Global Beast Mastery: Only I Can See the Hints
Chapter 610 - 610: The Traitor Hidden in the ShadowsAs Charles passed through one gate after another, the closer he got to the Empress’s chambers, the more anxious he became.
After crossing the final gate, an extremely strange scene unfolded before his eyes.
Aria lay with her eyes tightly shut, a look of intense pain etched on her face. Surrounding her body was a massive cloud of black mist.
The black mist seemed to extend from the curse upon her, as though it had risen from underground and gathered around her. The entire palace was shrouded in a powerful curse.
Even standing at the door, Charles could feel the threat of the curse’s power.
“This is definitely not normal! Someone else must have interfered!” Charles quickly made his judgment.
Aria’s current state couldn’t simply be explained by a curse running out of control. Even without the suppression of the Tears of an Angel, a curse couldn’t possibly spiral to this extent.
There must be a deeply hidden traitor within the Serpent Empire, and this traitor’s power was not to be underestimated. After all, the person who dared to strike against Aria in front of so many would certainly not be someone with weak strength.
Charles’s mind raced as he consolidated all the information he had. His first suspect was Aldany. In his opinion, even if Aldany didn’t directly act, he was surely involved.
As Charles was deep in thought, Zara and High Priest Kent arrived.
Both were equally shocked by the terrifying scene in the palace.
“Your Majesty! What happened here?!” Kent shouted. “Hurry, go to the vault and bring all the items that can suppress the curse!”
Despite being utterly shocked, Kent quickly made a decision. He immediately ordered the Serpent soldiers to find any items that could suppress the curse.
The Serpent soldiers were in complete disarray, crowding at the entrance of the palace.
This scene only made Kent more furious.
“What are you doing? You useless lot!” he barked. “Stop wasting time and follow my orders!”
Under Kent’s repeated urging, the Serpent soldiers finally managed to leave.
Zara was on the verge of collapse. She never expected the Empress’s condition to deteriorate so badly.
After stepping out of her grief and shock, Zara quickly turned her gaze to Charles.
In her eyes, the only person she could rely on now was Charles.
“What should we do now? Do you have a way to suppress the curse on the Empress?”
Facing Zara’s question, Charles’s expression grew solemn as he shook his head.
“Tears of an Angel is the most effective item I have found to suppress the curse. I don’t have any other solutions,” he replied.
Charles was actually very reluctant to say those words. He had always been someone who wanted to have control over the situation.
After a brief silence, Charles spoke slowly.
“Although the Empress is in a very bad condition right now, her state is locked. This means that for the time being, we don’t need to worry about the runaway curse killing her.”
These words brought Zara a sense of relief, but they also raised more concerns for High Priest Kent.
“How did you come to that conclusion?” Kent asked in a soft tone.
He didn’t want to anger Charles any further.
In the current situation, the Serpent Empire couldn’t afford any more turmoil.
Charles turned his cold gaze toward Kent.
He had made his judgment based on hidden clues.
But he would never reveal this, because doing so would expose his greatest advantage.
So, Charles simply responded indifferently.
“I am quite familiar with the power of curses, and I am certain that the curse on the Empress will not intensify in the short term. However, we still need to find a way to lift the curse as quickly as possible.”
His answer was straightforward.
Those who trusted him would believe him, and those who didn’t wouldn’t.
Kent pretended to nod.
“What are your thoughts? How should we go about finding a way to lift the curse from the Empress?” Kent asked, continuing the conversation.
Charles took a few steps toward Kent, closing the distance between them to less than a meter.
Their gazes met, neither of them looking away first.
Charles stared sharply at Kent, speaking each word slowly, “You really don’t know why this is happening?”
Kent, meeting Charles’s eyes, replied firmly, “Of course I don’t! What are you implying? Do you think I triggered the curse on the Empress?”
The atmosphere between them grew tense.
Zara, standing aside, was deeply worried that the two might erupt into conflict.
However, since her emotions hadn’t fully settled, she refrained from intervening. Instead, she watched with concern, silently praying that the situation wouldn’t escalate into a confrontation.
The situation had become dire enough.
After an unknown amount of time had passed, Charles was the first to break the silence and shift his gaze away.
“If it wasn’t you, then that’s good! The person who triggered the curse on the Empress must be a member of the Serpent Empire, and their position must be very high,” Charles said coldly.
High Priest Kent did not offer any rebuttal.
He believed that Charles’s judgment was correct.
However, Kent had shifted his suspicion onto Charles himself.
“Only by finding that person will we be able to obtain clues and find a way to lift the Empress’s curse?” Charles continued, once again looking at Kent.
“I already have a suspect,” Charles said, his voice calm. “That suspect is Aldany. He has been missing for some time now. Doesn’t that suggest that during that period, he was preparing for this action?”
He wasn’t trying to convince Kent; he was simply stating his judgment. In his eyes, Zara was the only person in the Serpent Empire he could trust. This meant that the investigation would have to be carried out by him alone.
Kent remained silent for a long while.
He, too, had some doubts.
Aldany’s actions after the Serpent Empress was affected by the curse had been rather strange. He had once ordered all of the Serpent Empire’s resources to be concentrated in his own tribe. As a result, nearly half of the elite forces that the Serpent Empire could call upon now came from Aldany’s tribe.
“I don’t care what actions you take, I will begin my investigation immediately,” Charles said, and with that, he turned to leave.
Zara hesitated for a moment.
She wanted to stay and look after the Empress. But after thinking for a while, she realized that staying here didn’t make much sense anymore. The Serpent soldiers would surely seal off the Empress’s chambers. As long as there was no rebellion from within the Serpent Empire, there would be no threat to the Empress’s safety.
What she needed to do was help Charles. Only when Charles found the hidden traitor in the shadows would they be able to lift the curse on the Empress quickly.
Having made up her mind, Zara stood up from the floor. She bowed to Kent and said, “High Priest, there’s no point in me staying here any longer. I plan to go and help Charles.”
Kent thought for a moment before nodding in agreement.
“Go help that human. I know you trust him greatly. But I must remind you, he is still a human.”
High Priest Kent still hoped that Zara would remain cautious about Charles.
Zara did not speak, but turned and walked away.
As Zara neared the exit, the voice of High Priest Kent came from behind her.
“During your actions, keep a close watch on him. Record every move he makes. This is for the good of the entire Empire.”
Zara turned and glanced at High Priest Kent.
She had to admit that the Serpents’ hostility toward humans was overwhelming. Even someone like Charles, who had already offered so much help to the Serpent Empire, was still met with disdain from everyone— from the High Priest to the ordinary Serpent civilians.
“High Priest, I will record his every move,” Zara said.
Kent, pleased by her words, nodded. However, Zara then shifted her tone.
“But I’m not doing this to monitor him. I just want to record his actions and let you see them. Afterward, you will feel guilty for the prejudice you’ve shown toward Charles.”
With those words, Zara left, leaving High Priest Kent staring in shock.
Kent sighed deeply as he watched her leave.
“Perhaps I was wrong after all. But everything I’ve done has been for the good of the Serpent Empire. If Charles is truly sincere in his help, I will gladly do everything I can to make amends.”
No one heard Kent muttering to himself. In fact, when Charles first arrived, Kent had been the Serpent with the least hostility toward him. However, the least hostility did not mean there was no hostility at all.
As Kent reflected on this, the Serpent soldiers he had sent out earlier rushed back to him. They had gathered every item they could find in the vault.
After all, they couldn’t determine which item might suppress the curse.
Looking at the useless items before him, Kent sighed and shook his head.
“It seems I really can only rely on that human.”
