Luckily, Rex and the others managed to escape their pursuers.
It was fortunate that they had Kraken on their side.
Once they reached a safe distance, they took refuge in a cave they came across.
Along the way, Rex and Linthia slaughtered some Voidal Pawns that stumbled upon them as well as some more inside the cave before finally taking a rest. Now, Rex reached level 42, a considerable mark considering the brief time he spent in this body.
Rex sat down in a spacious chamber that was hidden at the end of the cave.
One could see bags under his eyes and there were still unhealed wounds across his entire body.
All of them are severe wounds with the worst located at his chest.
It was Istvan’s boosted Spirit Genesis that stubbornly persisted.
Feeling that he and Linthia were becoming weaker, Kraken made a surprising initiative to close down the cave’s mouth with a barrier. It was a barrier created by void energy, one that was able to easily block the Black Rift’s rush.
A kind gesture that Rex didn’t buy at all.
“Amanir, tell that one-day-old baby that spitting is bad,” Rex instructed with heavy eyes.
Hearing this, Amanir could only chuckle as that earlier was really unexpected.
As soon as Rex said that, he collapsed on the ground and gazed into the dark, tall ceiling of the cave.
“It’s been some time since I’ve been this sleepy,” He mumbled lightly.
From the side, Linthia watched Rex as she cleaned the blood from her hands with life energy.
She seemed to have something to say, looking at Rex with deliberation—while also feeling extremely sleepy for some reason. Sleeping is not mandatory for Supernaturals like them, or at least, it shouldn’t be mandatory.
However, for some reason, today was an exception.
Maybe the weight of exhaustion from the battle earlier was finally showing signs of a toll on their bodies.
Biting her lower lip, Linthia approached awkwardly, “Rex…”
“What? If it can wait, wait. I really need to sleep right now,” Rex answered without opening his eyes.
“I…” Linthia stuttered, scrambling to find the words while enduring her sleepiness. “It’s just that…”
“What is it?” Rex lifted up his head and looked at her questioningly.
Realizing that she was annoying Rex, she quickly blurted out what she wanted to say.
She disregarded the way she said it.
“You can sleep on me if you want”
“…”
Rex was perplexed, he didn’t know where this came from.
“What?” He asked, demanding her to explain.
Flustered, Linthia quickly elaborated, “Empress Evelyn once mentioned that you never sleep so since you’re going to sleep now, I thought I’d make it more comfortable. If you want, you can sleep on my thighs. Sleeping on the ground like this is not proper for someone like you, that’s what I’m trying to say…”
Upon hearing this, Rex chuckled humorously.
Linthia was surprised to see him chuckle, he never chuckled because of her.
Mainly, Rex always looked at her with disappointment so seeing him chuckle because of her was new.
It felt nice and unconsciously, her face flushed.
“You heard that from Evelyn and yet you offered me your thighs,” Rex asked with a raised brow, which was a bold offer—on Linthia’s part. “You’re becoming too bold, Linthia. If she heard that, you’d probably hang”
“H- Hang…?” Linthia’s expression paled.
She said without thinking, wanting to be as helpful as she could be for Rex—she didn’t think this through.
“I’m kidding,” Rex leaned back. “I have a military background, sleeping like this is more than fine”
Hearing this, Linthia nodded her head meekly.
“But… I suppose I’m not in the military right now,” Rex added.
Linthia paused for a second, stunned—watching Rex stand up and move closer to the wall.
He then sat there, looking at Linthia with saggy eyes.
“What are you waiting for?” Rex asked before patting the space beside him. “I can tell you’re also like me, barely awake. Come here and sit beside me. You’d hurt your back if you slept sitting up. It’s way better if you lean against the wall”
Blinking her eyes, she snapped from her initial shock and immediately rushed over.
Once she sat down, Rex wasted no time to lay down on her thighs.
Just under a solid minute, he was already knocked out cold.
Linthia, on the other hand, watched as his breaths became steady—still shocked at the situation.
But soon she too fell asleep.
Some time passed.
Upon waking up from her slumber, she realized that Rex wasn’t lying there anymore.
Instead, it was Kraken who seemed to be sleeping soundly.
On the other hand, Rex was with Amanir right now—seemingly planning their next moves.
Since she was stuck babysitting Kraken, she decided to sleep again.
Currently, Rex was looking at the map that Amanir brought along with their belongings that were left in the hotel they stayed in while they were in Arbitgea. He was now checking his location while Amanir helped him identify the places marked on the map.
At this moment, they were currently residing in the Solmara Continent.
Three prominent superpowers reign over the Solmara Continent.
One of them is the Haeltara Empire.
Currently, Rex and the others were within this empire’s territory.
The Haeltara Empire was located at the southern edge of the continent.
Amanir was born within this empire so the only gateway he could create inside—the Spirit Realm was within the empire. Other than the royal house, there’s also a group called the Orion Eight that featured 2 Duke and 6 Marquess Households that have retained their positions for thousands of years—and have absolute power within the empire.
Based on Amanir, the two dukes were at True Divine Spirit rank.
For the 6 Marquesses, they are at the Divine Spirit rank.
All of them hold a Godly Echo that made their houses unchallenged for as long as one can remember.
Rex was still devastatingly weaker than them so there’s no way he could use force against them.
Since the empire, like all other places, was centered around the main Obelisk of Life—that which was located at the very edge of the continent, the capital city was located at the north side of the empire. Due to that, the empire was consistently having issues guarding its borders.
It was a matter of distance that needed to be covered for the main army to reach the border.
Because of that, the empire stationed stronghold bubbles that were nearer to the border.
All of these strongholds are governed by the Orion Eight.
“Arbitgea is at the central part of the empire, we’re far from the capital city and also the border. From what I understand, you’re going to marry Princess Davina, am I right? Or do you still dare to think that finding another way is better?” Amanir looked at Rex dead in his eyes.
Upon hearing this, Rex straightened his back and glanced over his shoulder—checking Linthia.
He then sighed, there doesn’t seem to be another way.
If he had more time then sure, he could work his way up but he doesn’t.
Marriage is the only way for him to become a noble quickly.
“Yes, I’m going to participate in the Nameless Dragon Arena,” Rex answered.
Amanir squinted, “To marry her, right?”
“Do I really have to answer that question?”
“Yes, you have or else I’m not going to stick around for a suicide mission”
“Where can you go? You’re assimilated to me”
“That’s beside the point”
“…”
Rex massaged his forehead in frustration, “Yes, I’m going there to win and marry Princess Davina”
“Good,” Amanir nodded, pleased with the answer before he turned to the map again. “In that case, our only option was to go to one of the strongholds. The Aurelian Fortress is the nearest to us. Even though it’s a stronghold, it’s still a city so you need to appeal to the governor”
“But why should we go there? Why don’t we pressure weaker cities?” Rex asked in confusion.
Considering his strength, he could find another house like the Arcalen House.
He could easily pressure them to nominate him to the Nameless Dragon Arena then.
“No, you can’t,” Amanir shook his head firmly. “You need to have a strong backer to be accepted”
“Huh? The tournament is literally open for the nameless” Rex argued.
Amanir slapped his face with his massive ear in exasperation, it was clear that even though Rex was an Emperor, he wasn’t that great in politics, “Talking to Evelyn might be better than you but anyway, you can’t because the tournament is a front. Of course, anyone can enter—and even be chosen but that is if the decision was solely in Princess Davina’s hands”
Upon hearing this, Rex’s eyes widened slightly as he understood what Amanir meant.
Since Princess Davina is the Duke’s daughter, the Duke would intervene.
If the winner was actually a nobody, the Duke would refuse him even if Princess Davina accepted.
From the Duke’s point of view, he must at least maintain his image.
Accepting a nobody doesn’t bode well within the circle of nobles.
Because of that, Rex could only be nominated from one of the Orion Eight to really succeed.
“Earlier, that head of the Narsa House told me that I need to be an Eternal Spirit before competing in the tournament,” Rex said, recalling his conversation with Istvan. “What do you think about that? Is it really necessary?”
“It made sense,” Amanir nodded. “Princess Davina is a symbol for other princesses because of her own, natural strength. She’s basically the star of the young generation and also the prima donna of the whole empire beside the royal princess. She has many suitors. Even the crown prince once tries to suit her”
Rex listened attentively to Amanir and contemplated the information.
If her suitors are endless and there’s even the crown prince in the mix, why hasn’t she picked anyone?
Considering her position and power, any man basically would say yes if she asked.
So Rex was confused as to what made her feel the need to create a tournament.
If she wanted a strong husband then she has a lot of them, waiting for her to say yes so why?
A powerful princess who held a tournament to find a husband, what could possibly be inside her mind?
…
Meanwhile, Noctem Vale.
Upon checking the disturbance that came from the Arcalen House, Davina immediately returned back.
She was inside a carriage pulled by beautiful spirit beasts along with Mira.
“Go notify your Father that I am going to need a few hundred of his warriors—ready at my command,” Davina instructed sternly, her face stern and icy. “Anyone above the Immortal Spirit rank should be more than enough”
“Lady…” Mira leaned forward worriedly. “Shouldn’t you leave this to us—to handle? We already took too much of your time already when you should’ve gone home by now. I’m afraid Duke Lorcan would be displeased if you stay any longer”
“I’ll talk to him, you don’t need to worry,” Davina waved her hand. “I’m here so might as well”
Despite her assurance, Mira was still troubled.
Just then, however, her eyes widened for a second when she received a telepathic message.
Unconsciously, her eyes turned to Davina sitting in front of her.
“Ah, Lady Davina…” Mira snapped out of her daze—and smiled an uneasy smile. “Since you’re going to be departing soon anyway, why don’t we go to the barracks, to hasten the process? I’ll accompany you there”
Mira turned to notify the driver but Davina stopped her.
“Just tell me what it is, I can tell you’re hiding something,” She asked—her eyes glowing emerald.
Naturally, Mira stiffened—she overestimated herself.
She has no chance of hiding something from Davina’s acute senses.
Smiling apologetically, Mira then confessed, “It’s yo-“
Before she could finish her sentence, the carriage halted—they had arrived at the House of Ravens.
Suspecting that Mira must received a message from someone, Davina didn’t wait for her to finish and walked out of the carriage. If not from her then her Father would be able to tell her what was happening, what are they hiding from her.
However, as soon as she stepped out—her entire body stiffened and her expression soured.
“Davina… I was waiting for you”
