The Runic Alchemist

Chapter 689 - 689: The Reunion After Decades

Damian had no idea how the hell time would work like that. Could it be another timeline where things had changed because of Einar and Evrin’s untimely existence? Fortunately, both Einar and Evrin remembered their version of this world clearly before they all had entered the dungeon.

For the couple, it had been over 70 years, but for Damian and the others, they had entered the dungeon for just a year.

“Why did you not come back for us?” Sam asked.

Grace was in his arms. The couple had not left one another for even a minute for the whole day.

“The Sacrium bracelets Damian gave us did not open waygates at all—not to Damian himself and not to that other world we were in. We tried from inside the dungeon’s 25th floor, but it still didn’t work,” Einar answered.

He was trapped in the Demon Lord’s Astral Plane, so it might not have worked. But why didn’t Earth’s waygate work? The tree he had chosen had 200 years of history and was strong enough to survive for a couple hundred more. Damian instantly tried opening waygates to all the IDs he had collated while on Earth—not a single one worked. Could the time difference be huge again? It was the only explanation. There was no being on Earth that might survive for thousands of years, so he knew it was a possibility.

Well, it didn’t matter much. But he still would have loved to see the future of his actions someday, though. For his own benefit, he had done something irreversible. If that thing somehow helped them survive the nuclear war—that would have been the best outcome.

“So he is finally gone..” Evrin murmured.

“Not just him—the whole world of pigmen.. That was one terrifying spell,” Maelor replied.

“They can’t live in a dungeon forever..” Lucian added.

“Yeah,” Grace agreed. “We gave them some supplies occasionally—but even we didn’t have enough, with all these things going around.”

“We will find a way,” Damian said. Then he looked towards Einar and Evrin, “You two did a good job surviving. It wouldn’t have been easy.”

They smiled and looked at each other—the decades-long familiarity must have held many memories worth reminiscing.

“So.. what now?” Maelor asked, then answered it himself, “Everything that comes to my mind has to do with someone’s death..”

“Without the demons, the Empire will reclaim the land stolen by Faerunia, or at least stop them from causing more trouble. It’s another case if Sea Snake interferes..” Evrin analyzed for them.

“Now that Land-breaker’s here, he won’t let Sea Snake do whatever he wants,” Lucian reasoned.

Einar spoke up, “More than anyone, the Faerunians have attacked us—the Sanctuary more. Eldoris is an ally, and the emperor’s full focus is on the demons. We tried contacting Alex but.. we have no idea what’s going on with him and all his family.”

“With you,” Sam said, pointing at Damian, “me, and these two—we can potentially bring the whole world to its knees. I don’t want to conquer, but we can root out two of the troublemakers and build something great that will keep the other two in line.”

His thinking was straight. The demons and Faerunia were trouble—deal with their royalty and remove all their power, and that will be the end. But that won’t be the end—they couldn’t be everywhere at all times. The fear, disorder, and partitions that will be created in the general population of those two kingdoms will ripple for centuries—becoming a much uglier monster after decades. They will sing the praises of the good old days and will hate everything that their city and people or Eldoris do.

It was a solution, and there were ways to deal with such problems—but that will go on for a long time. Damian did not want to waste time managing and ruling people all his life. He was a creator—he wanted peace to build things, and be with Lucian if she accepted such a life.

Damian wanted to get rid of the nationalities and unite everyone under one banner, but this was not the right time for that. Too much conflict had shown its ugly effect on the populace of this continent—first, they needed stability. Changing things should be left for later.

The Sanctuary needed to be better in all aspects compared to all others to influence the whole continent.

“It is true,” Einar said. “Even if we don’t interfere in other matters, no country will be able to ignore the Sanctuary’s potential power with Damian here. A true runesmith transcendent is ten times more troublesome to deal with as a country than any other class.”

“Yes,” Evrin agreed. “With only those hand cannons in our people’s hands, we can dominate the battlefield unlike anything seen before. And that thing Grace said you did—that powered all runic tools constantly, covering the whole stone shrine—even the Empire’s and Malveria’s runic weapons are no match to that.”

“Hell, with just liquid mana containers, we will be unstoppable,” Maelor said.

“Stop right there,” Lucian spoke up before Damian could say anything. “He defeated the Demon Lord fighting with the Land-breaker’s body—his one spell can destroy worlds. You think he can’t face a much smaller army?” No one replied to her, and she didn’t wait for an answer either as she continued:

“Don’t put him in an equal position to the likes of Sea Snake, Land-breaker, the Emperor, or even the Demon King.. If he wanted to rule, I doubt anyone in this world could stop him. But that is not the Damian we know. Or have you forgotten him?”

Einar and Evrin looked down, not meeting his eyes. They knew him better than that—but after years of harassment from all the nuisance around them, it must have been frustrating for them. Anyone would want to retaliate now that they could.

“No, you are right,” Einar sighed. “The dream of Sanctuary was to make life for people in this world easier.. not more chaotic.”
