The power of the distorted constellation began to fade. The power of stars that had subtly permeated Tionis—brought down along with the meteor—was now gradually dissipating. Yet, at the same time, the world itself began to tremble.

Davey knew this vibration was imperceptible to ordinary living beings.

‘Guess that means I’m no longer something that can be called human.’

Awakening high-tier divinity as a higher demigod wasn’t entirely a blessing.

He was constantly hearing that things should be done in a certain way, as if his brain was a rowdy town hall. Some of the voices were also saying that, since the world was moving in a specific direction, adjustments had to be made to follow suit—it was maddening.

It felt as if someone or something was whispering to him nonstop. The formless, soundless murmurs had no sense of time, bothering him constantly, enough to push him to the brink of insanity.

Davey decided to tap the elderly brain trust at the Hall of Heroes, desperate to silence the maddening dissonance. He first had to endure Odin’s relentless magic attacks before finally discovering a way to suppress his power and lower his levels temporarily.

The cacophony gradually subsided, and his senses returned to normal. He quietly exited the altar afterward.

At this point, it was clear—every servant and creation of the constellations must be ruthlessly put dow—

Thud.

"Hm?"

Looking down, Davey saw a star servant clinging stubbornly to his leg, his glowing red eyes blazing with determination.

There was still a surviving servant, desperately hanging on to dear life—literally.

"S-Spare me..."

The bloodied figure, barely able to keep his grip, pleaded in a voice trembling with fear.

"I… I don’t want to die..."

It appeared that a constellation’s dissolution didn't equate to instant death for its underlings. The lingering evidence of such a fact clung to life desperately with its groveling.

Davey figured this creature had once been an ordinary human of Tionis, likely chosen for having a body suitable to receive the power of the Zodiac constellation Cancer.

For an ordinary person to gain such overwhelming strength as a servant—practically a cheat—would certainly create massive ripples of concern.

Once someone became the servant of a constellation, there was no turning back.

If that were all, it might not have been a problem; after all, with Cancer destroyed, those receiving its power had dwindled drastically.

But still...

"My... little sister... back home..."

Whatever circumstances and hope had driven this man to such lengths, it no longer mattered—his condition was far beyond anything that could be called human. Even if spared, his body would soon succumb to necrosis, disappearing entirely from his once-familiar world.

Ssss…

The servant collapsed, his lifeless body crumpling to the ground. Davey turned away and prepared to head toward where Evangeline was. He waved his finger in the air.

Along with a sharp tearing sound, space itself was ripped apart as an opening appeared before him. He stepped through it without hesitation.

All that was left behind was complete annihilation and ruins, devoid of life.

* * *

“Why... Why?! My power...”

One of Cancer’s star servants faltered while making a confused face as it realized with horror that its almighty master's supreme power had vanished, leaving it alone with Evangeline. It should’ve been able to exploit her already weakened mental state, bending her to its will. Yet, its power unfortunately refused to manifest.

‘If that’s the case…’

It had to eliminate her without controlling her. Its master had commanded that, if she could not be subdued, she must be removed by any means necessary to prevent her from wreaking havoc against them.

"Don’t blame me for this."

The creature raised its sword toward Evangeline, who sat crouched on the ground silently hugging her knees.

"This is all for the sake of the world."

Crack...

It swung its blade toward her with razor precision.

Crack...

‘Even if she’s the seed of the Dragon Asura capable of disrupting the balance of the world, she’s still just a sapling that hasn’t even sprouted!’

Just as the sword was about to strike her neck, Evangeline slowly lifted her head.

The servant momentarily hesitated upon seeing her tear-streaked face, trembling yet defiant. For a fleeting moment, it couldn't help but wonder what she was thinking. After staggering slightly, it shook off the hesitation and refocused its intent.

"Die!"

It steeled its resolve and brought the blade down like an executioner.

Crack!!! Crash!!

Evangeline, sensing her impending death, clasped her hands over her ears and lowered her head.

Then, just as the sword was about to strike her, the fabric of the isolated space around them tore open, and a faint breeze swept through.

Whoosh...

Thud!!!!

Before the sword could land, a figure moved before it in a blur. In an instant, they swung a crowbar like a baseball bat, striking the creature squarely in the abdomen.

A brief silence settled over the scene as the sword descending toward Evangeline was frozen in place. No, more precisely, everything seemed to fall silent as though time itself had stopped and the world stood still.

Crack.

Space had split apart as a rift appeared.

Boom!!

At the same time, a rippling shockwave erupted. The knight, struck by the crowbar before it could even react, was sent flying, tumbling across the ground dozens of times before finally coming to a stop.

“D-Daddy?”

Evangeline muttered softly as tears streamed down her face.

Standing before her was none other than Davey O’Rowane, her beloved father.

Davey turned slightly, mimicking the pose of someone shielding their eyes from the sun with one hand as though admiring a home run ball. He then turned to face Evangeline.

Seeing her sobbing on the floor, Davey quietly extended a hand toward her. Evangeline trembled in fear and lowered her head, avoiding his gaze. However, what she felt next defied her instincts.

A soft, gentle touch.

"Good... It looks like you’re not hurt."

Hearing his voice, Evangeline finally gave in to the exhaustion and collapsed into unconsciousness.

* * *

With the limp sleeping Evangeline in his arms, Davey gazed down at her with silent affection. Rinne soon approached, her soft yet deliberate steps breaking the silence.

In one hand, she had a golden spear, the Spear that Can Melt the Balance of the World. In the other, something resembling crab meat dangled limply.

“Rinne reports mission completion. Rinne evaluates this highly.”

"Good work."

Davey responded calmly, brushing a hand gently over Evangeline’s cheek.

Nom, nom.

“What are you eating…?”

Rinne then raised the crab meat she had been holding.

“Rinne analyzes this material as having significant culinary value. Rinne reports this subject’s categorization as a forest crab…”

‘A forest crab? That's a rare delicacy of a monster. How’d she manage to find one?’

They were known for their scarcity, and for being a particularly large and vicious creature—its size alone was often three to four times that of a human.

But what Rinne was holding was merely a small piece of its leg meat, seemingly steamed to perfection.

“Don’t tell me…”

Nom, nom, nom!

Rinne took a step back, nibbling furiously at the meat. Then, maintaining her usual expressionless face, she opened her small mouth wide and began voraciously devouring the meat with ferocity.

“Hey! Are you seriously eating all of that on your own?!”

Rinne bolted away, taking cover behind a distant boulder after putting plenty of distance between her and the would-be food thief. From there, she peeked out cautiously, still chewing.

"Rinne requests permission to begin preparations to take her back home with us.”

"No, I think we need to take this opportunity to let her throw a tantrum and process these feelings. Nip it in the bud..."

Rinne widened her eyes in response.

“By Rinne’s analysis, tolerating and succumbing to her willful childish rebellion isn't doing her any favors.”

"She's being a baby? Considering the circumstances, I think it's perfectly reasonable. I knew this day would come eventually, so I've already put plenty of thought into it.”

Davey made an expression mixed with bitterness, guilt, and affection.

* * *

Urgh...”

As Evangeline regained consciousness, she noticed something firm yet soft supporting her head. Slowly and with effort, she opened her eyes and saw the figure whose body had been acting as her pillow.

“Daddy?”

“Did you sleep well, Evangeline?”

His gentle smile radiated his usual kindness and reassurance, his voice full of warmth and affection. But it didn’t take long for her to widen her eyes in alarm and bolt upright.

Thud!!

She scrambled backward, stumbling away from Davey in a panic.

“Evangeline?”

“D-Don’t come any closer!”

“What?”

As he widened his eyes in surprise, she stared at him with wary eyes.

“W-What are you doing here, Daddy?”

“What kind of parent wouldn’t worry about their precious child?”

“Precious child...”

Evangeline muttered his words as if trying to grasp their meaning.

“Daddy.”

“Yes?”

“You’re really my daddy, right?”

At her question, Davey closed his eyes. He didn’t even have to think about this answer.

“Of course I am.”

“Then... Do you know anything about a being called Eclipse?”

The name made Davey clamp his lips shut.

“Eclipse?”

“Yes...”

Her gaze was unwavering, her voice earnest. Davey paused before answering.

“Well... I don’t know?”

“Liar!” she yelled sharply. “You do know! You’ve always known!”

“Evangeline—”

“I know all your little habits and tells when you lie! Mommy told me about them! Why are you lying to me? I didn’t want to hear lies from you! I just wanted hear the truth from you, Daddy!” she wailed.

His expression subtly shifted. She cried out as tears welled up in her eyes, unable to stop her lips from trembling.

“Liar! Liar! I hate you, Dad!!”

Her shouting made Davey freeze on the spot.

“I’m leaving! Don’t come looking for me!”

She bolted, disappearing into the distance. He remained motionless for a while, staring in the direction she had dashed. After a while, Rinne silently approached, poking him in the side.

“Master Davey.”

“Rinne... What should I do?”

His voice trembled.

“Evangeline... says she hates me.”

Rinne stared at him with narrowed eyes. For the usually composed Davey who always maintained composedness in any situation, it was unsettling to see him so troubled and obviously distraught.

“No! Evangeline! I’m sorry! Come back! Damn you, Eclipse! Even from the grave, you won’t stop causing me trouble?!”

But he felt like she wasn’t angry about the facts of her parentage, more at his deception.

As Davey prepared to dash after her, screaming, Rinne had no choice but to use every ounce of her power—even using her awakened strength—to restrain him.

* * *

‘Daddy lied! Daddy deceived me!’

Evangeline returned to the mercenary group with a face that practically screamed that she was upset.

“Evangeline?! Where have you been? Do you have any idea how worried we were when you just disappeared like that?”

The mercenaries, relieved to see her, let out exasperated sighs as they approached her with concern.

Luck had been on their side. They completed their missions without any significant setbacks, and their kidnapped mage compatriots had been rescued in time.

Of course, both Rinne and Davey had helped behind the scenes. However, neither the mercenaries, the scholars leading the expedition, nor the merchants had any idea.

They were able to help due to the large explosion that had occurred near where Evangeline had been. As far as the mercenaries were concerned, Evangeline was a blessing in disguise, and they laughed heartily as they celebrated her return.

But unlike the cheerful mercenaries, Evangeline was sulking, pouting her lips.

“Daddy... You’re the worst. You’re the one who said lying is bad… I really hate you.”

ChubbyCheeks & FriedNook's Thoughts

Editorb’s Thoughts

Tbh Davey shouldn’t really be taking his daughter saying she hates him to heart. When I was a kid I would get so unreasonably mad that I’d yell at my parents saying I hated them and wished they were dead. I told them that, as punishment for them upsetting me, I wouldn’t speak a single word to them for the following two days. I followed through and did that shit, too. Didn’t acknowledge their existence for almost three days 😂😭
