Late at night in a thoroughly lamplit city bustling with human traffic.
Feng Wuji crouched in front of a teahouse, munching on sunflower seeds and eagerly listening to the scholar inside the teahouse recounting a soul-stirring tale.
His long hair was a bit disheveled and casually pinned into a Daoist topknot. He wore long, dark robes, and his features were defined and angular. His eyes were long, narrow, and squinted, like the sharp edge of a blade.
Pedestrians shuttled through the streets, and customers piled into the teahouse.
None of them knew that the “sluggard” crouched in front of the teahouse eating sunflower seeds was actually an unparalleled divine son from the God Domain.
As the old saying went, a lesser hermit went into seclusion in the wilderness, while a master hermit could go into seclusion even in a city.
Of course, Feng Wuji was no hermit. He was just greedy for the glitz and sparkle of mortal dust, for amusement, and for relaxation.
Zhu Tianyou approached from beneath the night sky. When he saw Feng Wuji crouched like a hoodlum, the corners of his lips twitched involuntarily.
“Did you do as I asked?” said Feng Wuji, spitting out a sunflower seed shell.
Zhu Tianyou recounted everything Su Yi had said, word for word.“Haha, see? All I had to do was be even more ruthless and unrestrained than him. He had no choice but to lower his head!” Feng Wuji laughed.
Then, he got up, fished a handful of sunflower seeds out of his pocket, and cracked one open. “Go back and deliver two things to Su Yi for me.”
Zhu Tianyou’s heart clenched, and he was visibly ill at ease. “That guy’s incomparably ruthless, and he’ll kill a man at the drop of a hat. I don’t want to put myself in danger.”
Feng Wuji laughed and patted him on the shoulder. “Relax. He won’t hurt you.”
He then took out two jade boxes, passed them to Zhu Tianyou, and urged him on. “Go on. Be quick about it. This time, you’ll most likely succeed, and when you return, I’ll treat you to a drink!”
……
A day later.
Two jade boxes appeared before Su Yi.
One contained a letter and a map. The letter was from Feng Wuji, and its contents were simple. He told Su Yi that Ning Xiu was still alive, and furthermore, that she was sealed in the second jade box!
When Su Yi opened the jade box, he saw a black jade bottle inside. It was only about the size of a thumb, and it was covered in countless strange, intricate markings of the Divine Dao. A seal covered the mouth of the bottle.
It was indistinct and ethereal, but he could see a woman’s soul body inside the bottle.
There was an additional letter in the second jade box. It read, “Try to open the jade bottle, and Ning Xiu’s soul will die! Once you’ve found Undying Demon Gold in the Forbidden Demon Ruins, I’ll tell you how to open the bottle safely.”
Su Yi called Lin Feng over. Lin Feng recognized the soul sealed in the jade bottle at a glance. That was indeed his Second Senior Apprentice Sister Ning Xiu!
The sight filled him with incomparable rage. The rims of his eyes reddened, and he gnashed his teeth. “That bastard destroyed Second Senior Apprentice Sister’s physical body!”
Su Yi rubbed his forehead and put the jade bottle away before saying, “Don’t worry. So long as her soul remains intact, she has hope of survival.”
He then took out the map from the first jade box. It included the route to the Forbidden Demon Ruins and a picture of Undying Demon Gold.
After examining the map briefly, Su Yi concluded that the ruins were in the Dark Northern Sea!
In his past life, Wang Ye and his friend Yao Sovereign Xing Zhao explored the Dark Northern Sea for years, visiting numerous forbidden zones.
The Forbidden Demon Ruins were inside a place known as the Cave of Divine Tears.
A forbidden zone that not even Wang Ye had dared set foot in lightly!
Su Yi found it all a bit confusing. “Strange. If the Forbidden Demon Ruins are in the Cave of Divine Tears, how could a divine son from the God Domain know about them? And how could he be so certain that there’s Undying Demon Gold inside?”
“Master, I’m coming with you!” volunteered Lin Feng.
“You’d best stay here to watch over the academy,” said Su Yi, shaking his head. “If you really take me for your master, do as I say.”
Lin Feng fell silent, but after a bit of a pause, he slowly nodded.
After Lin Feng left, Su Yi thought for a moment, then took out a talisman and asked Xi Ning for information about Feng Wuji.
He didn’t mention any grudge between them; he didn’t want Xi Ning to worry.
Xi Ning responded quickly. Feng Wuji was the descendent of the Rahu Yao God, one of the Six Great Yao Gods of the God Domain. He was an unrivaled figure among divine children!
He was cruel and frenzied by nature, and he was terrifyingly strong. In the God Domain, he’d stirred up too much bloodshed to count, and he’d caused no small number of disasters. Even some of the gods didn’t know what to do with him for the simple reason that Feng Wuji had a terrifying Master God supporting him!
In the God Domain, they called Feng Wuji the Fiendish Yao Sovereign. His combat strength was top-class within the Great Profound Stage.
At the end of her message, Xi Ning asked if there was a grudge between Su Yi and Feng Wuji with obvious concern. She said that if so, he had to be careful.
Su Yi thought for a moment, then said, “A trivial matter, not even worth mentioning. You needn’t worry.”
That very day, Su Yi left the White Reed Province and made haste for the Dark Northern Sea.
……
The Place Abandoned by Heaven.
Dark skies covered the desolate mountains.
Xi Ning sat on a hillock, reading Su Yi’s response. Her delicate brow furrowed.
“What is it, A’Ning?” asked Luo Tiandu.
“That madman Feng Wuji has come to the Immortal Realm too,” whispered Xi Ning.
Feng Wuji!
Luo Tiandu was briefly stunned, but then, he laughed coldly. “That brazen, incorrigible hooligan? If he didn’t have the Rahu Yao God backing him up, he’d have died countless times over by now!”
But then, he realized that something wasn’t quite right. “A’Ning, if I recall, you and Feng Wuji have never crossed paths. Why bring him up?”
Before she could respond, Luo Tiandu guessed the answer. He sighed. “It seems that Su guy’s provoked yet another disaster.”
He felt a sourness in his heart. What’s so great about Su Yi? Why does A’Ning care about him so much?
“Fellow Daoist Su isn’t the type to cause trouble,” corrected Xi Ning. “You know what an unbridled madman Feng Wuji is. I suspect he’s targeting Fellow Daoist Su!”
“So was Fellow Daoist Su asking you for help earlier?”
“No, he just wanted to know who Feng Wuji was. He said he was dealing with a matter too trivial to be even worth mentioning.”
Luo Tiandu muttered in a daze, “Feng Wuji is too trivial to be worth mentioning? That Su Yi’s bluster sure has grown since his victory at the Immortal Peach Assembly. He even dares to disregard Feng Wuji…”
Xi Ning said coldly, “Mind your tongue!”
Luo Tiandu smiled awkwardly. “Right, right. I admit that Su Yi is strong. I’m sure he can defeat Feng Wuji with ease!”
Xi Ning said coldly, “I’ll have no more of such talk. By himself, there’s no way Feng Wuji can do anything to Fellow Daoist Su. I’m worried that other dangers are hidden in the troubles facing Fellow Daoist Su. No... This won’t do. I missed the Immortal Peach Assembly. I absolutely cannot let Fellow Daoist Su face this on his own.”
She got up and said, “I’m going to take a trip to the Academy of Eternal Night.”
Before her voice had even finished echoing through the air, she shot into the distance.
Quick, crisp, and direct.
Luo Tiandu’s expression shifted erratically. He felt as sour as if someone had overturned a jug of vinegar in his heart. It wasn’t at all pleasant.
Nonetheless, in the end, he took a deep breath and gave chase. “A’Ning, wait up! I’m going with you.”
Xi Ning didn’t even turn to look at him. “Didn’t you say you’d fight to the death next time you saw Su Yi? You’d best just wait here.”
Luo Tiandu said solemnly, as if he were going all out, “A’Ning, out of consideration for you, I can hide nearby and avoid seeing him!”
“....”
……
Three days later.
The far reaches of the Dark Northern Sea, a battered, broken landscape.
Storms of spacetime power swept through the sky, tearing open startling, enormous chasms in the sky.
The largest of these chasms was one hundred thousand feet long, like a gaping maw in the sky!
This was the entrance to the Cave of Divine Tears, the most mysterious, forbidden place in the dark Northern Sea.
Currents of spacetime ran rampant throughout the surrounding area. Even Great Profound Stage experts seldom dared explore this place, as a moment’s incaution could lead to inescapable disaster.
When Su Yi appeared in the distance and saw this turbulent, devastated landscape, he discovered that someone was waiting there already.
A man in dark robes, with long, disheveled hair pinned into an unruly topknot. His features were stark and angular, and he sat cross-legged on a boulder eating sunflower seeds. There was already a pile of discarded shells at his feet.
A diagram hovered above his head, split between black and white, alternating between the pure and impure in an endless, self-perpetuating cycle. Churning chaos mist fell from the diagram, blocking off the space around him, including the area’s turbulent storms of spacetime power.
“Fourth Brother Diagram!” the Book of Karma cried out excitedly. “I wouldn’t have guessed I’d run into you here!”
Fourth Brother Diagram! This was yet another of the Nine Mysteries of Chaos, the Yin-Yang Diagram!
During the Primeval Era, Li Fuyou gave this treasure to his second disciple, Ning Xiu. After Li Fuyou left the Immortal Realm, Ning Xiu took this treasure and ventured into the River of Epochs in search of her master.
Now, this treasure had appeared in the hands of the man in dark robes!
“Are you perhaps Fellow Daoist Su? You’re finally here. I’ve been waiting a long time.” The man in dark robes rose from the boulder and flashed Su Yi a radiant smile, but he was still crunching on sunflower seeds.
“Feng Wuji?” As Su Yi approached, he calmly looked the man up and down.
“That’s me.” Feng Wuji was nothing but smiles as if he’d been reunited with an old friend. “I know I offered Ning Xiu’s life as part of a transaction, but please, don’t take offense. Honestly, you ought to thank me. If not for me, how could you two have been reunited so easily?”
“Is that what you waited here to say to me?” asked Su Yi.
Feng Wuji laughed and shook his head. “I’m just impatient. I want Undying Demon Gold as soon as possible, and I figured that I could witness your magnificence for myself while I was at it. Indeed, you’re far beyond ordinary cultivators!”
He then paused to spit out a mouthful of sunflower seed shells before gesturing at the largest rift in the sky. “See that? That’s the entrance to the Forbidden Demon Ruins. Go inside and bring back Undying Demon Gold. If you do, I promise I’ll…”
But before he could finish his sentence, the humming of a sword filled the air.
