So much for not being seen by anyone.
Rex tried to be meticulous, using the System’s scanning feature multiple times to make sure there was nobody around to see him. Since at this point, the Arcalen House’s destruction was already known, all thanks to Princess Davina, who somehow stumbled upon this place, there might be people nearby tasked to solve the perpetrator.
It was likely.
In fact, Rex was certain that there were going to be people here.
Seeing that the System picked not a single person around, Rex was ecstatic.
He could come and go without anyone noticing.
But he made a fatal mistake.
It’s true that I’m being careful, but I forgot to scan above me.
For the longest time, the System’s scanning feature has never failed him in any type of way.
Even when he was blinded by a powerful spell, the scanning feature worked fine, so it wasn’t wrong when it showed nobody around. It was completely Rex’s blunder—he forgot to tilt his head skyward to scan above.
And now, this woman managed to sneak behind him.
Judging from her spectacular gown, an artifact that exuded a powerful aura, along with the ornaments that adorned every inch of her skin, it was clear that this woman also had status. Another noble, and Rex recognized the crest on her necklace.
He had seen it back in Arbitgea.
Ravencort House, what is she doing here?
In the next second, however, he realized that this woman was the one chasing him and the others right after he flattened Dragna Land and Dragna Sea. She was the person who had an enormous Seeker Flare, capable of covering half a mile.
“Did you not hear what I said?” The woman repeated. “What are you doing here?”
Rex snapped his reverie and offered a polite smile.
“Excuse my impoliteness, I’m a walker from Arbitgea,” Rex introduced, bowing slightly as he said that, trying to act like a peasant who crossed a noble. “I heard Dragna Land and Dragna Sea were destroyed, and I thought I’d try my luck.”
“A walker…” The woman’s eyes narrowed. “Look into my eyes.”
Suddenly, her eyes gleamed with a purple hue, catching Rex completely off guard.
<Notice: the Eye of Truth has taken effect on the user!>
<Puppeteer Resistance passive skill has blocked the effect completely!>
<Notice: the user has been freed from the effect.>
Reading the notifications that appeared out of nowhere, Rex was troubled, but his face remained calm.
It seemed the woman tried to force the truth out of his mouth.
Fortunately, thanks to Chorus-bearers—he devoured, or rather, the Invincible Apparition devoured, he was able to render the woman’s eyes useless. Locking eyes with the woman, Rex frowned. Did she realize that her eyes didn’t work on me?
Rex inspected the woman’s expression and found that she wasn’t aware that her eyes didn’t work.
He could play along and get her off his back.
“Let me ask you again, what are you doing here?” The woman asked for the third time.
Pausing for a second, Rex formed the answer in his mind before he finally opened his mouth, “I wanted to see if there are any valuables among the rubble to sell. Maybe something precious enough to aid my situation this year.”
Upon hearing this, the woman’s eyes returned to normal before she massaged her forehead.
It seemed she bought Rex’s answer.
She believed that Rex was telling the truth.
Rex blinked his eyes a couple of times, pretending to be confused as to what had happened to him.
“Do not worry, you’re okay,” The woman assured before she waved her hand. “You can go now.”
For a second there, Rex acted like he was confused before he shook his head, “Noble Lady, can you let me look around the rubble? I’m not asking for a long time. Just ten minutes to look around—and once it was up, I’ll immediately leave.”
“No. This place is under investigation.” The woman refused Rex’s request outright.
But Rex wasn’t going to stop like that.
“Please, Noble Lady. I need to bring home something, or else I’m going to be in trouble,” He pleaded.
Pivoting to look at Rex—the woman raised an eyebrow, “I sensed your aura earlier. You’re no doubt a Master Immortal Spirit. I do not think anyone in Arbitgea could pose a threat to you. Unless… you are lying to me.”
“How can I lie to you?” Rex smiled wryly. “Your eyes could see through any lies, I’m sure.”
“Hmm, you’re right,” The woman sighed before she turned around to leave. “Ten minutes. No more.”
Almost instantly, Rex bowed deeper, “Thank you for your generosity, Noble Lady!”
Once the woman walked away, Rex straightened his back and immediately went to Dragna Land.
He was lucky that acting desperate and pathetic worked him wonders, but he only had ten minutes—so he couldn’t waste a single second. Landing on top of a massive dragon’s skeleton, which seemed to be used as a foundation for homes, Rex looked down.
From this height, he could practically see the entire Dragna Land.
Earlier, he was planning on sweeping the entire place bit by bit just to be sure.
But that wasn’t an option now.
System, scan Dragna Land with the same filters as earlier. Find anything that could help me.
<Affirmative.>
<Scanning…>
Rex watched as the holographic blue light swept the entire land below him, enveloping every nook and corner to make sure that every single item was scanned. It would take a minute since there are a lot of items buried under the rubble.
As he waited, he noticed someone was standing beside him.
He didn’t need to look to know who it was.
“You should turn that woman, she might be of help,” The Invincible Apparition said.
His eyes were locked onto the purple-haired woman who was directing about a dozen people in a circle formation, seemingly undergoing a ritual. “No need to hesitate anymore. You already tried turning a lot of Voidal Knights, and you’re completely fine. All of them had no choice—but to follow you. Nothing bad happened.”
“Are you kidding?” Rex argued without turning to look. “Sure, I managed to control the Voidal Knights without much problem, but all of them are weaker than me. Their only problem was their killing intent towards me, animalistic, that’s it. But that woman…?”
Rex glanced at the purple-haired woman.
He didn’t even know her name because he didn’t want to suffer a backlash in case she was very strong.
“She’s a lot stronger than me,” He continued. “Did you not remember how big her Seeker Flare was? At the very least, she’s at the Eternal Spirit rank, one major rank higher than me. And for the record, I have never turned someone stronger than me.”
“Did you forget what I said?” The Invincible Apparition turned towards Rex.
For a second there, they locked their gazes.
Though small and young, the Invincible Apparition cracked a smile that’s scarier than Rex ever could.
“As long as she’s not a candidate for Invincibility, she’s nothing to us. We’ll be fine.” He added.
Upon hearing this, Rex massaged his forehead.
“Why would I need her for, anyway?” Rex finally asked.
Questioning like this meant he was deliberating about turning the purple-haired woman.
It was a step closer to an amicable relationship, and the Invincible Apparition isn’t going to waste this.
“You’re smart, but sometimes, you can be quite dumb.” The Invincible Apparition chuckled.
It was more of a mock than the actual truth.
Rex wasn’t dumb, but he was too fixated on doing everything alone that he ignored important things.
“That noblewoman is from House Ravencort, and Princess Davinna was helping them fend off Voidal Monsters while they fixed their land’s barrier. Arbitgea—and Ravencort House’ domain must be under her jurisdiction, so that woman must know more—about Princess Davina,” The Invincible Apparition explained.
Pushing aside the thought that he was talking to the worst side of him, Rex found this logical.
He’s going to need as much information as he can get about Princess Davina.
The Nameless Dragon Arena tournament has been a long-standing thing, and throughout its entire life, nobody has been able to become Princess Davina’s husband. I’m not arrogant enough to expect her to choose me, so there must be a reason why the candidates were rejected.
Maybe she has a specific preference that she wants for someone to be her husband.
Rex stared at the woman, now inclined to listen to do what the Invincible Apparition suggests.
In a way, winning Princess Davina’s heart might be a lot harder than beating the Singing Lady.
Mainly because this doesn’t rely on strength.
I need to take this seriously. If I didn’t get picked, it’s going to be a lot harder to visit the Sky City.
Once he had made his decision, he shook his head and chuckled to himself.
I can’t believe I’m actually listening to… whatever he is.
Shaking his head, Rex turned to the Invincible Apparition, “Even so, how do you expect me to turn her when she’s a lot stronger than me? First off, to turn someone, I need to brand them with a rune and then feed them my blood. Since she’s stronger, I reckoned it would take more blood to turn her.”
“You go first, what would be your plan?” The Invincible Apparition said.
Rex paused for a second, contemplating his approach.
Considering that he knew nothing about the purple-haired woman other than she’s strong—and also a Seeker, this would be tricky. Since brute force is not an option, he would need to resort to deception, a fluke that would lower the purple-haired woman’s guard.
Though he has limited resources here, he could rely on the fact that the woman saw him as a peasant.
Albeit a strong one at that.
“I’d approach her with an artifact I ‘supposedly’ found in hand, wanting to thank her for allowing me to have a look around,” Rex said, reciting the plan he thought of at the top of his head. “Then, once I’m close enough, I’d detonate the artifact to blow myself up. She’d probably come to check on me out of concern, and that’s when I’d brand her and shove my severed hand into her mouth.”
“What about when those people checked on you instead?” The Invincible Apparition asked.
“Hmm, in that case, I should make the blast strong enough to knock them all away,” Rex added.
It could work.
As long as the woman was the only one strong enough to endure the blast, she’d be the one to check.
“What about you? What’s your plan?” Rex asked.
He was curious as to what the Invincible Apparition had in store.
Pausing for a second to arrange the thoughts—in his mind, the Invincible Apparition then told Rex his own approach. Rex listened attentively, his brows dipping as seconds past, until finally he sucked in a cold breath.
If he had to describe the Invincible Apparition’s plan in one word, it would be ‘animalistic’.
“I know I have quite a high pain tolerance, but aren’t you pushing it?” Rex asked.
“Don’t be a pussy,” The Invincible Apparition laughed. “If you can’t, I’ll gladly do it for you.”
Rex could only shake his head.
Then, he finally came to a decision, “My plan would be plan A, while yours—would be plan B. I’m going to use my own approach first, but if things go wrong, I’m going to shift to your plan. How about it? Is it fair enough?”
“Suit yourself.” The Invincible Apparition replied and vanished from his spot.
Now that the plan was sorted, Rex turned his focus back on Dragna Land.
<Scanning complete!>
Once the scan was complete, dozens of windows appeared under him.
It was all the items that were buried under the rubble, but fitted the filters Rex has set for this scan.
Rex read them one by one, realizing that most of them were scrolls with unknown contents, some high-grade artifacts that were associated with the Arcalen House, heirlooms, and many more. He wanted to see all of them one by one, but time wasn’t on his side.
So, he decided to go down and store them all in the System first.
