good friends, and it was him that petitioned for my title of The ’Loyal’ when I reached Sainthood.

So, even when the young Miss of the Chronos Family rejected him, repeatedly, we remained good friends.”

Wolfe laughed inwardly. It seemed that some things ran in the Family.

“So, it’s his fault that everyone I run into from other worlds remembers the Noxus Family as either Harem Kings or masters of the Undead.” Wolfe responded after a few seconds.

Asmodai shook his head. “Not the second part. He was one of the few who didn’t end up as a proper undead, though he ended up turning half the world into them, so perhaps it still counts.

The Noxus Family Patriarchs were notoriously adamant that knowledge not be lost, so they would curse themselves as undead when their time was running out, to buy themselves another thousand years or so in the background, passing on their legacy, before they would move on to the afterlife.

It led to an odd situation, where there were almost always two leaders in the Family, one living, one undead.”

Wolfe nodded. That wasn’t the case right now, and hadn’t been since the war, but there might have actually been some Noxus Family members down here who could have qualified for the role.

So, he asked. “If the Noxus Family home is down here, how is it that there was nobody to qualify for the role of Patriarch between my father’s original reign and my own?”

Castellan Asmodai, or the Loyal Saint, as he was once known, simply sighed and sat down at the nearby table, motioning for Wolfe to join him.

“It seems that there is much your father didn’t tell you. How much did he share of his past?”

Wolfe shook his head. “Mother died in an accident, and he dematerialized his new body to join her when I was still young. I didn’t even know who he really was until very recently, and he didn’t say anything about the Magi Clans.

Until last year, it was a death penalty in most of the world to be found to have Magi powers.”

Asmodai sighed. “So the humans won, then?”

Wolfe frowned. “Nobody really won. The survivors from the Magi Clans remade the world’s surface to end the war and prevent another. There were nearly zero survivors from the Magi Clans and rebel witches, as the last of the Saints sacrificed themselves to cast the spell, but there were only two Saints left among the Witches on the One World Army side, and the population plummeted to under half a billion by the end of the war.”

Asmodai looked shocked. “Half a billion died in the war? Five hundred million dead? Are the humans insane?”

Wolfe gave a rueful chuckle. “No, half a billion lived the other seven and a half billion died during the war, including over seven hundred million on this continent alone. That’s why they sunk it as a war memorial before they reshaped the surface.”

The Lich Lord simply sat silent for a full ten minutes as he tried to process that news.

“So, the reason nobody has claimed the positions of the Family Patriarchs is because…” He began, then trailed off.

“Because there is nobody left. Everyone is dead or left the planet in advance.” Wolfe finished.

The undead slowly got up from his chair and walked into the other room, and then came back with a small box that had a stasis spell on it. He opened the cover, and Wolfe realized that it was a box of cigars.

Asmodai carefully snipped the end, then used Fire Magic to light the tobacco, puffing slowly before he closed the box again, keeping the cigars fresh.

Wolfe simply waited as the undead man silently smoked the cigar to a nub that nearly burned his fingers. Then, he was finally ready to speak again.

“I see now why you offered to take a Family Stone to the surface for me. Because there is nobody from the Family there to do it. I will make you what you need, and hopefully, my family can be restored to some degree.

But you need to go to the Noxus Family home. There are many things stored there which only the Family Patriarch or ranking members can access, and the spells are still fully intact.

Generations of Kings reinforced them, each adding a different twist to the basic spell, so that visitors could see and feel the long legacy of Noxus Kings.” Asmodai explained.

“That sounds incredibly impressive. But I won’t rush you. Make sure that what you send to the surface is everything that newfound members of your Family might need. Keep in mind that the historical records were all falsified or destroyed after the war, so they know nothing, and most of them didn’t even know that they were Magi until just now.

I should also warn you that some of them will be beastkin. Demihumans mixed with animals so that their ancestors were reminded of the innocent lives lost to the war. So, if you do get a particularly odd-looking visitor in the future, don’t be alarmed.”

Asmodai smiled at Wolfe’s explanation. That was definitely the work of one of the Witch Consorts, and perhaps the Undying Saint.

“I will make a remote viewing spell as well, so that I can directly instruct Family Members in essential skills, and they don’t create a burden on others. Just give me a few hours and I will have everything ready.”
