"You are a nice and polite lady compared to your friend but as you know how the society works, these are not the only qualities parents are looking for in their son's prospective wife. Whether or not the two families social status matches is the most important thing and I am sure you don't need me to tell you whether your social status and that of my son matched right?" Mrs Darwin asked. Although she did not raise her voice at Catherine, Mrs Darwin's words cut deep into Catherine's delicate heart.
"You don't need me to tell you that you are not good enough for my son, I am sure you are already aware of this fact since you are a very smart woman," Mrs Darwin said sounding as though she was some angelic being when the truth is that her words were aimed at the poor young lady to mock her.
"Although you are Jeffrey's mum you are in no position to tell me whether or not I am good enough for him. Although our family status is far apart, Frey doesn't give a damn about that. He loves me and I love him too, that is all that matters...,"
"Love?" Mrs Darwin chuckled.
"What is love? What can love do for him? Can it give my son the wealth and influence he needs to function in society? Can love uplifts his status? Mrs Darwin asked, her pitch rising higher as she talks.
"Instead of love, what Jeffrey needs is a woman with a status that matches with his. A woman who will be able to offer him the needed assistance when trouble arises. He doesn't need a cheap love that can't do anything to save him in times of trouble," Mrs Darwin said harshly not caring about how hurtful her words made Catherine feel.
Although she was hurt by the elderly woman's word she did not give Mrs Darwin the pleasure to see her hurtful expression. She masked her pains better than she has ever done.
"You might be Frey's mother but you have no right to call my love for him cheap. I love him in a way no other woman would ever be able to love him...,"
"Then prove it. If you promise to leave him then I will believe in your words," Mrs Darwin said in a provocative tone.
"I love him and I don't have to prove anything to you, Madam," Catherine said before she left the room. Throughout the rest of the dinner, she pretended that everything was cool and Mrs Darwin, didn't dare to make her displeasure visible because of her son and husband who adores Catherine.
.....
"How could she say such words to you? Who does she thinks she is to judge whether my beloved best friend is good enough or not?" Jasmine anger intensifies after hearing the entire story.
"Instead of saying you are not good enough for her son, I think it is her son and her entire family who are not good enough for you," Jasmine said in annoyance.
"Why are you getting so angry when you are not the one she said those words to you," Catherine said as she took a closer look at Jasmine. She was surprised to see that she was all dressed up like she wanted to go to an important place.
"You are my best friend. Anyone who insults you is equivalent to insulting me. How dare she looks down on my darling Cat just because her family is a little wealthy....,"
"You call Darwin's wealth being a little wealthy? Are you kidding me or are you saying this to make me feel a little better?" Catherine said as she forced on a smile.
"Compared to their wealth you are worth more than that. To me you are priceless. She will never be able to find a daughter-in-law as good as you. I can assure you of that," Jasmine said as she placed her hand on Catherine's shoulders.
"How I wish you are always this way each time Jack's mum tries to talk you down. I am sure fear wouldn't have allowed her to dare to confront you if you had shown her what the real Jasmine Avans is made up of," Catherine said in a meek tone.
"We best friends are similar in that aspect. It's a fact that we love our men to a fault. We won't dare to do anything that will hurt them...,"
"And I guess that is what makes us unique," Catherine said as she smiled at Jasmine.
The two best friends continue talking until it was 9:00 pm.
"So what are you planning to do now? Are you going to do as his mum wants or will you fight for your happiness?" Jasmine asked in a serious tone.
"If it was up to me, I would say that you should fight for your happiness but I will support whatever you choose. If you choose to stay with Pretty Boy then I will give you my full support. I won't let anyone intimidate or hurt you even though that person is his mum," Jasmine said fiercely.
Having someone that she knows will always get her back at every stage of life made Catherine feel a sense of warmth.
"I am lost at what to do right now. I am confused but I will definitely tell you if I have come up with an option," Catherine said as she examines Jasmine again with her eyes.
"You look all dressed up, are you going somewhere? Did Jackson finally call and ask you out on a date?" Catherine asked the question that has been on her mind since she noticed how fully dressed her best friend was.
Jasmine knew that Catherine will find her suspicious if she said no so she decided to lie.
"Yeah, he asked me out some minutes before you arrived," Jasmine lied while staring into Catherine's eyes. The mistake she made was staring at Catherine while telling such lies.
"Jackson asked you out and you don't look happy...,"
"Aren't you going back? Pretty Boy will get very worried and suspicious if you don't go back," Jasmine prevented Catherine from prying into her issue.
