Chapter 1390: Troubled

Laufey was completely baffled by this new lord, whose age was similar to his. Luke's playful nature didn't look like that of a lord. However, his view didn't seem to be like a youngster.

He wanted to prove that Luke was the same as his father, incapable of doing anything. No, he might even ruin the entire family in his generation.

That was why Laufey decided to apply when the Ardagan family wanted to hire some new workers.

But that was when his life took a turn for the better. Luke was a genius. He might not be a powerful guy. No, in fact, Luke didn't have any talents in getting a spirit. Even when he was forced to train in swords, he didn't have any intention of doing it.

However, his academic skill was something that his mentor couldn't help but fear.

Laufey witnessed everything. Luke actually rebuilt their city. More importantly, he was just 14 years old at that time.

By the time he was 16 years old, he restored the territory.

By the time he was 21 years old, people had hailed him to be the greatest merchant in the kingdom. It only took him another four years to actually become the wealthiest person in the kingdom.

Laufey was in utter shock. In just over a decade, Luke had turned the Ardagan family, who were among the very bottom, the impoverished city, to the very top.

However, there was something he once learned when Luke was only 18 years old. Before he was known to be the greatest merchant in the kingdom, Luke had already seen his own doom.

"Luke?!" Laufey squinted his eyes. It wasn't that often for Luke to look troubled in his office.

"Oh, Laufey." Luke raised his eyebrows. "Is there anything wrong?"

"I should be the one asking you that question. You don't look so good." Laufey entered the room and carefully closed the door.

Luke smiled wryly. "Does it look that way?"

"Yes." Laufey glanced at the chair. "If you don't want to tell me, I will go back."

Luke chuckled. "Your bad habit is showing again. You definitely want to know about it. That's why you glance at the chair, but you are saying such a contradictory thing. Just sit down if you want to know."

"…" Laufey ultimately shook his head. "Never mind."

"Just sit down!" Luke sighed.

"…" Laufey fell silent before reaching for his seat.

Luke asked, "I guess I can't change fate."

"What do you mean? Fate? This is not like you. You're not someone who would rely on fate." Laufey became even more confused. This was the first time he saw Luke was so vulnerable.

Luke pinched the bridge of his nose. "The marriage between me and Leysha has been decided, right?"

"Yes."

"In the end, I will get an heir, right?"

"Why are you talking about such an obvious thing? You need someone to inherit your position."

Luke smiled wryly. "And that's the problem. The Ardagan family is one of the oldest families in the world. We've been here since the kingdom's creation.

"There are a lot of texts left behind by my ancestors, saying the same thing. The demon king will return."

"Demon king?!" Laufey looked shocked. This was the first time he heard about it.

"Yeah. I'm assuming that the demon king who was supposed to be slain by my ancestor would be resurrected. I don't know when, but it shouldn't be far in the future."

"What do you mean?"

"Now that I think about it, you were already aware of me killing my own father to seize this seat at our first meeting, were you?"

"Indeed. That's why I thought you would be the same as your father and ruin this family. Not that I care… but I guess I was wrong." Laufey nodded.

"The reason I killed him was because the woman who bewitched my father was actually a person of the Supreme Devil Organization."

"Supreme Devil Organization? Do you mean the notorious Supreme Devil Organization, who is to be killed on sight?" Laufey dropped his jaw, not expecting Luke to mention such a big name.

"Yes. From all the records left behind, it's clear that only my father had to face such a temptation. In other words, the Supreme Devil Organization launched such an attack, fully aware of our history."

"But if I'm not wrong, that organization was only built…" Laufey fell silent.

"I know. They were created 20 years ago by that mad king. He used them like a hunting dog, but that dog had bitten its owner's hand." Laufey squinted his eyes. "From the record of my ancestor, the Ardagan family shouldn't really have any grudge with the Supreme Devil Organization.

"Hence, there must be something behind it. The only possible explanation I can find so far…"

"…is the demon king's revival!" Laufey's expression turned grim.

"Yes. The question is when?! To hit my father like that, I thought it would be in my father's generation. But it doesn't seem that way.

"Right now, I'm trying to decimate them, but it doesn't seem I will succeed in my generation. Most likely…"

"Don't tell me. Your child will have to bear this burden?" Laufey's body shook.

Luke gritted his teeth. He was furious at himself for not having the capability of ending everything in his generation.

"Then can't you just do it? You are the brightest guy I have ever seen…"

Luke shook his head. "Because of the Supreme Devil Organization, the family had ruined its foundation. To revive the family to this extent, I had to utilize everything to the very last drop, even if it meant not being sustainable."

"Don't tell me…"

"Yeah. In less than a decade, there would be nothing more I could utilize. Well, I can probably utilize all the remaining resources to last for another decade, but I'm afraid that will be the end of it.

"Without enough resources, there's no chance to fight against the demon king." Luke clenched his fists. "Damn it! Why can't I be the one to do it?"

"Why are you so sure you can't do it? I mean, you should be able to cripple them, no?" Laufey asked.

"No." Luke shook his head. "There is one big reason for this. Even if I stop them in my generation, they will wait for another opportunity to revive the demon king. This is the closest we have to bringing down the demon king once and for all, but unfortunately, it's not going to be me.

"Yet… I'm not the chosen one. Ardagan… didn't choose me."
