Chapter 868: The Fortune Dice
Kyle’s footsteps came to a stop beside a crowded area where a man with two pairs of eyes, the second set atop the first, had set up a table and was rolling a dice.
He tapped the shoulder of a first-stage Celestial, a tall man with pointy ears, and asked what was going on. Finally, he found an individual who actually looked excited to answer him. The man began to explain.
“That square dice is called a ’fortune dice,’ and the four-eyed man seated at the table has mastered the ’natural law of fortune’ that always makes it roll in his favor.”
Kyle raised a brow at his words.
Natural law of fortune? He had never heard of it. According to his over-the-top luck stat, if such a law existed, it should have come to him on its own. But it seems due to his lack of knowledge, he hadn’t learned it.
’I guess I still have a long way to go.’
His interest was piqued as he attentively listened to the Celestial who continued.
“That man sets up his table here every day, claiming that if any Celestial can accurately predict the outcome when he rolls the dice and beats his natural law, he will pay them five natural crystals. But if their guess is wrong, they have to pay him five crystals.”
The man clicked his tongue.
“No one has ever beaten him, and he’s made a fortune with this simple game. The people gathered fight corrupted beasts to earn crystals, but he earns them so easily. Still, everyone keeps coming back every day, hoping to get lucky one day and win, and maybe even figure out his law. That’s why there’s always a huge crowd around him.”
Kyle nodded with a hum. It seemed it was time he learned one more natural law and added a new color to his Celestial lake.
“Anyone can participate, right?”
The Celestial standing beside him was surprised to hear his words. He was only here to watch the game, like many others, so the thought of a new face daring to play the fortune dice game with that notorious con-artist brought a smirk to his lips.
“Of course. However, don’t come crying to me when you lose all your money.”
Kyle chuckled softly at his words. His eyes crinkled ever so slightly in amusement, and the man was momentarily dazed.
“I won’t. In this time of things, I never lose.”
The Celestial snapped out of his daze and scrunched his nose in distaste.
“You appear ordinary, and even your aura is hidden, but your presence is still impacting others. Just how strong are you?”
“A second stage Celestial.”
“That’s it??”
Kyle nodded, and the Celestial could only watch him in bewilderment as he made his way toward the table where the four-eyed man was rolling the dice with a smile.
The Celestial knew he was only at the first stage, but he was a Celestial, so how could this new face possess such a strong ability to put him into a momentary daze?
’What a dangerous person.’
Kyle weaved through the crowd, finally arriving at the table. He felt a hint of relief when he realized that the loser only had to pay the natural crystals after the game.
’At least no one will know I’m poor.’
The four-eyed man at the table beamed with delight as another Celestial lost his natural crystals to him. He raised his gaze when Kyle’s shadow fell over him.
The moment their eyes met, an unsettling premonition welled up within him. It felt as though he was about to lose everything he had, and the feeling left him confused.
The man cleared his throat, chuckling inwardly at his own thoughts.
How could he lose?
He was the luckiest Celestial here!
He even knew the law of fortune!
Eyeing the tall man standing before the table like a prey, he smiled sheepishly. His four eyes filled with mirth and joy.
“You want to play as well? I believe you know the rules of the game.”
Kyle nodded, and the people around him stepped back, surprised to see a new face joining the dice game. Still, they chuckled amongst themselves, convinced he would lose everything he possessed today, just like so many others before him.
The four-eyed man held out his hand.
“My name is Gvette. I always make a point of introducing myself to my opponent, and I like to learn their name as well to remember them. So, introduce yourself.”
“I am Kyle.”
Gvette nodded with a smile.
“There are six different numbers on the dice, and I will roll it. Remember, you need to pick the number before the dice stops rolling. If your answer is right, you win.”
His eyes narrowed.
“No cheating. There are many Celestials here, so if you cheat, you will be caught.”
Kyle looked at the small dice.
“I will choose number one first.”
Gvette chuckled. It wasn’t just him–a wave of laughter rippled through the crowd. They couldn’t believe Kyle had confidently picked a number even before the dice was thrown!
Was this young man simply relying on blind luck with no strategy whatsoever? If so, the outcome seemed pretty clear already. He would lose, and quite badly at that.
The four-eyed man mused.
“Are you sure?”
Kyle gave him the sign to roll the dice, saying that one was his chosen number.
He wanted to know if his luck could beat a Celestial with the natural law of fortune.
If he lost, he would settle the money with some old treasures he still had in his mind space and leave. But if he won… then he would win everything his opponent had.
Gvette rolled the dice with a smirk. Everyone stopped talking and watched the dice. However, his smile faltered when the dice stopped on number one. His eyes widened, and he shot up to his feet.
“No… impossible!”
The crowd gasped in shock.
Someone had finally won a round against Gvette! Eyes widened in disbelief, whispers of astonishment filled the air. How was this possible? Was predicting the dice number as soon as possible the trick to winning?
Unlike the others, Kyle wasn’t focused on his win. He was comprehending the power of the natural law that Gvette had employed on the dice. His mind was absorbing it all, effortlessly understanding it. It was as if the knowledge itself was sprinting towards him, eager to be understood. It was one of the easiest laws he had encountered.
He glanced at Gvette.
“Let’s play a few more rounds. How about we increase the bet to a hundred crystals for the next one?”
The four-eyed man stammered.
“You…! What just happened was simply a coincidence! Yes, a coincidence! How can my law not work! We will play another round! Don’t blame me when you lose!”
