Zhao Lifei soon reached home. Her stomach growled in anticipation when she caught a whiff of the delicious scent in the air. She breathed in deeply and waltzed straight into the dining room where a wide array of plates were set out before her. She took a secret bite of the food and nearly dropped it when a frosty voice sniped, "You’re late."
She turned around and was met with a thin-lipped, fire-breathing dragon with burning eyes. His flawless profile, resembling a fine piece of art, was twisted into a disgruntled expression. Upon seeing the food in her mouth, he added, "How’s the food?"
"Oh, it’s delicious—"
"It’s cold." He snapped, like an angry housewife.
Zhao Lifei blinked. She turned to look at the food and could see the tiny puffs of air that indicated warmth. She chewed the food in her mouth and swallowed. "Really? It’s perfectly fine for me." She said, not understanding why he was so angry.
"I slaved away in the kitchen and you come home late, wasting all of my hard work."
Zhao Lifei paused. Why did she feel like a husband who always came home late without notifying his housewife? It was as if she strolled through the door, briefcase in hand, while the other loosened her tie.
"I’m sorry...?" She confusedly said, placing her coat down and wandering to him. She stood in front of him, waiting for him to do something. When his icy eyes landed upon her, it became frostier. She sighed at her temperamental lover. "I just saw your text. My relatives were blowing up my phone, so I had it on silent." She wrapped her arms around him, a loose grin on her face.
"Did you miss me that much, wifey?" She teased, reaching up to pinch his nose but he roughly grabbed her fingers.
"Wifey?" He seethed, the temperature around them dropping.
"Yes, you behave like one." She grabbed the hand holding her fingers hostage. "It hurts."
He released them without a second thought. "Maybe you can use the cold food as an ice pack." He pettily responded.
Zhao Lifei resisted the urge to roll her eyes at him. Such a drama queen he was. "How can I make it up to you then?" She scoffed, turning back to the food and ready to saunter off when suddenly, an arm wrapped around her waist, yanking her into his chest.
He buried his head into the comfortable spot where her shoulder met her neck. His other arm came around to hug her shoulders, holding her tightly.
Zhao Lifei wondered if man-periods were a thing. If it is, he definitely had it with how fast his mood changed. One minute he was scolding her for the cold food and the next he was demanding cuddles. She held her complaint inside and decided to stay still while he breathed her in deeply.
"Come home early next time." He mumbled into her smooth skin, pressing a kiss on the spot and nuzzling her head.
He always felt at ease when she was present. Her euphoric scent was his calming pill and only when she was locked in his embrace did he feel reassured. He loved hugging her, enjoying the way her soft body molded against his. He never thought he would ever love skinship until he met her. Perfect in every way, even if she did not see that in herself. That was fine with him. He would thoroughly show her how flawless she was.
"You rarely come home on a set time. If you tell me one, I will come home before then." She responded, her hands resting on the one that was wrapped around her waist. He caught her fingers and entwined them, resting it on her hips.
Yang Feng debated a suitable time. She began work in the early morning and lately, it was the same schedule as his. "Six."
"Only six? Are you sure your workaholic behavior can handle that?" She joked, her eyes flickering to the food. If they didn’t eat it now, it would truly become cold. Her stomach made its presence known by performing the loudest whale mating call known to man. Her face flushed all shades of red, spreading to her neck.
"Pft." Yang Feng laughed against her skin, his chest rumbling behind her back.
Zhao Lifei could feel her stomach flutter at the throaty and warm sound. So lovely, so tender... She decided his laughter would be her favorite symphony. "My hunger is not funny."
"It sure isn’t." His lips morphed into a happy grin. With his arms still around her, he waddled their body, like a penguin, towards the table. "And for the record, I am not a workaholic."
Zhao Lifei snorted. "Yeah, and I’m a beaver." She sarcastically remarked, lightly patting his hand as a way of telling him to release her.
The food looked heavenly and tonight’s theme seemed to be French food. There was mouthwatering onion soup with fire-broiled cheese and beef served with toasted garlic bread, flamiche with cheese and vegetables, beef bourguignon, and so much more. If every night’s cooking was as appetizing as this, she was sure she would never come home late again.
"Whatever you say." Yang Feng nonchalantly replied, the corner of his lips quipped in a slight smirk. She was awestruck by his cooking and the more she ogled at it, the more she stroked his enormous ego. He pulled out a chair for her. She sat down and he stole the butler’s job by pushing her in. He bent down, pecked her on the cheek and sat down across from her.
"I want a rice bowl." Zhao Lifei said to a passing maid who readily nodded her head.
"Yes, ma’am."
Yang Feng chuckled. "Rice with French food?"
"You can never go wrong with rice." She teased, picking up her bamboo chopsticks. She enjoyed the carving of it and the small painting towards the top. It depicted a scenic crystal-blue lake that reflected the mountains and sun behind it.
"You would make your ancestors proud." Yang Feng jokingly remarked, watching as she picked up the flamiche with a chopstick and took a happy bite of it. Then she went to the appetizer salad consisting of kale, nuts, and chopped fruit.
"I already do." She happily replied whilst enjoying her food without a second thought. In contrary to his petty words, all of the dishes were still hot. None of them were cold. Everything there was seasoned and cooked to perfection, especially the garlic-butter and rosemary scallops. She wondered how it was humanly possible to harbor so many skills at once. Her eyes trailed to the well-mannered gentleman in front of her. Even when he ate, he looked poised and graceful but eluded a heavy aura of masculinity.
Zhao Lifei was too busy eyeing the snack in front of her to realize the maid had fetched her a bowl of rice. It was not until Yang Feng lifted his head that she immediately averted her eyes as if she was caught watching something very naughty. And with the way she was previously staring at him, it might as well have been.
