Chapter 1974
On the Scene.
“Secretary!”
“Secretary Dong!”
“You’ve finally arrived, please take a look!”
“These people did this, they’re utterly lawless!”
“They told us to leave, even attacked our people, and even tried to steal cultural relics!”
“Under the bright daylight, where’s the justice? They’re bullying us far too much! They keep saying it’s their county’s territory, but this belongs to us in Jiaolin County!”
The people from Jiaolin County had finally found their backbone, voicing out one after another. There weren’t many of them on-site earlier, facing a group of ten police officers from Yanbei County, and even some with guns, they felt somewhat outmatched. However, their confidence grew with Secretary Dong’s arrival, though it was just an additional person. In their eyes, Secretary Dong alone was worth a hundred people! Who was Secretary Dong? What kind of strength did he possess? Even other counties might not know the situation, but they certainly did.
The police officers from Yanbei County also looked at Secretary Dong with some furrowed brows. Their hasty actions—hustling people and smashing things—were to get a quick resolution, avoiding the arrival of leaders. That way, there wouldn’t be a standoff. But who would have thought that so soon, the leadership from Jiaolin County had arrived—a head of the county.
Now, it was impossible to back down. But the matter still needed to be addressed. The leaders from Yanbei County were also on their way.
The leading police officer from Yanbei County, taking a moment to gather himself, walked up, saying, “Are you Secretary Dong from Jiaolin County? Nice to meet you. I’m Sun Chenggong from the Yanbei County Police Department.”
But Secretary Dong didn’t even acknowledge him, scanning the scene with a quiet expression. He already knew from Jiaolin County that the news of a possible Han Dynasty emperor’s tomb on Qingluan Mountain had leaked to Yanbei County, prompting their eagerness to seize it. Their intentions were not good. It was precisely as Village Chief Xiao Cheng had feared—Yanbei County acted quickly, sending people today.
“Secretary.” The shaken officer from Jiaolin County got up from the ground.
Secretary Dong reached out a hand to help him, brushing the dirt from his clothes. “Did you get hurt?”
“No, no, I’m fine. Just a little fall,” the officer responded, flabbergasted by Secretary Dong’s attention. How did he get to be treated this way?
Secretary Dong looked back, his tone implying a question, “You attacked my people?”
Sun Chenggong retorted, “We didn’t touch him. He was obstructing us from performing our duty—protecting our county’s tomb.”
“Our things and tent. You’re the ones who smashed them!” Secretary Dong pointed to the chaotic mess on the ground.
Sun Chenggong brazenly defended himself: “They didn’t have our county’s permission. This is illegal construction. We’re dismantling it according to protocol, stopping them from damaging our county’s cultural assets.”
“It’s your county’s?” Secretary Dong moved closer.
Sun Chenggong maintained eye contact, “Yes, it is.”
Secretary Dong nodded, “Show me your work permits.”
Sun Chenggong smiled slightly, patting his chest as if searching, but then his expression changed as he realized something, patting around some more, finding nothing. “Xiao Zhou, do you have them?”
One of the others checked his wallet, exclaiming, “Hey, where’s my police ID?”
Sun Chenggong’s face darkened, “Xiao Wang, Xiao Li.”
Hearing this, everyone hastily began to reach for their ID cards, but upon searching their pockets, all were left staring in disbelief. Not a single one of them had their identification.
Sun Chenggong’s face changed drastically. How could this be? Who could have stolen their IDs? How could all of them be missing at once?
“This must be Dong Xuebing’s doing. He must’ve planned to grab something back quietly, without anyone knowing. Dong Xuebing’s been at this for a long time; it’s not the first time he’s done something like this,” Sun Chenggong said, trying to hold his composure.
“Where’s your ID? What’s wrong? Did you forget to bring it?” Dong Xuebing retorted.
“Maybe it got lost on the way,” Sun Chenggong replied, unhappy.
“How can we prove you’re a police officer if you don’t even have your ID?” Dong Xuebing asked pointedly.
“Is there any doubt?” Sun Chenggong’s frustration was evident. “Our county leaders are on their way here, too. When they arrive, everything will be clear. Now, please, take your people away. We’re taking control here.”
Dong Xuebing smiled, then suddenly kicked out. This time, he didn’t use his usual move of kicking someone in the gut; he tried something new. He swiftly lifted his leg and kicked Sun Chenggong squarely in the face.
Sun Chenggong didn’t even have time to react before he let out a blood-curdling scream, his mouth spitting out bloodied teeth as he was sent flying to the ground with a hard thud.
“Ah!”
“Team Leader Sun!”
“Team Leader Sun!”
A police officer from Yanbei County rushed over to help Sun Chenggong, but the next moment, Dong Xuebin kicked out again, landing a solid boot on the officer’s face.
“Ah!” Another one was sent flying.
Dong Xuebing was truly furious this time, showing no mercy.
The people from Jiaolin County were dumbfounded. A Cultural Bureau official hurriedly said, “Secretary Dong, stay calm!”
But Dong Xuebing retorted, “Calm my ass! A bunch of tomb robbers dressed up as police, and you’re all scared stiff!”
In the meantime, two police officers from Yanbei County were infuriated. They hadn’t expected the county’s Party Secretary to dare hit them. They charged forward in a fit of anger, not even stopping to consider that it wasn’t right for them to be the only ones allowed to assault others or damage things.
Dong Xuebing sneered. How could these people be his match? He grabbed the one who had smashed their tent and kneed him in the face. With a quick swipe of his elbow, he also hit another officer trying to sneak an attack, knocking him out cold without a sound.
“Take him on!”
“You dare hit us? You’re hitting people!”
The people from Yanbei County roared in anger.
Seeing this, the remaining police officers from Jiaolin County also charged up. “Follow Secretary Dong’s orders! Take down those criminals! Don’t let them steal national property!”
Lying on the ground, Sun Chenggong barely managed to spit out another mouthful of blood. “Who the hell are the criminals?”
The people from Jiaolin County weren’t fools either; they all knew these guys were real police officers. But it didn’t matter that they lacked IDs; they were targeted because of it.
Dong Xuebing kicked one after another.
The people from Jiaolin County also joined the fray.
Even a few of the more hot-blooded young officers from the Cultural Bureau in Jiaolin County took advantage of the confusion, catching a few of the soft targets Dong Xuebing had beaten, and gave them a few more kicks. “Let’s see you try to smash our things! Smash them! This is the first time I’ve seen tomb robbers this bold!”
