Karl chose to go find his family. So did Evante, Kamisen, and even the Highsword knight Every, who decided to visit some relative of his. Highswords were no more. Even if the Land-breaker was back, a lot had changed.
Reize also asked to leave. Her family had been in the hands of chaos followers the last time she had seen them. Just in case, he let her generate six containers full of mana liquid, gave her a waygate cube that would connect only to him, and offered her some runic weapons—which she refused. She already had the hand cannons and other things from the Pigmen War.
“Good luck. I don’t sense anyone above Enlightened near her,” Damian said as she was about to enter the waygate connecting to her little sister.
“Thank you for everything,” she said, her eyes looking down. “And once again, sorry for all the problems I created for you.”
Damian placed a hand on her shoulder and made her look up into his eyes. “You saved my brother. Everything you did is already forgiven. I will need a runesmith expert for the city I will build. The Sanctuary is not only open for humans.”
Damian could feel Vidalia and the Land-breaker’s eyes on him, but he ignored them both. He, for once, knew better than to judge people based on their race. He himself was a half-demon now. Reize entered the waygate, and Damian closed it behind her.
Now, only Lumi and Elias remained.
“And what is your decision?” he asked the two.
“The mana cube..” Lumi said.
“The Dreamlight..” Elias murmured.
“Those are yours.” The two nodded, their anxious faces breaking into smiles. Damian added, “If I were you, I would not reveal those to others without a good reason or in absolute need. At least not until things calm down a little. Grace and others only had small steel mana cubes, and they already influenced the politics of whole countries. You understand, right?”
Both teenagers nodded passionately. Damian patted their heads and opened a waygate for each of them.
Maelor and Sam had people they wanted to meet in the Sanctuary, so they were with him. Vidalia had not moved an inch from near him—she was clearly waiting for him to tell her everything that had happened to her. There was something that Damian realized did not quite fit in her story.
He ignored the Land-breaker and Mindseer seated in the wooden structure he had made. Maelor was beside them, and Sam too—he was looking after Maelor. Hearing that three members of his family were dead was not an easy thing to hear for a teenager, no matter how powerful.
Damian looked at Vidalia and asked the question that had been bothering him. “Who is this relative of yours that is in the Sanctuary with Einar?”
Vidalia looked surprised at the sudden question but answered anyway. “My niece, Evrin.”
Evrin, Damian knew, was barely in her 40s. For the elves, that was equal to teenage years. If Einar built the Sanctuary city 60 years ago, she shouldn’t have even been born at that time. But Vidalia recognized her as her niece, which wouldn’t work if there was no baby Evrin to begin with. So.. there were two Einars and two Evrins in this world?
“Tell me, was this niece of yours with me when I joined the Highsword Academy?” Damian asked Vidalia another question.
“Of course. You went with her to protect her there,” she answered.
“Right. Did she enter the dungeon with us?”
“Yes. You know they came out of the dungeon in the past, right? Is that why all of you were confused earlier?”
“They did? How is that possible?” Damian asked, now truly confused.
“Yes,” Vidalia answered simply. “Everyone in the world knows that. They asked for help from the Highswords. Land-breaker was the one who suggested a solution to this problem. They knew the future of our world, so the Five Kingdoms made them sign a mana contract stating they would do nothing that would change the past. It’s not the first time this has happened, you know?”
“When? Who?” Damian asked.
“A mage some 200 years ago entered a dungeon and never returned—everyone assumed him dead and banned entry into the said dungeon. The dungeon was abandoned. But then someone noticed a weird book written by someone way before the man was even born. The book gave detailed descriptions of how the man had come from the future and what he had done in all his life.
People tried finding this dungeon again for years in vain, but they never found it. It closed on its own without anyone closing it. The scholars were divided on whether it was the truth or not, but when Einar and Evrin came and described things that a stranger should never have known about her mother and me, the phenomenon was confirmed.”
Damian just nodded and looked towards the Land-breaker. Even Second Rankers could hear them at this distance, even if they were whispering. The look on his face said clearly that he remembered no such incident.
Damian stopped thinking about it—it was making his head hurt. It was about time they went to this Sanctuary and met their friends.
“Are you coming?” Damian asked Vidalia.
“No. See it yourself. Do tell me what you decide to do though. And all that happened to you in the dungeon, if you have time. I would love to stop this annoying fight any minute.”
Damian smiled and nodded. Vidalia separated from them and walked back towards her people. Damian looked back at everyone, and they all nodded. So he opened a waygate connecting to Grace. He had no idea what would happen if he used Einar or Evrin as the spell’s target.
They prepared themselves and stepped inside. Before Damian could figure out what his surroundings looked like, a blur of blue and white passed by him and stopped before a person in front of them. They stayed like that for a while and then hugged each other passionately.
Grace and Sam.
It was good to see them reunited and happy.
