Chapter 1005: The Terrifying Dead Spirit
The Ninth Spirit Mountain was so tall it almost reached the sky. It almost looked as if it was above the clouds. A mysterious figure cloaked in grey stood on the edge of the cliff, holding on to a blood-red sickle and looking as if they had been standing there since the start of time.
“That is no living spirit. He must have already been dead during ancient times. He’s a dead spirit that’s been existing for who-knows-how-long,” the Multicolor Queen remarked, her face serious. The entire Ninth Spirit Mountain was covered with a thick layer of deathly aura. There was not a single trace of life in a thousand-mile radius, and it was exceptionally deserted here. As a living spirit, she was repulsed by this aura. The deathly aura was pervasive and something constricted in her chest.
“Welcome. It’s been 70 million years since a living spirit has come to this place.”
The mysterious figure cloaked in grey floated over slowly, his cloak billowing in the air despite a lack of wind. In the hundred-mile radius, a shrill wailing rang out from somewhere. It was almost as if the Ninth Spirit Mountain had morphed into hell on the mortal plane.
“When you said 70 million years, were you referring to the ancestor of the Multicolor Clan?” Shock colored the Multicolor Queen’s face. Her gaze was fixed firmly on the grey figure. As expected, the ancestor had made it to the Ninth Spirit Mountain.
“Ancestor? Huh, I just realized the aura of your bloodline is rather similar to that of the other living spirit. I didn’t expect her to have been your ancestor. It’s been such a long time since I’ve had human flesh, just the thought of it excites me.”
The figure cloaked in grey remained suspended in the air, unmoving. However, the group could not help the vile image of an evil monster licking its lips from manifesting in their heads.
Mental interference. Most dead spirits had a unique talent, and that was to make living spirits create a mental environment. When they killed living creatures, most of the creatures would look terrified and fearful beyond compare. However, for the mental interference of the grey-robed figure to affect even the three Great Kings was truly a frightening issue.
“Did my ancestor make it through here or not?”
The Multicolor Queen’s face twitched slightly. The dead spirit was making her hair stand on end. Did her ancestor fail, after all, and get consumed by this dead spirit? Just the thought of this was enough to chill the Multicolor Queen down to her bones. This whole time, that ancestor had been the reason why she had faith she could succeed. One could even say that that ancestor’s success dictated how confident she was. If her ancestor had failed, what would become of them?
Her ancestor had been a queen who was beautiful beyond compare and stronger than the current Multicolor Queen. And her partner was even more impressive — one could say he was the strongest practitioner in all of the ancient lands. If the two of them did not make it through the Ninth Spirit Mountain in the Nine Spirits Road, then the four of them basically had no hope!
“All I know is that you lot will definitely not make it past me, and you’ll become offerings for me,” the grey-robed dead spirit snickered vilely. Under his dark hood, two beams of scarlet red blood light shot out.
Mo Wen frowned slightly. The dead spirit was not answering her question directly and was intentionally avoiding giving a clear answer. The two of them had most likely succeeded back then.
The Multicolor Queen was no fool. She had immediately thought of this. In that instance, her heart settled a little. Since her ancestor had succeeded, then they had hope as well.
“The dead spirit’s cultivation is already at the later stage of the Tide Changing Realm and, since it’s a dead spirit, he’s far more terrifying than the puppets,” the Jade Xiu King said with a serious look on his face. The dead spirit was no worse than a human preliminary cultivator who had the same level of cultivation. On top of that, it had the added bonus of being a dead spirit, so it was likely to be far stronger in combat.
“No matter what, we should give it a try. I’m resilient and sturdy, so I’m going to go get a feel for things. You guys stand back.”
The Ink Scaled King took a step forward, heading slowly towards the cliff. The other three of them immediately stepped back. This was because the gatekeeper’s abilities would increase by as many challengers as were present. They stepped out of the boundaries of the Ninth Spirit Mountain so the Ink Scaled King would be facing the grey-robed dead spirit at his weakest.
As expected, the dead spirit’s aura dropped the moment the three of them stepped back.
“Its cultivation is still at the later stage of the Tide Changing Realm. This...”
The Jade Xiu King’s face was tight with worry. He had been keeping an eye on the dead spirit’s aura, only to find out that its cultivation was still at the later stage of the Tide Changing Realm even after the three of them had stepped out of the Ninth Spirit Mountain. In other words, the dead spirit’s cultivation would be, at the very least, at the pinnacle if the four of them appeared before him together. It was barely a step away from the Tide Changing great attainment.
“That’s terrifying. There’s no way the Ink Scaled King is a match for the dead spirit.” The Multicolor Queen’s face was drawn tight, and her colorful eyes were filled with despair.
A dead spirit at the later stage of the Tide Changing Realm. There was practically no one who was a match for this dead spirit. Even the strongest of them, the Jade Xiu King, could not match up to him.
Howl!
The Ink Scaled King invoked the peak of his strength. His body was covered in an armor of black scaled, and his hand gripped the Qilin halberd. He stood with the grey-robed dead spirit
And yet in just one move, the Ink Scaled King was sent flying away with a smack. A figure draped in grey robes followed him like a shadow. The red sickle transformed into a blood light and the terrifying deathly aura suddenly surged forth. Like a river flowing to the sea, the blood light slowly merged into the blood light.
“That doesn’t look good. Run, Ink Scaled.”
The Jade Xiu King’s face turned pale. The dead spirit was too strong, The Ink Scaled King could not even handle one blow from him. The Ink Scaled King was one of the three Great Kings of the ancient lands. In terms of defensive power, there was no doubt that he was the strongest. And yet, the Jade Xiu King felt as if just one blow from the dead spirit could shatter the Ink Scaled King any moment.
The Jade Xiu King did not think too much before he morphed into a ray of white light and rushed forth, preparing to stop the dead spirit and rescue the Ink Scaled King. The three Great Kings of the ancient land millions of years of history between them, and they had a strong bond. They were in a spot that was high as it was lonely, so there were but a few people to ally with.
“Huh! You’re going to pay for trying to kill me.”
The Ink Scaled King was undeniably brave and did not retreat even in the face of death. The ink-black flames on its body rolled off like explosions, and the air around it warped under its force. The Qilin was an auspicious mythical beast, and the Qilin Heavenly Fire could turn all sorts of evil into ash. Although the Ink Scaled King’s flames were not the pure Qilin Heavenly Fire, it still contained its strength. The dead aura condensed by the dead spirit seemed to finally have met its nemesis and half of it was burnt off by the ink-black flames.
“Thousand-type Battle Spirit!”
Tens of thousands of light rays erupted from the Qilin halberd that the Ink Scaled King was holding, and every single one of them roared at the grey-robed dead spirit.
Rumble!
Although half of the dead aura had been burned by the Ink Scaled flames, and the grey-robed dead spirit’s offensive strength had been weakened considerably, the dead spirit was just too strong. As per usual, it sent Ink Scaled flying with a single swing of its blade.
No matter how strong the Ink Scaled King’s defense, the armor of scales on his body was shattered by that one blade. It was difficult to discern his flesh from his blood, and his gold-black blood seemed to flow like rain, dripping onto the ground. In a split second, rocks and trees alike were corroded and shot up in flames. Qilin blood was a thing of ultimate Yang. Legend had it that a drop of blood of the Fire Qilin of the ancient times was enough to evaporate an entire ocean.
The Ink Scaled King was sent hurtling through the air, and he no longer had the strength to defend himself. The grey-robed figure chased after him all the same. Just one blow was all it took for the Ink Scaled King—one of the famous three Great Kings—to be sent to the edge of death.
It was a good thing the Jade Xiu King managed to arrive in time. Rings of white light were released to envelop the grey-robed dead spirit.
“Reckless fool!” the grey-robed figure huffed coldly. The aura coming off of its body inflated abruptly, increasing and increasing in size. All of a sudden, its cultivation rose by a great deal.
Earlier, when it had just been facing the Ink Scaled King, his cultivation had been oppressed to remain at the lowest state. Now that there was an additional person, his cultivation could instantly increase twofold.
This was also why Mo Wen and the Multicolor Queen did not rush out recklessly to his rescue. If they had joined the fray, the grey-robed dead spirit’s cultivation would immediately increase fourfold. This was unimaginable. Of the few of them, the Jade Xiu King was the strongest, so there was no one more suited than he was to help the Ink Scaled King.
The only thing was that the Jade Xiu King might be the strongest of them, but he suffered great injuries with just one blow from the terrifying grey-robed dead spirit. The rings of white light had been shattered in an instant.
After all, the grey-robed dead spirit’s current cultivation was twice as much as it had been when he had been dealing with just the Ink Scaled King.
It was a good thing the Jade Xiu King was only there to rescue the Ink Scaled King and was not involving himself in the fight against the grey-robed dead spirit. Just one blow was enough to send the Jade Xiu King into full retreat, dragging the Ink Scaled King with him as they left the perimeter of the Ninth Spirit Mountain in an instant.
As long as they could make it out of the perimeter, the gatekeeper could not chase after them to deal with them. He would have no choice but to cease all activities and sit back and do nothing
Snicker!
The Jade Xiu King dragged the Ink Scaled King, who seemed to be on the verge of death. Blood filled his mouth and his face was extremely pallid. Wisps of deathly grey aura that were thin as threads enveloped his body, and they seemed to have merged into his bloodstream. It all looked rather terrifying on the surface.
