GREED: ALL FOR WHAT?

Chapter 2210 - 2210: Lottery.

Legion wasn’t surprised to hear that the great hatred of the god of justice for telepaths actually had such an important reason.

They said to Gerald, “I am not surprised to hear that. Hatred usually has a reason, no matter how preposterous.”

Gerald became agitated again when he heard what they said. He clenched his fists and said in anger, “It is indeed a preposterous reason. The telepaths did participate in the attacks that led to the defeat of his army and brotherhood. But that was when the telepaths were still the lackeys of the nobles.”

“If he had a problem with what we did, he should take it up with the nobles. After all, they forced the telepaths.”

“Even if he hated telepaths, he should have targeted the telepaths that took part in his encirclement, not a whole pathway of innocent people. That’s just going too far.”

Legion laughed and said, “The god of justice is taking it on with the nobles, isn’t he? He suppressed them so hard that the liege system collapsed. A lamp bearer even killed an emperor recently. I think that the nobles are suffering enough as it is.”

Gerald sighed and said, “Right. To be honest, I admire that man. He has done many great things. Which of his feats are not enough to make him a legend?”

“He rebelled against the nobles and won. He became a god. He killed the strongest god. He suppressed the nobles. He suppressed the telepaths and the slavers. I wish I had that much power.”

Legion nodded in agreement. They can agree with Gerald that regardless of what they think of the god of justice, they will always admire him for his power.

So they said, “We might hate the god of justice, but power is always respected.”

Gerald nodded. “That kind of power combined with the knowledge of what is needed to achieve it makes it even more admirable. To be honest, if the opportunity to become a god appears in front of me right now, I don’t dare to take it. I’m sure I would die if I dared to covet that kind of power.”

Legion said, “Speaking of power. When the authority of the pathway of telepaths is attracted, who will get it?”

Gerald shrugged and said, “It will depend on strength and luck. The authority will be up for anyone to grab. The strongest, or the luckiest, or the strongest and luckiest will get it.”

“All I know is that the more portions of phantom divine flesh that a telepath possesses, the higher their chances of attracting the authority to them. I’ve seen those who could maintain 100 portions at once, so I decided to give up and just keep one portion to try my luck.”

Legion said, “So it is like a lottery, eh?”

Gerald’s eyes lit up as he replied, “Yes. It is exactly like that. Since I wasn’t strong enough to maintain a significant portion of the corpse, I decided to give up on it.”

Legion didn’t like what they heard. They like things to be certain and to be reliant on strength. But the chances of getting the authority of the pathway of the telepath are not certain.

No matter what they did, they might end up helping someone else attract the authority and gain control of it. So they didn’t think it was odd that Gerald gave up on working hard.

Then again, they couldn’t complain about the whole thing being a lottery because if the outcome was certain and relied on strength, it wouldn’t be their turn to win because they are not the strongest.

If not for the fact that it was a lottery, they wouldn’t stand a chance of getting the authority of the pathway of the telepath at all. So they couldn’t complain about it.

Legion said to Gerald, “If you’re pissed about your effort going to waste, then imagine how bad the strongest telepaths feel about their immense strength only increasing their chances slightly.”

Gerald chuckled and admitted it. “They must be pissed enough to strike down the sun.”

Legion didn’t understand what he said. So they said, “But there is no sun.”

Gerald explained, “It was a joke. There isn’t a sun, but if there was, they would be angry enough to strike it down and plunge the world into darkness. That’s probably what happened.”

Legion said, “I see.”

Then they changed the subject. “If you have no chance at getting the Authority and becoming a true god, why are you so enthusiastic about helping a telepath join the organization?”

Gerald chuckled again. He said, “So you noticed that, huh?”

“It is to earn mind coins. Mind coins can be used to purchase many things in the mindscape.”

“I am free currently, so I can show you around the mentalscape now. Shall we go in and relax?”

Legion refused. “I have an appointment to honor soon. When I reach the mindscape, I will inform you.”

Gerald was disappointed, but he didn’t make a fuss. He said, “As you wish. I will be expecting your summons.”

Legion bid farewell succinctly, “Goodbye.”

Then they turned and left.

On their way back, Legion-1 said to the others, “I don’t think he lied, but even if he didn’t lie, not everything he says might be the truth.”

Legion-6 asked, “What are we going to do about it? I mean, apart from using it to get the divine flesh that we need?”

Legion-9 replied, “Nothing for now. As long as we can get the rank 4 divine flesh, then we should be satisfied. At least be satisfied for now.”

They can’t tell if he is lying because they can’t read his mind. The best that they can do is contact his mind with their mental probe and communicate with him. This is because he has a shield protecting his mind.

They know that the shield is a manifestation of the rank 4 divine ability of telepaths. This divine ability is called Mental Armament. It is the upgraded version of Mental Probe.
