Chapter 686: The Two Elders

"How long has it been since I last left the forest?"

An elderly elf murmured to himself. He walked with a cane since his back bent. Despite being a long-lived elf, his age was evident, indicating he was very old. His face bore numerous scars, hinting at his past as a formidable warrior.

"I never imagined that I would be led out by you, Elder of the Dragonkin... Traius."

"Don't speak as if you're blaming me, Elder of the Elves, Mason. It's all because you secluded yourself and didn't control the elves that we were forced to step in."

Standing next to the elderly elf Mason was Traius, the elder of the Dragonkin. They hadn't addressed each other by name in a long time, but they were comrades who had fought side by side five hundred years ago, leading their respective tribes and fighting alongside the hero.

However...

"I understand that you despise war after your kin fell to the Dark Elves and after countless battles. But to hide deep in the forest, what is with that?"

"We swore never to fight again. That is the consensus of all the elves who survived the war five hundred years ago. It can't be helped if the younger ones want to seek connections outside and venture out. But those who want to fight can do so alone. We, however, refuse to participate."

"So, you sent your granddaughter to the battlefield? That's quite a laugh."

"We chose not to fight. That's why we decided to live quietly deep in the forest, and we didn't respond to the Dwarves' call for help."

When the Imperial Kingdom and the Dwarven nation went to war, the Dwarves requested aid from many of the demi-human-led nations, however the Elven village did not respond to this call. The elders who were survivors of the last great war, including Mason, made this decision. After witnessing those battles with their own kin and the overwhelming power of demons during the great war, the elder elves grew to detest war and this stance hadn't changed even in the present. Although the village was divided between pro-Kingdom and anti-Kingdom factions, the elder elves rarely resorted to using force.

They chose not to connect the elves with the outside world and did not leave the village. This was their sole stance, which left them vulnerable to enemies but despite this, the elder elves remained unchanged.

Since the impact of the great war was deeply ingrained in them, it was decided that Wendy led the elves to the royal capital.

"We have our own beliefs and those who live now have theirs. They can do as they please and we will not bind the young-ins to our way of thinking."

Mason spoke to the exasperated Traius. While being a long-lived race, Elves dislike change. They enjoy the slow passage of time, unlike humans, who have a different perspective on life altogether.

"If you're hiding away, then you should be no different. Don't just criticize us."

"We've been developing medicine to counter diseases. Don't lump us together."

"And? Have you made any progress?"

"Give us another five hundred years and we might."

"Then it would be too late."

"That's why I dragged you out of your village."

Around Traius were the other elder elves. They were all strong survivors of the great war five hundred years ago, representing the highest combat power among the elves. If they had still been active in the past, many situations might have been different. However, getting the elves who had decided not to act was challenging. Thus, Traius had forcibly teleported them as there was no time to persuade them.

"So? You're not saying we should fight, are you?"

"Of course not. I wouldn't force you to do that much. I just need your help to break this barrier."

"Then why bring us here?"

Traius and the others were in a human city. It was a city that was designated to be a temporary capital by Francine, the current queen regent of the Kingdom, with the Allied Forces also stationed there. Startled by Traius's and the elder elves' sudden appearance, the humans had formed a defensive perimeter. From within this perimeter, a man emerged.

"Please lower your weapons and stand down! I truly apologize for the delay. I am Drollum, the chancellor of the Kingdom. Esteemed elves and...?"

"I am Traius, an elder of the Dragonkin. Since you are the chancellor, this should be quick. We seek permission to destroy the barrier."

"Why do we need the humans’ permission?"

"This is their country."

"Such formalities."

"Have you forgotten? It was the same before. This is how we cooperate with humans."

"Forgotten? It's absurd to remember how we had to deal with humans back then."

Ignoring Mason's exasperation, Traius looked at Drollum. Drollum gazed back at Traius intently before nodding quietly.

"It's an honor to meet the elder of the Dragonkin, a figure that is known only from the ancient texts. As the chancellor, I humbly ask for your assistance in destroying the barrier."

"Thank you for your wise decision. Now let's proceed."

With that, Traius teleported the elder elves.

____________

The battlefield where the Allied Forces and the demons had clashed.

There was nothing left where the royal capital once stood. However with their superior senses, the demi-humans quickly detected the presence of a barrier.

"This barrier is vast... and it's isolating time and space? Must have taken quite an effort to conjure it."

"They're trying to break it from the inside. Thus, we must weaken it from outside to make it easier for them."

At Traius's words, the elder elves dispersed around the area.

"Grand Elder! Everyone is in position!"

"We've already prepared several spells."

The Dragonkin twins, Lubetta and Loretta, approached the group.

Traius wasn't alone.

The entire Dragonkin tribe had come.

"Very well, let's begin."

"Yes! We must save Sieg!"

"But Grand Elder, was it alright to come here with just us?"

"You mean the two we rescued?"

Before coming here, the Dragonkin had rescued two individuals who had been blown away with tremendous force. They were unconscious but not mortally wounded. Thus, Traius had given them healing potions and prioritized breaking the barrier.

"Remember, such extraordinary beings aren't worth worrying about. It was the same before."

Traius chuckled. Seeing these extraordinary beings outside of the village reminded him of the past.

"Prepare the spirit magic... We will attack to weaken the barrier's strength!"

Despite being forcibly brought here, Mason still took proactive steps which suprisedTraius.

"You truly care for your granddaughter... Let's move. We'll now weaken the barrier with the elves and the disturbance will reach inside. With time, it should break."

Traius stretched his shoulders.

"Well then... It's been five hundred years since I last fought seriously."

After his murmur, a series of massive explosions began, caused by the attacks of countless spirits summoned by the elves and the numerous spells prepared by the Dragonkin.
