Rex walked along the street, heading back to the main pavilion with steady steps.
He was carrying Kraken who was cooing at every sight that was remotely interesting for its baby mind.
Once he reached the main pavilion, walking through the same front yard where he had dragged Selvaris mercilessly, he didn’t go inside the main hall. Instead, he sat down on the stairs and gazed ahead at the broken land.
At that moment, he took in deep breath and recalled the reasons he was doing this.
Even though killing was a regular sight for him, this was different.
He consciously killed the innocent without sparing a glance.
Now, the reason he always told himself—that he only killed the innocents when he lost control of his Werewolf side, it wasn’t enough anymore. He couldn’t hide behind that excuse and somehow, that made him feel weird, uncertain, and drained.
Because of that, he really needed to remember what he was fighting for.
Or else, he would slip into the darkness—one that he might never come out ever again.
As he waited patiently for Linthia and Amanir to finish, babysitting Kraken who was doing baby things on his lap, Rex’s eyes blurred for a second and then a figure appeared. He blinked into existence—and was now standing a few paces away from Rex.
Rex’s expression tightened when he saw this person, it was the Invincible Apparition.
“Handling it well?” the Invincible Apparition asked.
Instead of answering, Rex treated him like a ghost—refusing to answer or even look at him knowing that giving him attention would only fuel him to keep appearing in the future. As opposed to answering, Rex turned away, focusing solely on Kraken.
However, the Invincible Apparition didn’t give up there—he pressed on.
“Killing the innocents, I’m sure you’re feeling conflicted—and weird right now,” He continued, walking towards Rex slowly and taking a seat near him. “You don’t want to do this but on the other side, you know that it’s a must or you will be sacrificing the only beacon of light in your life you desperately want to protect”
Ignoring the Invincible Apparition was hard.
Even with a few words, Rex was already clenching his jaw hard—he didn’t need to listen to this.
But he couldn’t force the Invincible Apparition to go away.
He tried, two times to be exact, and now he has a broken and unclean soul because of it.
Not to mention, the way the Invincible Apparition looked ordinary, like a normal person made Rex feel even weirder. Seeing himself when he was no more than a very young kid was already weird enough, but it was the normalcy—that disturbed Rex the most.
Because with no aura or power, only the bloodlust and hatred shone from him.
“Amanir was right, this is not your hope but people in this realm are also actual people, the exact same as those back home,” the Invincible Apparition sighed, casting a pitying gaze—as he shook his head at the distant screams. “And in the next month, you would see more and more of this. Can you do it? Can you endure the mental toll and keep going?”
“Just say what you wanted to say,” Rex finally answered through gritted teeth.
He could tell that there was a hidden purpose that the Invincible Apparition was hinting at.
“Leave it to me,” the Invincible Apparition finally said.
Upon hearing this, Rex turned towards him with both his eyebrows raised questioningly.
“Every time you’re about to do this, about to go on a rampage and flattened cities, go to sleep and give me control of our body,” He continued meaningfully as a smirk crept to his face. “You’ll wake up free from the burden of killing, free from the guilt, free from the pain. Let me carry that burden for you”
Rex sneered, “I’ve outgrown you. Even with my reluctance, I can handle this way better than you could”
“Are you sure about that…?” the Invincible Apparition asked.
His tone and the quickness of his question shut Rex up, making him second-guess himself.
Above all, Rex wasn’t sure if he could endure it all—but knowing he had the others gave him solace.
No matter how hard things became, no matter the gore, blood—and atrocities he needed to do, just the thought of keeping the others safe would help him withstand anything, even the weight of the entire world if he had to.
After all, someone has to carry the burden.
Focusing back on the Invincible Apparition, Rex threw it back at him, “Are you?”
An amused laughter slipped out from the Invincible Apparition’s mouth.
He found Rex questioning his resolve laughable.
“Of course, I’m sure,” the Invincible Apparition answered with confidence and determination but then, his expression twisted into a malicious and dark one. A face that would scare the devil himself, “After all, I’ve killed all of my emotions other than my anger”
Rex was stunned when he heard this.
However, the Invincible Apparition already disappeared once again—leaving him speechless.
He averted his gaze forward and shook his head determinedly.
I’d consider handing control over to him when the Invincible II item couldn’t help me from whatever situation I’m in. Rex daunted a mocking smile, finding even the thought of it impossible. Keep going with your dreams, it won’t happen—there’s no chance I am letting you take control.
Activating the Invincible II item would literally make him invincible.
Rex would be pushed to his full potential as if accessing the power of his future self.
Due to that, the Invincible Apparition would keep on dreaming as he would never have control.
Just then, Rex looked down when his mind suddenly throbbed.
He thought that this was the Invincible Apparition’s doings but it wasn’t.
<Warning!>
<Be advised, please take refuge from the Black Rift lest risking Voidal Metamorphosis again!>
Upon reading the notification, Rex groaned as he almost forgot about that.
He needed to go to Linthia as soon as possible.
But then, as he was about to stand, the dizziness increased and he fell back down again.
<Countdown for Voidal Metamorphosis: 10 seconds>
<9…>
<8…>
Rex saw this and was panicking, he couldn’t escape the Voidal Metamorphosis like back then—as this time would be stronger and he didn’t know if saving the people he was trying to kill would count. He forced himself to stand despite the dizziness and pain.
As he stood, he looked around—attempting to spot Linthia.
He needed to take refuge under her Seeker Flare.
<5…>
<4…>
But he had no time, the countdown was nearing its end.
Just then, however, the countdown suddenly stopped and the pain and dizziness disappeared.
Rex shook his head, snapping from the effects, and looked down.
He saw Kraken was holding his hand, pumping black energy—void energy.
“Dada!” Kraken yelped cheerfully.
“You have a sharp sense and is very useful,” Rex smiled a little and rubbed its head. “I would be in deep trouble if not for you, so thank you, Kraken. I turned you into a Werewolf but it seemed you also retained your voidal power. That’s good”
Seeing that Rex was now fine, Kraken got down from his lap and began running around the front yard.
It seemed saving Rex fueled it with unbearable excitement.
Rex watched Kraken run around with a wry smile.
Even though Kraken was a baby, it was the right choice to turn it into one of his pack members.
But as he was praising Kraken inside, hopeful—about its progress to power, Rex’s eyes flared slightly when he saw Kraken stumbling on his excited steps and fell to the ground face-first. It was so excited that it ended up falling down.
Seeing this, Rex shrugged nonchalantly.
Kraken is a High Spirit, it wouldn’t feel anything from a small fall like that.
However, he was instantly proven to be wrong when Kraken turned towards him.
Black energy seeped from its body, forming inky bubbles that seeped out of its head and floated—before Kraken let out a loud wail. Rex was completely taken aback, staring at Kraken speechlessly as it rubbed its head with its arm as if it were wiping away tears.
“Are those bubbles supposed to be its tears?” Rex mumbled. “And why is it crying?”
Considering how strong it was, a simple misstep wouldn’t hurt it.
But a baby is still a baby.
Rex approached Kraken and carried it up, patting it on its back.
He expected a lot of things before he arrived at the Spirit Realm but babysitting is not one of them.
Just then, the black wind around him cleared.
Rex turned to the entrance and saw that it was Linthia, she already finished off the entire city.
Once she was steps away, she stabbed the bloodied sword she used for the slaughter into the ground and knelt down on one knee, “I’ve made sure every single life in the area—has perished. Not a single citizen survived, that is other than one person”
“Who?” Rex asked with a raised brow.
Linthia shook her head, “I don’t know but he’s an Immortal Spirit, I can’t kill him”
Upon hearing this, Rex nodded—it must be Eiran.
He was the sole survivor.
Rex wanted to check on Eiran for the last time before he departed before the imperial forces arrived and caught him in the act. But then, Linthia bowed herself deeper, “I also want to thank Your Majesty for teaching me an important lesson, that power demands sacrifice. You’ve opened my eyes—and I will forever be in gratitude”
For a moment, Rex paused.
But then, a helpless smile crept to his lips, “It’s the bitter truth anyone with power understands”
“Welcome to the reality of strength, Linthia,” He added with a firm nod.
Now that she understood how the world of power works, he had less doubt she would be weak again.
Linthia has grown a lot in such a small amount of time, mindset-wise at least.
“However, I must remind you to do it modestly. Only when you really need to—and always remember that the Clarentium Empire is your home,” Rex continued, bestowing Linthia his personal views. “One other lesson… know your strength. Never cross anyone stronger than you when you’re not ready to face the world. If your thirst for power risked the empire, I will kill you”
“Yes, Your Majesty,” Linthia bowed deeper. “If that ever became a reality, I’ll kill myself”
Rex nodded and glanced upward, seeing Amanir had also come back.
“Nobody survived except for one,” He reported while he landed.
Nodding his head, Rex walked out of the front yard.
Soon, he saw a broken figure kneeling at the center of the battlefield—staring into the endless void.
Eiran’s mind broke as he watched—not only did Rex kill Garvain and Istvan right in front of his eyes but he also watched Rex impale their heads on a spear as a warning trophy and line up the corpses of the soldiers in such a horrific fashion.
He didn’t only lose his lords but also his home.
Seeing this, Rex handed Kraken to Amanir for a moment before he approached Eiran steadily.
Upon reaching the man in tattered armor, Rex knelt down to meet his gaze.
Before he left, he needed to check something.
“Do you want revenge?”
“…”
No answer, Eiran’s lips were sealed shut.
“Do you want to follow me? I’ll treat you well”
“…”
No answer again.
On top of not answering, Eiran didn’t even blink, barely breathe, and his eyes were still hollow.
It was clear that he was broken thoroughly.
Then again, losing his home where he was raised and lived for hundreds of years has this kind of effect.
Sighing lightly, Rex then asked his last question, “Do you want to die?”
Once he was met with no answer again, he stood up and turned around to leave.
No point in talking to someone whose heart and mind were already dead.
Rex turned to face both Dragna Land and Dragna Sea which were now nothing but ghost cities, channeling his life energy to the Red Dawn of Kaiser—causing it to glow brilliantly. Giving a signal to both Amanir and Linthia, both of them flew upward.
And in the next second, Rex swiped his claws—spinning his body.
Swoosh!
A ring-like life energy slash expanded throughout the area, shattering the buildings into rubbles.
He watched as each building shattered before his focus landed on the towering building nearby.
Now that both Dragna Land and Dragna Sea were destroyed, it was time to check the Obelisk of Life.
