Legion asked, “What do you mean lively? Is the god of killing truly dead?”
Gerald shrugged and said, “I don’t know and frankly, I don’t care. Besides, everyone thought he was dead, including the god of justice.”
“Anyway, the corpse of the god of killing was still rampaging and going about trying to kill. But it had been weakened because of the lack of authority, so the god of justice was able to seal it easily.”
“Someone broke into the prison and released the corpse of the god of killing. As you might expect, the god of justice was very angry at this offense. He killed the perpetrator and also cut the corpse of the god of killing into small chunks, which he distributed all over the world so that it would never combine and go on a rampage again.”
He thought that Legion didn’t understand what he meant by his question about whether divine flesh was alive or not and was pretending to understand, so he made it clear.
While Legion understood what he meant by the question, they didn’t know that it was the ability of the corpse of a god to find its authority that made the god of justice break apart the corpse into pieces for captains of the lamp bearers to carry about.
So they were glad for the information. But they did know that the god of killing had gone mad. They found out about this in one of the books they stole from their old jobs.
The information had been revealed to teach lamp bearers a lesson about the dangers of going mad. It was said that even a true god wasn’t safe from this.
The god of killing had gone mad. It was why he went on a killing spree. It was also a major reason why the god of justice could defeat and kill the strongest god.
While the information that Gerald provided enlightened them, it also made them have more questions.
Legion asked one of those questions, “Why didn’t the god of justice keep the authority of the pathway of killing? That way anyone who wants to get it will have to come to him. Who would dare use the corpse of a dead god to find the authority then?”
Gerald shook his head and said, “He didn’t do it because that’s not possible. The authority of pathways is mysterious. For one, it is not a must for them to be in the material plane. They can travel through many planes, so it is difficult to restrict them.”
“Plus, while the corpse of a true god is capable of looking for the authority of the pathway, the authority is also capable of looking for its next inheritor, its previous inheritor, or even anything remotely related to it.”
“You’ve seen how active divine flesh can be in looking for the next host. While divine flesh can be restricted by simply putting them in a box, even a true god is oftentimes incapable of restricting the authority of a pathway.”
“So the god of justice couldn’t restrict the authority of the pathway of killing. That gave the person who released the corpse of the previous god of killing a chance to find it.”
“Unfortunately, the corpse of the god of killing who likes to go on killing sprees was too conspicuous. It couldn’t be controlled at all. It went on a rampage again, which drew the attention of many gods, including the god of justice. Things went south from there.”
Legion nodded in understanding. They felt thankful that they hadn’t killed the man.
They said to him, “That was enlightening. I guess the Mind Hunters are hoping to replicate that man’s feat. But please tell me that what we are doing won’t offend a true god.”
Gerald shook his head and said, “No. What we are doing is very different.”
“We Mind Hunters are creating and gathering more telepaths to create the body of a god, not releasing the corpse of a dead god. Each telepath can produce and maintain at least one portion of this body.”
“Note that this body isn’t real. Or at least, I’m not sure it is real. As you can see, the flesh is phantom. It is only real to telepaths.”
“Even if the body we create is a real body, everything is done silently. Once we have enough for the body of the god of the mind, the authority of the pathway of the telepath will silently appear in the mentalscape that we built.”
“To top things off, what we are doing won’t offend any true god because there has never been a god of the mind. The true god of our pathway wasn’t killed by someone, so we won’t be offending anyone by trying to create its body.”
Legion said, “Good points. But I’m afraid this is not going to be enough to prevent telepaths from being targeted. I’m sure someone somewhere won’t like to see the advent of another true god. Especially the true god of a pathway as insidious as ours.”
Gerald sighed and said, “That’s true. The Lamp bearers don’t want us to have a true god. That means that the god of justice is our enemy.”
Legion couldn’t help but ask, “What is his problem with us?”
Gerald sneered as he replied, “What else could it be but self-righteousness? He hates telepaths because our abilities are difficult to defend. Most godclads are helpless against us once we reach rank 4. He doesn’t like that.”
“He called us unnatural. So he began wiping telepaths out just like the nobles were suppressing the knights.”
“To think that he fought against the nobles because of their oppression and now he is oppressing others. What a world. What a tyrant of a god.”
After ranting for a long while, Gerald coughed and said awkwardly, “To be fair. And this might be an exaggeration. It is true that the telepaths had something to do with the defeat of his brotherhood and the death of all his comrades in arms.”
