Seven Sins System Chapter 386. Dramatic Show I
The sound of footsteps echoed through the empty hallway. It seemed to pound against the silence, growing louder.
We all knew the drill by now—the daily "meal" delivery, right on time, like clockwork. It wasn't much, just the bare minimum to keep us alive. A stale chunk of bread, a cup of water. Enough to remind us that we were prisoners, not corpses.
The footsteps started down the hallway. Then—just as expected—they stopped. Right outside our cell.
Puriel and I exchanged glances. Show time.
The metallic 'click' of the lock disengaging sounded. The door creaked open, just enough for the silhouette of our captor to appear, cloaked in dim hallway light. No words, no acknowledgment—just a silent drop-off. The tray slid through the small gap at the bottom of the door.
Bread. Water. Again.
I stared at it. I could already feel the dry, choking sensation it would leave in my throat. It didn't matter. We weren't eating yet. We had a plan.
Puriel nodded at me, the signal.
She crawled toward me, slow and exaggerated, as if every movement was agony. I was already on the floor, playing dead—well, playing almost dead. Weak, broken, just hanging on by a thread. She leaned over me, placing a trembling hand on my chest, her voice soft, desperate. "Allen… just hold on, okay?"
Loud enough for our captor to hear.
I let out a weak, shuddering breath. "I… don't think… I can last much longer, Aria…" My voice cracked just right. A rough cough punctuated my words. Perfect.
I could feel Puriel resisting the urge to roll her eyes. But she stayed in character.
"My mana's completely gone," I continued, my voice barely above a whisper. "I can't keep fighting it… The Lord of Wrath's curse—it's spreading."
Puriel's head snapped toward me, her expression shifting from fake concern to real frustration. "What the hell are you talking about? A curse?" she hissed under her breath. "You never mentioned a curse before."
I kept my voice low. "Just go with it."
Her eyes narrowed, and for a second, I thought she might actually punch me. But then she exhaled sharply, turning her gaze back to the door.
She took a deep breath and, with the skill of a seasoned actress, put on her best heartbroken expression.
"Oh, yeah… the curse." Her voice trembled, barely holding back imaginary tears. "The Lord of Wrath is so evil. I can't believe he cursed you like this."
I nearly broke character.
She was really laying it on thick.
She sniffled dramatically. "You should've known better than to make a deal with a devil, Allen! Devils always ask for something in return! You were too greedy."
I blinked at her, struggling to keep up the act. "I… I didn't have a choice," I croaked. "I needed power." I winced, clutching my side like I was in unbearable pain. "It was a gamble… and I lost."
Puriel let out a dramatic sigh, shaking her head. "Unbelievable."
I fought the urge to glare at her. "You're really enjoying this, aren't you?" I whispered.
She smirked. "Oh, immensely."
But she quickly snapped back to her act, turning toward the door with big, watery eyes. "Please! Someone—help him!"
There was a beat of silence.
No movement from the door.
I gritted my teeth. Our captor wasn't buying it.
"He gave me what I wanted, Aria," I groaned, voice laced with regret. "The power I dreamed of… I don't blame him." I coughed, shaking slightly. "But the curse… it's killing me…"
Puriel gave me an exasperated look. "You don't blame him but you're suffering because of it? Do you even hear yourself? That sounds so stupid."
"Just roll with it," I whispered.
She pinched the bridge of her nose. "They're gonna see right through you."
I forced a weak chuckle. "Nah… they'll believe me."
Puriel sighed, clearly still thinking this was the dumbest idea ever. "How exactly?"
I turned my head, looking at her with the most pitiful, exhausted expression I could muster. "I'm starving. I'm dehydrated. People hallucinate when they're like this. If I start mumbling crazy stuff, maybe they'll take me seriously."
