Chapter 6299: The Complexity of Human Nature
With his Devourer Scepter, Jie Tian flitted toward Chu Feng while attacking the chains with his black aura. The chains didn’t shatter under his attack, but they began to corrode.
Long Zhuoyan quickly changed her hand seal to unleash stronger flames to melt the chains.
“What do you mean by this?”
Long Zhuoyan took Chu Feng over to Jie Tian’s side after breaking free of the chains. She was fearless despite knowing that Jie Tian’s scepter was a formidable treasure.
“Come with me, Chu Feng.”
Jie Tian released a black aura that enveloped Chu Feng and Long Zhuoyan. This black aura didn’t hurt them; it merely transported them at an incredible speed.
“What’s with this brat?” Long Zhuoyan glanced at Chu Feng with calm eyes.
She was confident that neither Jie Tianran nor Jie Tian could stop her if she made up her mind to leave right away. She was merely confused as to why Jie Tian was helping Chu Feng, for she had heard about their enmity.
Chu Feng was also confused as to why Jie Tian was helping him, but the latter’s earlier words suggested that it might have something to do with his aunt.
“What happened to my aunt?” Chu Feng asked.
Jie Tian didn’t answer the question. He continued rushing ahead, bringing Chu Feng into the forbidden land with his access token.
Chu Feng immediately understood what happened when he saw the collapsed on the ground. They were all familiar faces—Jie Shanxian, Jie Tiannian, and Daoist Starseizer.
Jie Shanxian was in a horrendous state, but Daoist Starseizer and Jie Tiannian were doing far worse.
Chu Feng felt as if a sharp knife had been stabbed into his heart.
“Is it Jie Tianran’s doing?” Chu Feng asked.
“Yes, I did it,” Jie Tianran’s voice boomed.
Chu Feng looked back and saw resplendent clouds swiftly heading in their direction. To be exact, these weren’t clouds like multiple layers of formidable spirit power protecting Jie Tianran.
“Jie Tianran, you harmed even your fellow brethren, senior, and daughter! How can you call yourself a human?!” Chu Feng angrily bellowed.
But Jie Tianran was unfazed. “Chu Feng, they landed in that plight because of you. You are the one who should be taking responsibility for this.”
A terrifying surge of spirit power descended from the sky upon Chu Feng and the others.
Boom!
Long Zhuoyan unleashed fearsome flames that clashed with the spirit power. The two energies intertwined and formed fiery clouds that swiftly enveloped everything but Chu Feng’s group.
Long Zhuoyan glanced at Chu Feng and said, “We should get going.”
She enveloped Jie Shanxian, Jie Tiannian, and Daoist Starseizer with her spirit power.
“Take him with us too.” Chu Feng gestured toward Jie Tian.
Long Zhuoyan extended her spirit power to Jie Tian too, but the latter channeled his black aura to stop her.
“I won’t leave with you,” Jie Tian replied.
“Are you tired of living? If he has no qualms about doing this to your mother, he won’t hesitate to do the same to you too,” Chu Feng said.
“I am my mother’s son; I cannot turn a blind eye to her plight. But my grandfather was the one who taught me everything I know. I cannot betray him. I, Jie Tian, will live and die as a member of the Seven Realms Sacred Mansion!”
Jie Tian walked up to Jie Tiannian and kneeled on the ground. “Mother, I don’t think I can repay you for giving birth to me anymore. If there is a next life, I will serve you like an ox to repay this debt.”
Jie Tiannian was so weak that she couldn’t even speak. She looked at her kneeling son and took in his disfigured face and his cracked soul. Two streams of warm tears flowed down her cheeks.
Shoosh!
Chu Feng’s surroundings suddenly retreated. Long Zhuoyan was taking him away with her.
“He’s channeling that scepter with his life force. He won’t survive even if that old thing spares his life,” Long Zhuoyan said.
Chu Feng felt uncomfortable. He had always viewed Jie Tian as an unscrupulous person, just like Jie Tianran. Were it not for today’s events, he would have never known that Jie Tian could put his life on the line to defy the grandfather he respected so much to save his mother.
Human nature was truly complex.
The flames around Long Zhuoyan had faded, replaced by a thin layer of spirit power that could breach any formation.
Jie Tianran didn’t pursue them; Instead, he retracted his spirit power before descending to Jie Tian’s side. His face was ghastly pale, suggesting that he had paid a hefty price for his earlier burst of power.
“You have acted foolishly, Tian’er.” Jie Tianran’s wrathful eyes were surprisingly devoid of killing intent.
Remaining on his knees, Jie Tian kowtowed vehemently to Jie Tianran. “I have let down grandfather’s expectations in me. Please punish me for my actions.”
What happened next shocked Jie Tian.
Jie Tianran pulled him up and handed him a black pill.
“What are you waiting for? Eat it!” Jie Tianran stuffed the pill into Jie Tian’s mouth. “It’s a relief that the Devourer Emperor was prepared for this situation. This pill can alleviate the Devourer Scepter’s backlash and save your life. Otherwise, even I can’t save your life.
“Tian’er, how can you be so foolish as to risk your life to go against me? I gave you that scepter for self-protection, not to seek death!”
The Devourer Scepter’s backlash shouldn’t have cost Jie Tian’s life. He landed in this plight because he desperately channeled the Devourer Scepter to attain more power to oppose Jie Tianran. Needless to say, that worsened his backlash.
“Grandfather, w-why are you saving me?” Jie Tian looked at Jie Tianran in confusion.
His body was still gradually weakening, but the pill he had just taken had transformed into a surge of energy that kept him together. He might have a chance of surviving this ordeal at this rate.
“You’re my grandson. How can I leave you in the lurch?” Jie Tianran replied.
Jie Tian was taken aback. There were words he wanted to say but struggled to vocalize.
Jie Tianran saw through Jie Tian’s thoughts. “You’re confused why I am saving you despite having no qualms about killing your mother. Did you think I truly intended to kill your mother?
“I’m merely disappointed in her for siding with an outsider, and I thought this was a chance for you to temper your character. It’d suffice as long as you can harden your heart to be vicious when the situation calls for it. I would have stopped you if you made a move. No matter what, she’s still my daughter.
“Your mother’s afflicted with a gu that only I can lift. Now that Chu Feng has taken her, I fear that she won’t be able to survive anymore.”
Jie Tianran let out a worried sigh.
Jie Tian was stunned. He realized that he had committed a grievous mistake and regretted his actions.
