Chapter 1062: Dong Yang’s Opportunity
From the moment Wu Yuan launched his attack to the instant he gathered the slain Sovereign Qiu Yan and Sovereign Xuan Yu’s treasures, less than a second went by.
It was all one fluid motion, as if he had performed such actions a million times before.
This scene left Astral Monarch Dong Yang and Astral Monarch Ji Shuang, watching from afar, utterly dumbfounded.
This? My disciple… Astral Monarch Dong Yang’s mind reeled. The power of Wu Yuan’s earlier sword strike that felled Sovereign Guan Po had already astonished him. But that, at least, had been within the realm of comprehension.
This time? Sovereign Xuan Yu was one thing, an opponent not much stronger than Guan Po in terms of might. But the other was Sovereign Qiu Yan, the mightiest being in the entire Qiu Yan Macrocosm.
By rights, even if an Overlord from the Long Shan Universe descended upon the Qiu Yan Macrocosm, he should be unable to harm him.
And yet, before Wu Yuan, all this didn’t matter. Whether Sovereign Qiu Yan or Sovereign Xuan Yu, all were utterly incapable of mounting any resistance.
This? Sovereign Qiu Yan is dead just like that? Astral Monarch Ji Shuang’s mind whirled in even greater shock.
In her understanding, the enemy was Sovereign Guan Po. As for Sovereign Qiu Yan? He was the lofty leader of the macrocosm, whom she had even paid respects to in the past. In her eyes, Sovereign Qiu Yan was a nearly invincible existence within the macrocosm. And yet, he was slain with a single sword strike?
Just who is this Overlord who rescued my Dao companion? A torrent of thoughts flooded Ji Shuang’s mind. Could it be… the legendary Overlord Long He?
Her worldview was ultimately limited, lacking a deep understanding of third-stage and fourth-stage Overlords. She had only heard of Overlord Long He and knew he was one of the top-tier Overlords in the universe.
But regardless of which scenario it might be, a sense of awe arose in her heart.
Whoosh! “Master.” Wu Yuan took a single step, returning instantly to his master’s side.
He could naturally sense their shock, but paid it no mind whatsoever.
Sovereign Qiu Yan? He had slaughtered nearly a hundred Sovereigns of similar strength in the Creation Dao Realm. One more made little difference.
Of course, the sword strike that had just annihilated Sovereign Qiu Yan wasn’t particularly powerful, merely at the ninth-stage Sovereign level. However, it was fast, precise, and ruthless. Wu Yuan had no desire to converse with Sovereign Qiu Yan at all.
I’ve completely withdrawn my soul aura and my identity remains concealed. Wu Yuan thought to himself. The less we interact, the lower the chances of exposure. They can’t figure it out? Good, let them remain in the dark.
“Senior, is everything alright?” Astral Monarch Ji Shuang asked.
“It’s fine,” Wu Yuan replied, his voice still hoarse beneath the shroud of black mist. “I was in a rush to leave earlier because I didn’t want to take action. But now that I’ve slain Sovereign Qiu Yan, there’s no need to be in such a hurry.”
“Will the Demon Moon Temple send other powerhouses?” Astral Monarch Dong Yang suddenly inquired.
“It’s unlikely,” Wu Yuan shook his head. “The strongest Overlord of the Demon Moon Temple is only at the third stage, and there’s just one of them. Even if they came, they’d only be able to unleash power equivalent to a ninth-stage Sovereign. If they truly arrived, killing them wouldn’t be difficult.
“Unless,” Wu Yuan continued, “the Demon Moon Temple deploys their late-stage Sovereign legions.”
“What would happen if they did?” Astral Monarch Ji Shuang asked worriedly.
“There’d be more enemies. It would take a bit longer to kill them all,” Wu Yuan replied nonchalantly.
Astral Monarch Ji Shuang and Astral Monarch Dong Yang were taken aback. They had expected Wu Yuan to say he couldn’t match them, but instead it would merely take longer to slaughter them all?
Astral Monarch Ji Shuang in particular was deeply shaken by this. She had already realized that the meaning behind this mysterious Overlord’s words was simple – if the Demon Moon Temple didn’t come after him, so be it. But if they did, he could annihilate them all.
“Master,” Wu Yuan’s voice resonated in the depths of Astral Monarch Dong Yang’s spirit. “I cannot remain in the Long Shan Universe indefinitely. As I mentioned before, please ask Astral Monarch Ji Shuang.”
“Very well,” Astral Monarch Dong Yang responded.
“Shuang’er,” Astral Monarch Dong Yang turned to Astral Monarch Ji Shuang and spoke solemnly, “This Overlord has come at Ming Jian’s request and cannot protect us forever. I am preparing to leave the Long Shan Universe and return to the Ling Jiang Universe. Will you accompany me to the Ling Jiang Universe?”
“Go to the Ling Jiang Universe?” Astral Monarch Ji Shuang only paused for a moment before nodding. “I can’t stay in the Demon Moon Temple any longer either. Of course I’m willing to follow you.
“But what about Overlord Ye Mi’s grotto?” She hesitated slightly.
It was obvious that she cared little for the Demon Moon Temple, but placed great importance on Overlord Ye Mi’s inheritance.
This was understandable. For an Astral Monarch, the chance to receive an Overlord’s inheritance was an opportunity like no other.
“It’s no problem. Go accept the inheritance now. It will take anywhere from a few decades to ten thousand years at most. I will continue to protect you until you emerge from the grotto,” Wu Yuan’s hoarse voice rang out. “Once you’ve received it, I’ll escort you both to the Ling Jiang Universe.”
“Dear?” Ji Shuang’s eyes lit up, but she still suppressed her excitement and looked to Astral Monarch Dong Yang.
“Mm.” Astral Monarch Dong Yang nodded.
“Then I am most grateful to you, Senior.” Astral Monarch Ji Shuang was overjoyed, nearly dropping to her knees in thanks.
Hum~ An invisible force lifted her up, preventing her from kneeling.
“I came here as part of a deal with Overlord Ming Jian, and Ming Jian was only willing to pay such a great price because of Astral Monarch Dong Yang,” Wu Yuan said coolly. “If you wish to thank someone, thank your Dao companion instead.”
Wu Yuan didn’t mind acting as a prop for his master.
At these words, the look in Astral Monarch Ji Shuang’s eyes as she gazed at Astral Monarch Dong Yang seemed to change.
“Astral Monarch Ji Shuang, lead the way. Just give me the spatial coordinates,” Wu Yuan said flatly.
“Alright.” Astral Monarch Ji Shuang nodded repeatedly, not doubting him in the slightest. After all, if Wu Yuan had wanted to seize the Overlord’s token, he could have done so long ago. Why bother with empty words?
Soon after, Astral Monarch Ji Shuang provided the current spatial coordinates of Overlord Ye Mi’s grotto.
“Let’s go!” Wu Yuan waved his hand, wrapping Astral Monarch Ji Shuang and Astral Monarch Dong Yang in his power. In an instant, the two vanished from this dim void.
A few breaths passed.
In a quiet region of outer space 5.2 billion light-years away, there floated an enormous star over a hundred million li in diameter, radiating boundless scorching light. This was a star.
Hum~ As a barely perceptible spatial fluctuation rippled past, Wu Yuan, Astral Monarch Dong Yang, and Astral Monarch Ji Shuang appeared simultaneously in the void.
“We’ve arrived,” Wu Yuan said softly.
Astral Monarch Dong Yang remained relatively calm.
“We’re here already? Tens of billions of light-years in just a few breaths? Even a Sovereign of Space might not be this fast,” Ji Shuang was increasingly bewildered. Everything she had experienced today went beyond her understanding.
“Astral Monarch Ji Shuang, go on,” Wu Yuan said quietly, his gaze falling upon the massive star in the distance. “The entrance to the grotto should be within that star.”
A Sovereign might not be able to sense it. But the projection of the Ancestral Pagoda flickered within Wu Yuan’s internal world, suppressing all interference from essences and allowing him to maintain peak power at all times. Naturally, he could easily detect the anomalies of that star.
After all, Overlord Ye Mi had only been at the third stage before he died. How powerful could the inheritance grotto he left behind truly be? Many of its techniques might seem inconceivable to Sovereigns, but to Wu Yuan, a late-stage Overlord, they weren’t special.
With a single glance, Wu Yuan could observe that a well-hidden spatial passage lay deep within that star, leading to another independent spacetime.
This reminded Wu Yuan of the Bloodforge Spacetime in the Greenridge Macrocosm. There were similarities in their methods.
“Very well.” Astral Monarch Ji Shuang nodded, transforming into a streak of light as she flew into that vast, scorching star. This star was clearly no ordinary one – its flames were sufficient to annihilate High Immortals and High Deities. Of course, this was far from enough to threaten Ji Shuang, a late-stage Astral Monarch. Finally, Astral Monarch Ji Shuang vanished into the endless sea of flame and magma.
A good while went by.
Rumble~ A faint tremor passed through the enormous sun, inducing subtle ripples in spacetime. Though the disturbance was slight, Wu Yuan easily detected it.
“Master, Martial Aunt has safely entered the grotto,” Wu Yuan suddenly spoke.
“That’s good.” Astral Monarch Dong Yang nodded, finally at ease.
“Master, Martial Aunt’s will likely take a very long time to complete the inheritance trial. We need not remain in outer space,” Wu Yuan smiled, waving his hand.
A majestic temple appeared in the void. It was a high-grade Dao Instrument in the form of a hall.
During the battle at the Creation Dao Realm, Wu Yuan had slain thousands of Sovereigns, acquiring countless treasures. Among them were nearly two thousand high-grade Dao Instruments of various types.
Whoosh! Whoosh! The master and disciple flew into the temple. The interior was decorated with exquisite taste, evidence that its original owner had invested no small amount of effort. Alas, it had all gone to Wu Yuan.
“Master, please sit.” Wu Yuan took a seat on the jade platform within the hall, and Astral Monarch Dong Yang followed suit.
“Master,” Wu Yuan smiled, “Martial Aunt has gone to receive an Overlord’s inheritance and may one day have the chance to become a Sovereign.
“After countless years of cultivation, this disciple finally made some achievements. I’ve prepared two gifts, which may be of some assistance to you, Master.”
“Gifts?” Astral Monarch Dong Yang was taken aback.
Whoosh! Wu Yuan waved his hand, and a storage artifact and a divine slip emanating strange light appeared before Astral Monarch Dong Yang. “Master, you’ll understand once you take a look. Please don’t refuse, and there’s no need to be polite.”
“Alright then, I’ll take a look at what gifts you’ve prepared for me.” Astral Monarch Dong Yang couldn’t help but smile, swallowing the words that had risen to his lips.
He was a rather free-spirited person, and didn’t rigidly adhere to conventional norms.
With a thought, his Yuan Soul’s power seeped into the storage artifact. Immediately, his expression changed. “So many top-grade Dao Instruments?”
He assumed that Wu Yuan had prepared just a few high-grade Dao Instruments. But upon inspection, he discovered it was nothing like he had imagined. There were two complete sets of top-grade Dao Instrument flying sword arrays, as well as dozens of various high-grade Dao Instruments. The value was staggering.
Forget an Astral Monarch like himself; even the vast majority of late-stage Sovereign powerhouses would be unable to produce such wealth.
“My disciple, these gifts are far too precious,” Astral Monarch Dong Yang couldn’t help but decline.
He truly thought they were too valuable, to the point that he felt uncomfortable accepting them.
“They’re not precious at all,” Wu Yuan shook his head. “Master, you know of this disciple’s battle records. I currently have an abundance of treasures and can easily spare these. They’re not Xiantian artifacts, merely a small token of this disciple’s appreciation.”
This was truly Wu Yuan’s heartfelt sentiment. Dao Instruments? They were of little use to his current self. And Xiantian artifacts couldn’t be traded for with just a few Dao Instruments.
“When Master eventually breaks through to become a Sovereign, attaining mid-stage Sovereign power, this disciple will prepare an even greater gift,” Wu Yuan said with a smile, his eyes twinkling with anticipation.
The ‘greater gift’ Wu Yuan spoke of was, naturally, a Xiantian artifact.
However, while providing some Dao Instruments to Master Dong Yang was one thing, a Xiantian artifact might prove too much for Master Dong Yang to decipher and control, given his current strength. Should word of such a treasure in his possession leak out, it could bring more harm than good.
But with mid-stage Sovereign power, he could keep the aura of his Xiantian artifact concealed. At least, others won’t be able to detect it on the surface.
“There’s no need to go through so much trouble for your master,” Astral Monarch Dong Yang shook his head, though his face betrayed an undeniable smile of pride.
What brought the greatest joy to parents and teachers? None other than seeing their children grow and disciples succeed.
“This divine slip?” Astral Monarch Dong Yang turned his gaze to another gift nearby.
“It is an inheritance this disciple has prepared for Master,” Wu Yuan explained, his voice warm with respect. “It should be no less valuable than Overlord Ye Mi’s inheritance.”
