[The World of Illusions, Inside the Memory Trap of Damian, Current Time – Damian’s POV]
There was a strange dream he had seen — a dream where he was strong, like a superhero. There was a woman. A girl. An insanely beautiful girl.
She talked to him — or maybe he just wished she did and imagined it all.
There was something about the girl, though — first of all, she had blue hair.
No one in the world had blue hair.
Maybe she colored it somehow.
Wonder how many crayons it would take to make his hair blue..
**
That fat man was talking with Sister Hadley again.
He barely gave them ten dollars a month as a donation and still annoyed the Sister for hours over it.
It was clear why he was giving the money — he didn’t care for the orphanage or the kids.
He was clearly after their Sister Hadley.
He wouldn’t let that happen — never.
**
It happened again. The girl appeared beside him, saying the same thing..
She stayed for just a second, then disappeared.
She wasn’t alone this time. There were two more boys behind the bench he was on.
And then there was another thing..
A monster.
A black-skinned, red-eyed monster — it was taller than any man he knew. And scary.
Maybe he should talk to Sister Hadley about all these strangers, but she was..
Huh? Where was she?
**
Another nice day in the park. Other than that fat, stupidface man.
He should probably try to ignore him.
Sometimes, one just had to trust that others could handle themselves.
He looked around the bench and even behind it — trying to find the blue-haired girl and the pretty-looking boys who were always with her.
Those three.. felt strangely familiar.
Like he knew them very well — even though he had no idea what their names were.
He heard a voice before he saw her face:
“We need your help, Damian. Wake up!” she said.
Her face looked worried and scared.
For the few seconds that he could see the three people and the monster, he noticed the two boys trying their best to hit the dark monster with their hands. One of them was even glowing blue.
They were injured and bleeding.
He had only focused on the pretty girl’s face before, but now that he looked, she too was bleeding from many places on her body.
What was going on?
**
Suddenly, the things around him changed, and he found himself in a dark place.
It was a bed, he realized — under a bed.
He was hiding.
What? Wasn’t he in the park just a minute ago?
Someone was arguing loudly somewhere outside.
He dragged himself out from under the bed and stood up.
For a second, everything was still — afternoon sunlight was making the whole weird room brighter, the air smelled fresh.
Then suddenly, someone came out of thin air and crashed into a wooden table, breaking it into pieces.
It was one of the boys who stood with the pretty girl.
A second later, the other boy and the girl crashed into the stone walls too.
They were bleeding even more now.
Why were they fighting?
Didn’t they know it wasn’t a good thing to hit someone?
All his thoughts went blank, however, when he saw the monster that had hit them slowly walking closer.
The hands of the monster had turned into giant claws.
That face.. It was so scary.
But he was about to hit the pretty girl.
Who knew what came over him, but something inside him forced him to take a step, then another step, and one after.
He — a kid barely taller than a meter — stood firmly, his legs shaking, his eyes watery.
Still, his two small hands formed little fists, and he stood, ready to face the over-two-meter-tall dark monster with scary eyes.
The monster coming towards him stopped.
The three people trying to stand up beside him were shocked.
The loud argument coming from outside the room also suddenly stopped.
The place became silent as a grave.
“It’s impossible.. All the memories are still with me,” the monster muttered in a surprisingly human voice.
A dark portal started forming behind the monster.
It wasn’t complete yet.
From his left and right, the two boys walked out and stood straight, facing the monster while protecting him.
The pretty woman..
He turned back to look for her, but at exactly that second, she hugged him from behind.
It felt weird.
She was smiling even though there were tears in her eyes.
Who was she?
Who were all these people?
Why was he doing all this?
Suddenly, the wooden bed and stone walls started crumbling down into small particles, as if it was all made of dirt and falling apart.
It felt strange..
His head started to throb — it hurt.
He felt extremely scared that he too would turn to dirt, but the warm hug of the pretty lady kept him from breaking down.
She smelled so nice.
With one last breath, his eyes closed, and everything turned to dark.
**
Damian opened his eyes.
It took only a few seconds for the haze of lights to finally become solid shapes and give him some hints as to where exactly he was.
The last thing he remembered was telling Sam and Lucian what they should do to wake him up.
Did it work?
Or was he trapped somewhere for eternity?
Finally, he could see and feel his body — his real adult, transcendent body.
He was falling, though.
Damian immediately took control of the fall and made a soft landing.
He was alone in the middle of a giant crater.
The dark clouds looming in the sky before they entered the dark river were gone — the day looked bright and nice, except.. it was all breaking down.
The lands, trees, even the sky seemed like they were tearing apart, a tiny piece at a time, and melting into pure, abyssal darkness.
Just like it happened in..
..in a memory trap of his own consciousness.
